Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon line has been widely regarded as the company's flagship business-class laptop over the past few years. The previous model, which we pored over in deep-dive detail here, brought a new, more compact chassis design with it, along with thinner display bezels and a refresh of Intel's Kaby Lake mobile processor platform. There was a notable caveat or two with the previous-gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and it could have been a showstopper, depending on your perspective and use case. Last year's model was only available with a  non-touch, standard IPS display, which could be a shortcoming for some folks looking for accessibility and ultimate image fidelity. Fortunately, however,... Read more...

In a letter to customers, Lenovo admitted it has a few loose screws. Or more accurately, the company's ThinkPad X1 Carbon (5th generation) does. Due to this, Lenovo is voluntarily recalling some of these thin and light laptops, as the loose screws could damage the device's battery causing it to overheat, and potentially catch fire. "Lenovo’s investigation and analysis determined that an unfastened, small screw, left in the unit during manufacture, could damage the surface of the lithium ion polymer battery and cause a short, leading to rapid cell discharge of the battery," Lenovo said. "This defect has led to three failures in the field." The recall affects 5th generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon... Read more...

If you have an older ThinkPad, ThinkCentre or ThinkStation PC with an integrated fingerprint reader, you might want to download Lenovo's latest software update. The company has acknowledged that a flaw in its Fingerprint Management Pro software could allow a malicious actor with physical access to your device login with a hard-coded password, bypassing the fingerprint reader. Lenovo says that the flaw affects Lenovo machines running Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. "Sensitive data stored by Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro, including users’ Windows logon credentials and fingerprint data, is encrypted using a weak algorithm, contains a hard-coded password, and is accessible to all users... Intel is in hot water after a report from The Wall Street Journal surfaced yesterday that claims that Intel announced to a handful of customers, including several Chinese companies, that its chips were susceptible to Meltdown and Spectre security flaws. Those two flaws affected chip technologies from Intel, AMD, and ARM. Security experts have taken issue with what Intel did because the early warning to the Chinese firms could have allowed the companies to alert Beijing officials on the flaws, giving China operatives extra lead time to exploit the vulnerabilities in the chips. Jake Williams, head of Rendition Infosec and a former NSA employee said that it was a "near certainty"... Read more...

When Lenovo launched the Yoga 910, it was beautifully styled, powerful enough for most mobile users, and it offered reasonably good battery life. However, the public reception of the 2-in-1 convertible was a bit mixed and perhaps not quite what the company had hoped for. Some critics took issue with the Yoga 910's thermal characteristics, fan noise, and its awkwardly-placed upward-facing web cam. However, Lenovo took this feedback into consideration and developed the new Yoga 920 we'll be showing you here. From the outside, the Yoga 910 and 920 look similar at first glance, but there are a multitude of significant updates that improve the machine in a number of ways. Nestled inside an all-aluminum...
