Hewlett-Packard has unveiled a new device for virtual meetings and conferences that is called the Elite Slice for Meeting Rooms G2 with Skype Room Systems (that's a mouthful) along with a new 43-inch diagonal 4K conferencing display. The Slice integrates all the voice, video, and data capability needed for real-time collaboration into one device. The SRS version of the device also enables high-quality audio and video via Skype for Business. It looks like HP is anticipating strong demand for Windows 10 laptops and convertibles powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. One of HP's first devices built around the mobile chip is the Envy x2 (model 12-e011nr), a premium 2-in-1 that is now available to order, for $999.99. It's a good thing HP did not charge a penny more, because then we'd have to pan the thousand-dollar price tag—phew! Jesting aside, the asking price is high for a Windows 10 convertible with an ARM processor inside rather than a x86 chip. The selling points are built-in 4G LTE connectivity and long battery life. With the former, users are more easily able to hop online, rather than having to hunt down a Wi-Fi... Read more...

CES 2018 has come to a close, and so begins the arduous wait, for some of the exciting devices we saw, to come to market. The Consumer Electronic Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada is where companies come to tout new wares and announce upcoming products and technologies. While some of the cool tech that was shown leaves us with that "shut-up and take my money" feeling, it’s often not retail-ready, with months of lead-time separating consumers from getting their hands on the geek goodness we spied last week. For those who couldn’t attend the show, it can be difficult navigating the CES myriad of strategic product blitzes, press releases, and unveiling videos. So we whipped up a quick cheat-sheet... HP has peeled the covers off some more cool gear at CES 2018 and one of the coolest things in the mix is the Omen X 65 Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD). This is a gigantic 65-inch 4K UHD HDR-10 monitor for you to get your game on in the living room, or your man/woman cave.  The display has a 120Hz refresh rate, ultra-low latency, is designed for gaming with NVIDIA G-SYNC and features NVIDIA SHIELD integration. HP is mum on pricing right now, but the launch is set for fall 2018. HP also has a new camera that it says is intended to "help reinvent creative workflows and spark spontaneous real-time sharing of documents and physical work product." The camera is called the... HP is set to drop a very powerful convertible laptop on the masses at CES 2018. In fact, HP claims that the machine is the world's most powerful convertible PC, and we have no reason to doubt the company. The Spectre x360 15 is available with one of two potent processors with equally competent graphics subsystems. The first available is an 8th generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor that is paired with Pascal-based GeForce MX150 graphics. The second, and possibly more entertaining pairing is the 8th generation Core i7-8705G processor, which includes an on-package AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics card. Despite the fact that Intel has billed its new Core processors with Radeon RX Vega M GPUs as... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard's new Spectre x360 15 with Intel Core i7 8705G processor and Radeon RX Vega M graphics is no doubt the star of CES for the company, but it has a whole portfolio of new products on display. Among the newcomers include the ENVY x2 tablet and the chic Pavilion Wave desktop PC. Kicking things off is the ENVY x2, which is an always-connected PC made possible by an optional integrated Intel XMM LTE modem. Powering the Windows 10-based tablet are 7th generation Intel Core Y-Series processors that can be equipped with up to 8GB of LPDDR3 memory and up to a 256GB PCIe SSD. Given that this is a tablet, it is dominated by a 12.3-inch WUXGA+ display that is covered in Gorilla Glass 4. The... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard has issued a voluntary recall on batteries used in more than a dozen laptop models that were sold between December 2015 and December 2017. According to the recall notice, affected batteries are at risk of overheating and catching fire. So far, HP has received eight reports of battery packs getting too hot and melting or charring. Three of those incidents resulted in property damage totaling $4,500, and in one instance a user suffered a "minor injury" from a first-degree burn to the hand. Units with affected batteries were sold through Best Buy and other stores and authorized dealers across the nation. They were also sold online at places like Amazon and HP's own web store. Models... Hewlett-Packard has come under increased scrutiny over the past week after it was uncovered that keylogging software was found in a Synaptics touchpad driver installed on its laptop computers. The keylogger was present in debugging code, and was thankfully disabled by default. However, an attacker with physical (or remote) access to a computer could have activated the keylogger by modifying a registry key for their own nefarious purposes. Security researcher Michael Myng was the first to discover the inactive keylogger while attempting modify the backlight levels on an HP laptop keyboard. It was during his investigation into the driver, SynTP.sys, that he came across the dormant code. Naturally,... Read more...

We could have predicted that HP would refresh its laptop lineup after Intel introduced its 8th Generation Core processor family in mobile form (Kaby Lake Refresh, or Kaby Lake-R, not to be confused with Coffee Lake on the desktop). By extension, our crystal ball, if we had one, would have also told us the new lineup would be faster than the previous generation, especially in multi-threaded applications where upgrading from a dual-core 7th Generation CPU to a quad-core 8th Generation chip would pay the biggest dividends. But what we could not have foreseen is that subtle changes beyond swapping out the engine that drives its systems would add up to an appreciably superior experience. Spoiler—it... Read more...
Some HP laptop customers are outraged over the discovery a piece of hidden software that is getting installed and running without their consent. It is a Windows telemetry serviced called HP Touchpoint Analytics Client that harvests telemetry information that is used by HP Touchpoint's analytical services. it seems to send data to HP once per day, though users are also complaining that it bogs down system performance. As Ricky Ricardo would often tell Lucy, HP, you have some explaining to do. "HP Touchpoint Analytics Client was installed on my computer without my consent, I'm assuming it was installed in the background as an update to H{ support or framework. However it happened I don't appreciate... Read more...
AMD’s Zen processor microarchitecture is targeted for deployment across the company’s entire processor product stack, from desktop with Ryzen and Threadripper, to the data center with EPYC, and finally in laptops and convertibles with Ryzen Mobile. Ryzen is set to yet again take on Intel’s dominant position in the market. However, in this latest implementation, Zen is being coupled with AMD’s Vega graphics cores for a fully integrated laptop solution with the potential for a significantly more robust multimedia and gaming experience as a result. On the desktop, Ryzen has proven itself to be very competitive versus Intel Core series processors, especially considering... Read more...
Overwatch is one of the most popular shooters on the planet, and has had some cool Halloween content for fans recently. It is also the basis for some of the biggest eSports tournaments out there. The game currently has about 35 million monthly players and thanks to its popularity, the Blizzard Entertainment Overwatch League has landed two major sponsors that have the pockets deep enough to offer up prize money to the gamers fighting for the win: HP and Intel. HP has said that its Omen by HP gamer-centric brand will be a multi-year sponsor for the Overwatch League. The official announcement of the sponsorship was made at the BlizzCon 2017 event in California. With a brand like HP sponsoring... Read more...
Microsoft may have dazzled the masses yesterday with the announcement of the Surface Book 2 family (which is available in two screen sizes the time around), but Hewlett-Packard is aiming squarely at creative professionals with its new ZBook x2. HP bills the device as the "world's most powerful and first detachable PC workstation". If you look at the ZBook x2's specs, you can see why HP has come to this conclusion. At its heart, the ZBook x2 has a 14-inch 4K display, with optional 10-bit HP DreamColor support reaching 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut. The tablet comes with a full-size aluminum LED backlit keyboard that turns it into a fully-fledged laptop. When disconnected from the tablet,... Read more...
It appears that Hewlett-Packard has a bone to pick with Microsoft, and it's in regards to the latter's failed execution in the smartphone operating system space. While Microsoft had been the primary manufacturer of Windows 10 Mobile devices with its Lumia line, it had also recruited big name OEMs like HP to bring their own unique designs to the table. HP answered with the Elite X3 (read our full review here), which banked heavily on the Windows 10 Mobile Continuum experience. Featuring a 6-inch display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage (with microSD expansion), the flagship device used Continuum to turn into a [nearly] full-fledged Windows 10 desktop machine... Hewlett-Packard is taking its premium PC lineup to the next level with the introduction of the new Spectre 13 and Spectre x360 13. Both notebooks feature premium materials including a CNC machine aluminum body, available 4K displays and 8th generation Intel Core processors. Starting with the Spectre 13, HP says that this is the world's thinnest touch notebook, and features a 13.3-inch display with micro-edge bezels that is covered in Gorilla Glass for added strength and durability. That display comes standard in Full HD resolution, but if you have the extra cash, we'd recommend upgrading to the 4K option. On the hardware front, buyers can choose from 8th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors... Read more...
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) allowed a Russian defense agency to comb over the source code of cyber defense software used by the Pentagon to secure its computer network from cyber attacks. It is said this was done as part of an attempt by HPE to gain the necessary certifications to see sell similar software in the former Soviet Union in the private sector. The software, called ArcSight, is a central piece of cyber security for many parts of the US military, including the Army, Air Force, and Navy. It alerts authorities of suspected attempts of cyber espionage, picking up on suspicious activity such as multiple failed login attempts and other things that could point towards a possible cyber... Earlier this year, Hewlett-Packard launched the Chromebook x360 11 G1 Education, which is quite a mouthful to say we might add. The rugged little device was designed to take punishment from unrelenting school children, and HP now feels that the convertible has the chops to make it in the mainstream consumer market. The device makes the transition with minimal changes, although we're proud to announce that it has a much simpler name this time around: Chromebook x360. Like its education-centric counterpart, the Chromebook x360 is powered by a dual-core Celeron N3350 processor that is paired up with 4GB of RAM. 16GB or 32GB of eMMC storage can installed in the machine, and you'll find a smallish... Back in late June, AMD announced that it would be rolling out a Ryzen Pro line of CPUs aimed at desktops in the professional workplace. Today is the day that products with Ryzen Pro inside launch and AMD counts some of the biggest names in the computer industry as partners with workstations and desktops from Dell, Lenovo, and HP coming. AMD's Kevin Lensing spent a bit of time laying out what AMD is cooking up with Ryzen Pro noting that this is part of AMD's "return to innovation for high-performance PCs." Ryzen Pro is a commercial CPU for AMD with the consumer Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 3 parts having previously launched. The Ryzen part that computer enthusiasts are most excited about are... While VR is the big thing for gaming, there is another similar tech that PC makers and software giant Microsoft really want to take off in a big way and that is mixed reality. VR and mixed reality are similar in that both have virtual constructs in them, but in VR everything that the user of the tech sees is virtual whereas mixed reality overlays virtual objects with your real world environment. Mixed reality has big potential to revolutionize industry with the ability to help train new workers and to bring gaming into your home in a new way. Microsoft writes, "A little over ten months ago our mixed reality journey took a leap forward when we announced that the world’s largest PC makers were... Read more...
