OnePlus burst onto the Android smartphone scene by offering a lot of features and performance for not a lot of money. However, in recent years, we've seen the prices of its devices creep upwards, making them closer in parity to some of the big names in the Android world. This year's OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro start at $699 and $899 respectively, but it looks as though there will be a cheaper offering coming later this year. The device is reportedly called the OnePlus Z, which would be the first new mid-range offering from the company since the OnePlus X debuted nearly 5 years ago. pic.twitter.com/wcD3wH4bVb — Max J. The launch of the OnePlus 8 Pro is getting off to a bit of a rocky start. On paper, it's certainly a worthy successor to previous OnePlus handsets, and is priced competitively for a premium phone. However, display and compatibility woes have marred the release. As it pertains to the latter, apparently the OnePlus 8 Pro has not yet been fully validated for Verizon's wireless network. OnePlus 8 Pro owners have posted various complaints on the OnePlus forums, in regards to getting their handsets working correctly on Verizon's network. Some claim they are having trouble sending and receiving SMS text messages, while others say they are unable to make or receive phone calls. So, what's going on? The... Read more...
OnePlus 8 Pro preorders are starting to arrive ahead of the official launch at retail stores on April 29th. Some who received the device early are already complaining that there are screen issues with the high-end smartphone. Among the screen issues that have been plaguing owners are crushed/clipped blacks, low brightness irregularities, "green-tint" issues, image retention, and lines appearing around the punch-hole camera cutout. OnePlus is already promising that a fix is coming, as it is aware of the issues. Some of the problems, like brightness uniformity, are typical for all OLED smartphones. Problems with crushed/clipped black colors are expected be fixable with software. Some owners are... Read more...
For the first time ever, OnePlus is getting ready to launch a smartphone with built-in wireless charging support. While now a fairly standard feature on many smartphones, the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro will be the first to feature wireless charging, with OnePlus putting its stamp on the technology with a 30W charging stand. Yes, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also work with Qi wireless chargers, but the 30W stand OnePlus is readying will make quicker work of reviving an exhausted battery. How so? It will be capable of taking the capacious 4,500 mAh battery from 1 to 50 percent in only 30 minutes. That's much faster than the typical wireless chargers that are available for Apple's iPhone devices and Samsung's... Read more...
Some official renders have leaked of the incoming OnePlus 8 that shows a couple of the color options available for the device. The images show an interesting new color variant called Interstellar Glow. This color option starts at a purple color near the top on the back of the phone and fades to a purple hue, to a lighter violet to orange, to red, and then to yellow-orange on the bottom in the render. It's a very cool color option for the smartphone, but we're a bit unsure of exactly how the phone will look. While it looks like a fading transition color in the leaked rendering, there is some indication that it may be a color-shifting type of paint that looks like a different shade depending on... I will never fully understand why supposedly 'leaked' photos generally tend to be taken in poor lighting, are blurry, or are otherwise of crappy quality. Sure, it is entirely possible that these are controlled leaks, and manufacturers want to hold the final shots close to the vest, but why? Perhaps it is a question I will explore in depth at another date. For now, take a gander at a couple of leaked shots depicting the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro. Leaks and rumors related to the unreleased OnePlus 8 Pro have been working their way through the web for several months now, dating back to at least October of last year. That is when some renders emerged revealing a punch-hole design on the display, along... Read more...
We pretty much assumed this would be the case, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed this morning that its 8 Series smartphones will be going "all in" with 5G connectivity when they are released later this year. Lau confirmed this bit of information first in a Twitter post, and then in an interview with CNET. But the inclusion of 5G connectivity means that pricing will also have to increase to compensate. OnePlus has always valued itself as providing a lot of bang for the buck with its smartphones, but the 5G revolution will put pressure on that position. The delicate issue of pricing was touched on by Lau in the interview, with him stating, "We've always had a position in creating... Read more...
OnePlus has something up its sleeve for next week, and what exactly it is we don't know. OnePlus India is teasing an unveil for March 3rd. While we aren't sure what it is, OnePlus has reportedly made it clear that it's not a new phone or commercial product. The teaser video on the OnePlus India website shows something constructed out of metal, what exactly it is we have no idea, but it looks intricate with precision fit and finish, maybe a gimbal of some sort? But it's not a commercial product... We're perplexed.  We do know that the unveil isn't for the OnePlus 8 that fans of the brand are looking forward to. While the new product launch is a mystery, there has been something OnePlus 8... Read more...
Although the Samsung Galaxy S20 family might have kicked off the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 festivities for 2020 flagship Android smartphones, it certainly won't be the last new device announced. One of the next smartphones to come down the pipeline will be the OnePlus 8 Pro. In addition to the aforementioned Snapdragon 865 SoC, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also come with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. It's said the SoC will be paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM depending on whether you opt for 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. On the display front, it's expected that the smartphone's OLED will measure 6.5 inches with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. pic.twitter.com/laO3szAcsM... Read more...
The OnePlus 7T has always struck us as being a very compelling smartphone with excellent performance, a gorgeous display, and value pricing. We reviewed the smartphone back in early October 2019 and came away duly impressed with what it has to offer. The OnePlus 7T's $599 price tag was already an incredible bargain compared to flagship smartphones from Samsung and Apple, but OnePlus is increasing its value proposition with its current sale. You can now get the OnePlus 7T for a low, low price of $499 direct from OnePlus. To sweeten the deal even further, OnePlus is throwing in a set of its Bullets Wireless 2 headphones for free. The Bullets Wireless 2 have an MSRP of $99, which makes this bundle... Read more...
There is little doubt that OnePlus has not heard the call for wireless charging support to finally be a feature of the company's smartphones—users have been clamoring for the feature for quite some time now. Don't bother finding a mountaintop to shout the request from, however, as it's probably going to find its way to the OnePlus 8 series. How do I know? Well, I don't know, not for sure, anyway. However, OnePlus has seemingly provided a gigantic hint by joining the Wireless Power Consortium. That is not something a company does unless it is interested in wireless charging, just as you don't purchase NFL Sunday Ticket if you have no intention of watching football games. Rumors have been... Read more...
OnePlus has been able to build a reputation and a following by offering high-end features in Android handsets that undercut the competition on price. The OnePlus 7T, for example, is every bit a premium Android phone, but is significantly cheaper than some of the $1,000 top-shelf handsets on the market. That said, where is the wireless charging feature? Well, it might be coming to the OnePlus 8 Pro. For whatever reason, wireless charging is an increasingly popular feature that has, up to this point, eluded OnePlus owners. Instead, OnePlus has been hanging its hat on Warp Charge technology. Users who shell out for the $30 Warp Charge adapter can take their OnePlus 7T from a comatose state to a... Read more...
Few people will miss the era of 60Hz smartphones when it finally comes to an end someday. Who knows when that day will actually arrive, but in the meantime, smartphone makers are slowing migrating to faster displays. To show the benefits of a faster refresh rate, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau uploaded a couple of video clips to Twitter highlighting the 120Hz display on the upcoming OnePlus 8. I've often said that 120Hz is 'gaming phone' territory, and that's true—the Razer Phone 1 and Razer Phone 2 both sport a 120Hz display, as does the ASUS ROG Phone II. At the same time, we are seeing non-gaming phones adopt the faster refresh rate as well. OnePlus confirmed it will arrive on its OnePlus 8 series,... Read more...
You have to hand it to OnePlus, the spunky smartphone maker is finding ways to innovate in a field that has begun to feel a bit stagnant in recent years. As such, it will be interesting to see what the OnePlus 8 series brings to the table when it releases. In the meantime, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed the OnePlus 8 will ship with a 120Hz screen. That is 'gaming phone' territory. For example, both the Razer Phone 1 and 2 sport a 120Hz display, and ASUS made the leap to 120Hz as well with its ROG Phone II (the first generation ROG Phone featured a 90Hz display, which is still fast for a smartphone). To be clear, though, OnePlus is not marketing its next flagship as a gaming phone. Lao shared... Read more...
For years, smartphone makers have concentrated on delivering premium-looking designs, even for mid-range and entry-level models. More recently, the focus has shifted towards cramming as many camera sensors as possible into these portable gadgets, and in some cases, they are eyesores. What's the solution? Based on what OnePlus is working on, a parlor trick could be the key. Over on Twitter, the smartphone maker teased a glimpse of a prototype phone it is calling the OnePlus Concept One. It uses "groundbreaking 'invisible camera' and color-shifting glass technology" to essentially hide the multiple camera sensors and LED flash that are plopped into a circular protrusion on the rear of the phone.... OnePlus has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. This past month, the company experienced its second major security breach in two years, resulting in the leak of personal details like customer name, email address, physical address, and phone number. In an effort to get a handle on its security shortcomings, OnePlus has announced a new bug bounty program called the OnePlus Security Response Center. This particular bounty is being run by OnePlus, and is open to both academic institutions and security professionals. OnePlus is hoping that participants in the program will "proactively search for and report" on security issues and threats that affect its products and systems, including... Read more...
This may come as a shock to some, but OnePlus is designing another smartphone! Okay, so that's not exactly the surprise of the century (or year or month or...). But in addition to the usual hardware refreshes that OnePlus is known for, the company is also planning to showcase its first concept phone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month. That's right, OnePlus has never before introduced a concept smartphone. That will change in January when it trots out the appropriately named OnePlus Concept One, the company announced today on its six-year anniversary. "For the past six years, OnePlus has been striving to share the absolute best in technology with the world, producing a total... Read more...
There might not be all that many surprises from OnePlus in 2020, at least in regards to its OnePlus 8 series of smartphones. We have already seen leaked renders of the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro over the past few months. Now we can add a OnePlus 8 Lite model to the mix, with a fresh set of renders showing off the device. In case you missed any of the past leaks, the OnePlus 8 will supposedly launch with a curved-edge display sporting a punch-hole design, and three cameras on the rear on the device. The OnePlus 8 Pro, meanwhile, sports a similar design with the same curved-edge display and punch-hole design for the front camera, but with a quad-camera arrangement on the back. Both of those are... Read more...
We have sung the praises of the OnePlus 7 Pro here at HotHardware before, and OnePlus is luckily running a Black Friday promotion that is knocking a big chunk off the flagship smartphone's price tag. OnePlus is already known for attractive pricing for its Android smartphones, so this particular configuration’s $699 price tag was already among the lowest for devices in its class. However, today's Black Friday sale sees the OnePlus 7 Pro discounted by $150, which brings its price down to an incredibly hot $549. Unfortunately, that price will only get you the Mirror Gray model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Almond and Nebula Blue colors are currently out of stock,... Read more...
Nearly two years ago, OnePlus announced that it had experienced a security breach that resulted in the credit card details of roughly 40,000 customers being stolen. "We are also working with our current payment providers to implement a more secure credit card payment method, as well as conducting an in-depth security audit," wrote the company at the time. "All these measures will help us prevent such incidents from happening in the future." Now, OnePlus is reporting that it has experienced yet another security incident, and this time the company says that personal information from some of its users was accessed by an "unauthorized party". OnePlus is not naming this third-party company/vendor,... Read more...
It's only been a couple of months since we posted a review of the OnePlus 7T, but in the time that has elapsed, there have been numerous leaks and rumors centered on the unannounced OnePlus 8 Pro. If you were hoping for a reprieve from another leak today, well, our apologies. Instead of a reprieve, you get some diagrams to look at. The diagrams are mostly in line with previously leaked renders, so there's not a lot that is new. However, they do outline (quite literally) some changes OnePlus is making to its next flagship phone, assuming these are legit. Perhaps the most interesting (to some people) is the pill-shaped cutout in the front of the handset. The OnePlus 7T debuted with a teardrop notch... Read more...
Following up on the launch of the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro, we can now turn our attention to what comes next from OnePlus. That would be the OnePlus 8 family. More renders have come to light, and they show the OnePlus 8 Pro sporting a full-front display with a punch-hole design for the front camera. Looking back, the recently launched OnePlus 7T featured a teardrop notch for the front camera, similar in style to the Essential Phone. Prior to that, the OnePlus 7 Pro from earlier this year used a motorized pop-up camera to keep the front display nice and clean. A punch-hole cutout for the front camera is one that has worked for Samsung, and if the leaked press renders are accurate, that is... Read more...
