These are strange times we live in. Tom Brady is leaving the New England Patriots, most sporting events have either been cancelled or postponed, we're being told to social distance ourselves, and toilet paper is quickly becoming the new currency. Video games provide a respite from reality, though if you preordered a physical copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons from Amazon, check your email—it might be delayed. New Horizons releases on Friday, March 20, and is one of the most eagerly anticipated games so far in 2020. The other one is Doom Eternal, and as we reported on earlier, GameStop is releasing that game a day early (today) in hopes of spreading out the crowd, since it is due to release... Read more...
Given that much of the world is on lockdown (in one way or another) due to the coronavirus, the sheer number of people working (and learning) from home is putting a strain on ISPs and online services. One such service that is apparently straining under the pressure is Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo Switch Online is used by many Switch games -- including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe -- for multiplayer functionality. Those same servers also underpin the Nintendo eShop, which allows you to purchase games digitally. As of this writing at 9:46am EST, Nintendo online services are still down, as witnessed by the screenshot and error message presented below when trying to access the Nintendo eShop. (Click... Today's date is Mar 10, otherwise known as Mario Day (Mar10...get it?), and in celebration of this once-a-year event, there are some delightful discounts to be had on several Nintendo Switch games. Most of them feature the world's most famous plumber, though some of the game discounts also focus on his companions, such as Yoshi and Captain Toad. Price cuts from Nintendo are far more sporadic than from other publishers, so it is always nice when something like this happens. Some of them can be bought and downloaded from Nintendo's Switch eShop, others are available at places like Amazon and Best Buy. Sitting high on the list is Super Mario Maker 2. The popular sequel to the first Super Mario Maker... Read more...
Perhaps one of the bigger surprises with Doom Eternal is that it will be launching on the Nintendo Switch, along with the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Less surprising is that it won't come out on the Switch at the same time as other platforms—id Software and its port partner Panic Button need a bit more time to optimize and spit shine the game for Nintendo's hybrid console. Will it be worth the wait? Prepare to be "stunned." It's still not clear when exactly Doom Eternal will arrive on the Switch, but it's definitely coming, and apparently progress on the port is promising. Or at least that is the impression of id Software director Marty Stratton. "We really haven't talked about dates... Read more...
Remember how difficult it was to get your hands on a Switch console when Nintendo initially released the system three years ago? The rabid demand prompted Nintendo to issue a statement saying the shortage was "definitely not intentional." That's all in the rear view mirror now, though the Coronavirus outbreak could result in another shortage of the popular console. If so, the timing would be particularly unfortunate, considering how well it is still selling—cumulative sales of the Switch recently surpassed that of the legendary Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), with 52.48 million units sold to date, including 10.81 million Switch unit sales during the last quarter. The Switch... Read more...
Traveling by air can be a rather boring experience for many people. Not only do you sit in a cramped airplane seat surrounded by people and screaming kids while in the air, often travelers deal with long layovers that require you to sit in equally confined areas within a terminal. For many people reading or playing mobile video games are the best ways to pass the time. Nintendo has a new Experience that it wants to share with travelers at some airports around the country this month called the Nintendo Switch On The Go pop-up airport lounge. Nintendo says that the airport lounge will launch in various locations starting on February 13 around the United States. Each of the lounges will include... Read more...
Historically, Sony has been loathe to fully embrace cross-platform multiplayer gaming, much the consternation of gamers. Who knows when or if it will pull a true 180 (to Sony's credit, it does support cross-play in some instances). When it comes to its PS4 Remote Play feature, however, a new survey hints that Sony might be more welcoming of competing consoles. PS4 Remote Play is a different beast than cross-play, of course, but it was to be supported by competing consoles, it would be an interesting twist (and a welcome one). As it stands, PS4 Remote Play allows gamers to stream PlayStation 4 games to their Windows PC, Mac system, Apple iOS (12.1 or higher) devices, and Google Android (5.0 or... Read more...
Nintendo may have take a swing and a miss with the Wii U, which failed to recapture the magic of the Wii and ranks as the company's worst selling console of all time, but the same is not true of the Switch. It continues to sell like gangbusters—Nintendo sold an additional 10.81 million Switch systems during the last quarter, and 52.48 million since launching nearly three years ago. The Switch will need to double that figure in order to surpass the original Wii at 101.63 million lifetime sales, but the hybrid console is well on its way. Just as impressive, the Switch managed to scoot past the venerable Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in lifetime sales—Nintendo pegs SNES... Read more...
When it comes to adaptive controllers for gamers with special needs, Microsoft leads the pack. While Microsoft markets its Xbox Adaptive Controller, other major game console makers don't have first-party controllers for special needs gamers. However, Rory Steele designed a custom game controller for his daughter, who wanted to play Zelda Breath of the Wild with her friends. To get his daughter playing the game, he managed to get an Xbox Adaptive Controller to work with the Switch. We don't have any videos or images of the actual build process, but Steele does talk a bit about what it took in the multiple tweets he posted. He started with a kit that he ordered online which included arcade joysticks... Read more...
Many people who enjoyed gaming during the 2000s have fond memories of the Nintendo GameCube and its best-selling game Super Smash Bros. Melee. The release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch caused several creators to find a way to smash together the Nintendo Switch and GameCube. Creators Mike Choi and Shank both recently released photos and videos of their own GameCube/Nintendo Switch dock and controller Frankensteins. YouTube Shank Mods was the first to release photos and videos of his “GameCube Joycons”. Shank essentially reconfigured a Nintendo Wavebird wireless controller to pair up with a Nintendo Switch. Some of his biggest challenges included figuring out... Read more...
Are you looking for a gift idea (for someone else or perhaps to treat yourself)? If so, there are plenty of bargains out there. One that catches our eye today is the Nintendo Switch. Over on Amazon, you can snag one for $269.99, which is $30 below its list price. This is the latest version of the console, too. [EDIT: the Gray version is sold out and not available at the moment -- go here to get the Neon Blue/Red model for $269.00 after coupon, though note it will be in stock on January 19, 2020). If you are lucky, you might even be able to grab one for $239.99, though don't bank on that. Here's the thing—when you are signed into your Amazon account, there is a clickable coupon box that... Nintendo is fairly good at keeping secrets, so much as that is possible in the internet era, so it is not surprising that we have heard very little about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 since it was announced at E3 this past June. There just have not been many substantial leaks. In the absence of such things, however, Nintendo has shared some new new images of the upcoming game. What Nintendo in Japan has shared really amounts to a behind-the-scenes look at some of what goes into developing these worlds and landscapes. Or as the Google-translated text refers to them, they are "stage production" images. "Stage production is the creation of background graphics such as the terrain, sea,... Read more...
This past Cyber Monday was Amazon's single biggest sales day ever, and it must have done well on Black Friday as well—perhaps a little too well, to the point of not being able to keep orders straight. Somehow or another, Amazon managed to replace a bunch of Nintendo Switch orders with seemingly random items, such as books, batteries, and even a pack of condoms. That's right, at least one person who ordered a Nintendo Switch from Amazon on Black Friday received a package of prophylactics instead. Granted, in the right hands a condom can be more fun than a Switch, but there is a definite price gap between the two. How exactly could this happen? Amazon is stumped at the moment, though it did... Nintendo is finally hopping into the largest gaming market in the world with its latest consoles. The gaming company has announced that it will be launching the Nintendo Switch in China on December 10. The launch will come in cooperation with Tencent, and the console will be called the Tencent Nintendo Switch. Nintendo plans to sell the console for RMB 2,099, which is about $300 Stateside. The price will get gamers in China a trial/demo version of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and a one year warranty, and games for the console will reportedly cost about RMB 299 or $42. Another nice aspect of the launch for gamers there is that Nintendo and Tencent are working with Chinese indie devs to launch... Read more...

However, both retailers are offering a $25 promotional offer if you purchase a Switch Lite. In the case of Amazon, you'll purchase the Switch Lite at its regular price of $199.99, but you can enter the code UUDDLRLRBA at checkout to qualify for a free $25 promotional credit. Unfortunately, you can't apply it directly to the cost of the Switch Lite at checkout, and it will instead be emailed to you within 7 days of your purchase shipping.... Read more...

Google's ambitious cloud gaming platform called Stadia is only a few days away from launching to the public, and there are still many questions that have yet to be answered. That said, Google did answer some of them during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit yesterday. One of them was in regards to which controllers will work with Stadia. Following the AMA session, Google updated its support pages to list exactly which controllers will (and will not) work with Stadia. Sony's DualShock 4 is one of them, as is Microsoft's Xbox One controller, both of which support USB and Bluetooth connectivity with Stadia on the desktop and through Pixel devices. Here's a look at the official list... Source:... Read more...
Nintendo wants to sell a bunch of the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite game consoles. However, it won't resort to cutting the price of the hardware to spark momentum. And the fact that Nintendo wants to continue selling the consoles for years to come is good news for fans. At a recent Q&A session, president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the pricing strategy and how the profitability of the hardware might increase. He was specific that Nintendo wants to sell the consoles at its current price for as long as possible. There are no plans to reduce the cost at this time, according to the exec. He also noted that profitability could fluctuate depending on the quantities produced in the future.... Read more...
Nintendo Switch gamers or those with Switch gamers on their Christmas shopping list will want to check out these latest console and accessory deals. If you have any Pokemon fans on your shopping list, there's a new special edition Nintendo Switch Pikachu & Eevee Edition bundle; and Amazon is offering a trade-in deal. At Amazon, the special Pikachu & Eevee bundle sells for $426. Amazon is offering to take your normal Nintendo Switch with the Neon Joy-Con controllers and give you a $176.37 Amazon gift card for the trade. There are caveats to the trade; namely the console has to power on and work perfectly, power cables and accessories have to be included, and the console can have no cracks... Read more...
Nintendo just reported its earnings for Q3 2019, and the company had some good news on the hardware sales front. If you recall, Nintendo introduced the cheaper and lighter Switch Lite during the quarter, which has resulted in a massive uptick in sales. According to the Japanese gaming giant it sold 4.8 million Switch consoles during the quarter, which represented a whopping 50 percent increase year-over-year. We can attribute that sales momentum due to the introduction of the Switch Lite, which is priced at $199 compared to $299 for the standard Switch. Nintendo sold 1.85 million Switch Lite consoles and 2.85 million Switch consoles during the quarter. As of September 30th, Nintendo... Read more...

But as for the discounts that each ones bring, they are already starting to roll as retailers look to get a jump on the annual sales bonanza. So it goes for Walmart, where you can pick up a Nintendo Switch bundle at a tantalizing discount right now. Over at Walmart, there is a "Build Your Bundle" offer happening. You begin by selecting a Nintendo Switch console, either the version with neon blue and red Joy-Con controllers or the one with gray controllers. Call it one small step for PlayStation 4 owners and one giant leap for gamers, as Sony has opened the door for cross platform gameplay. Or shall we say, opened it a bit wider—Sony actually relented to Epic Games around this same time a year ago by allowing an open beta enabling cross-play in Fortnite between the PS4 and Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. At first, Sony was resistant to the idea, citing the PS4's supposed superiority over other platforms as the reason why. Sony also admitted at the time that it was not a technical barrier preventing it from embracing open play, just that the "PlayStation [4] is the best place to play." Sony would later backpedal by saying "enabling... Read more...
