There's been a lot activity in the mid-range smartphone market in recent months with new entries like the $399 iPhone SE and $399 Galaxy A51 drawing the attention of consumers. The latter has been particularly attractive given that it hit a low $269 barely one month after it first launched in the United States. OnePlus is looking to get in on a piece of that low-cost action and the company already confirmed that it was bringing a new mid-range smartphone to market, which is rumored to be called the OnePlus Z. Now, a tweet from OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei could give us a hint at what price the smartphone will start at; and it's a shocker. Pei's tweet makes reference... Read more...
OnePlus Z information has been leaking at a rapid clip in recent weeks, and today's latest reveal brings a few of the missing pieces surrounding the launch of the mid-range smartphone. India has emerged as a hotbed of activity in the low-cost smartphone realm, with major smartphone OEMs pouring resources into the country. OnePlus is no exception, and will reportedly launch the OnePlus Z in India on July 10th. According to Android Central's sources, this is a "tentative" date, but barring any major hiccups between now and then, that's likely when we should expect to see what smartphone. One other previously unknown surrounding the OnePlus Z is its price, which will be critical to... Read more...
There's no question that OnePlus is hopping back on the mid-range bandwagon after a half-decade absence, as the move was finally confirmed last month by company founder and CEO Pete Lau. “We can look at it as having a more affordable product offering,” said Lau at the time. “But all products that still remain up to the OnePlus standard… and through this enabling, more people to have access to OnePlus products." While we know many of the alleged details surrounding the smartphone, one of unknown pieces to the puzzle was which processor the company would use for the OnePlus Z (the rumored named for the mid-range smartphone). Rumors have suggested the... Read more...
One of the interesting features of the camera for the OnePlus 8 Pro is the Photocrom color mode. The mode allows the smartphone's infrared camera to see through certain materials, such as black plastic, to give a glimpse at what electronics and other devices look like inside. As cool as that function was for peering inside of electronic devices, details soon surfaced that the mode could also allow people to look through some thin black clothing. The ability to see through clothing led OnePlus to issue a software update intended to eliminate the filter in the Chinese market Hydrogen OS. However, when the software update rolled out, it removed the feature for users in other countries, which OnePlus... Read more...
OnePlus was once the champion of introducing flagship smartphones without the “flagship price” that is often associated with them. However, over the years, each new OnePlus flagship has adhered to the “price creep” that has become the norm with new smartphone releases. Things came to a head this year with the OnePlus 8 Pro, which starts at $899 – not too far off from the Samsung Galaxy S20 family and Motorola Edge+. Sure, the standard OnePlus 8 starts at $699, but it skips some key features like wireless charging and a 120Hz display. For those that want a current-generation OnePlus smartphone, but don’t want to fork over at least $700, the company... Read more...
For the time being, OnePlus is disabling the "Color Filter" on its OnePlus 8 Pro handset through an over-the-air software update. The decision to turn the feature off came after the phone's ability to see through certain objects came to light, giving it a sort of x-ray vision effect. While certainly neat, there are some privacy implications that come with that ability. In case you missed our previous coverage, the OnePlus 8 Pro's Color Filter uses a Photochrome mode on the handset to take infrared photography. This is what allowed it to penetrate certain objects—in the photo above, for example, we took a picture of an LG remote control using the Color Filter. As you can see, it was able... Read more...
Anyone in the market for a new smartphone who doesn't mind a device that's a few years old should check out the deal B&H has going on the OnePlus 6T smartphone for the T-Mobile network. The mirror black smartphone has 128 GB of storage and is unlocked. The normal purchase price for the device is $549.99. The sale is offering the device for $299.99, which is a discount of $250 from the regular price. The catch is that the offer ends today at 11:59 PM EDT. Another caveat is that the smartphone is currently out of stock but will be back in stock in 1 to 3 business days. Buyers can add the smartphone to their cart and purchase it even though it's out of stock right now. OnePlus 6T 128GB Unlocked... Read more...
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a fantastic smartphone from top to bottom, with its 120Hz OLED display, fast Snapdragon 865 processor paired with 12GB of RAM, great build quality and ergonomics, and exceptional camera performance. Oh, and it can see through plastic objects as well. That's right, the OnePlus 8 Pro boasts a bit of x-ray vision. We were not aware of this initially, until a user on Reddit posed the question about the potential capability, based on what they were told by a friend. "One of my friends claimed that the [OnePlus 8 Pro's] color filter sensor is able to see through a thin layer of plastic to see the electronic components behind it? Can anyone with the phone validate this claim for... Read more...

Typically, when a smartphone maker builds a mobile phone, it makes a device that may have slightly different hardware inside for some carriers, but is physically the same on the outside. That means any case designed for the phone will fit all carrier versions. However, that's not the case with the OnePlus 8 5G sold at Verizon, known as the OnePlus 8 5G UW. Verizon's version of the OnePlus 8 is physically different on the outside compared to versions of the smartphone available from other carriers. The external differences are significant enough that Verizon's device won't fit in cases made for any other version of the smartphone, because this particular version places the volume buttons in a... The highly anticipated OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are on sale starting today, and lucky for prospective Android flagship shoppers, we have our full deep dive review on the pages ahead. OnePlus has made a name for itself over the years, especially with Android enthusiasts, for building high quality devices with thoughtful feature inclusions, while limiting costly unnecessary features and delivering exceptional value at almost unheard-of price points. Top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered devices with more RAM, more storage, and OnePlus' lean, mean Android-based Oxygen OS -- at price points hundreds less than competitive devices -- has been the hallmark of the brand. However, this new OnePlus 8... Read more...
OnePlus burst onto the Android smartphone scene by offering a lot of features and performance for not a lot of money. However, in recent years, we've seen the prices of its devices creep upwards, making them closer in parity to some of the big names in the Android world. This year's OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro start at $699 and $899 respectively, but it looks as though there will be a cheaper offering coming later this year. The device is reportedly called the OnePlus Z, which would be the first new mid-range offering from the company since the OnePlus X debuted nearly 5 years ago. pic.twitter.com/wcD3wH4bVb — Max J. The launch of the OnePlus 8 Pro is getting off to a bit of a rocky start. On paper, it's certainly a worthy successor to previous OnePlus handsets, and is priced competitively for a premium phone. However, display and compatibility woes have marred the release. As it pertains to the latter, apparently the OnePlus 8 Pro has not yet been fully validated for Verizon's wireless network. OnePlus 8 Pro owners have posted various complaints on the OnePlus forums, in regards to getting their handsets working correctly on Verizon's network. Some claim they are having trouble sending and receiving SMS text messages, while others say they are unable to make or receive phone calls. So, what's going on? The... Read more...
OnePlus 8 Pro preorders are starting to arrive ahead of the official launch at retail stores on April 29th. Some who received the device early are already complaining that there are screen issues with the high-end smartphone. Among the screen issues that have been plaguing owners are crushed/clipped blacks, low brightness irregularities, "green-tint" issues, image retention, and lines appearing around the punch-hole camera cutout. OnePlus is already promising that a fix is coming, as it is aware of the issues. Some of the problems, like brightness uniformity, are typical for all OLED smartphones. Problems with crushed/clipped black colors are expected be fixable with software. Some owners are... Read more...
For the first time ever, OnePlus is getting ready to launch a smartphone with built-in wireless charging support. While now a fairly standard feature on many smartphones, the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro will be the first to feature wireless charging, with OnePlus putting its stamp on the technology with a 30W charging stand. Yes, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also work with Qi wireless chargers, but the 30W stand OnePlus is readying will make quicker work of reviving an exhausted battery. How so? It will be capable of taking the capacious 4,500 mAh battery from 1 to 50 percent in only 30 minutes. That's much faster than the typical wireless chargers that are available for Apple's iPhone devices and Samsung's... Read more...
Some official renders have leaked of the incoming OnePlus 8 that shows a couple of the color options available for the device. The images show an interesting new color variant called Interstellar Glow. This color option starts at a purple color near the top on the back of the phone and fades to a purple hue, to a lighter violet to orange, to red, and then to yellow-orange on the bottom in the render. It's a very cool color option for the smartphone, but we're a bit unsure of exactly how the phone will look. While it looks like a fading transition color in the leaked rendering, there is some indication that it may be a color-shifting type of paint that looks like a different shade depending on... I will never fully understand why supposedly 'leaked' photos generally tend to be taken in poor lighting, are blurry, or are otherwise of crappy quality. Sure, it is entirely possible that these are controlled leaks, and manufacturers want to hold the final shots close to the vest, but why? Perhaps it is a question I will explore in depth at another date. For now, take a gander at a couple of leaked shots depicting the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro. Leaks and rumors related to the unreleased OnePlus 8 Pro have been working their way through the web for several months now, dating back to at least October of last year. That is when some renders emerged revealing a punch-hole design on the display, along... Read more...
We pretty much assumed this would be the case, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed this morning that its 8 Series smartphones will be going "all in" with 5G connectivity when they are released later this year. Lau confirmed this bit of information first in a Twitter post, and then in an interview with CNET. But the inclusion of 5G connectivity means that pricing will also have to increase to compensate. OnePlus has always valued itself as providing a lot of bang for the buck with its smartphones, but the 5G revolution will put pressure on that position. The delicate issue of pricing was touched on by Lau in the interview, with him stating, "We've always had a position in creating... Read more...
OnePlus has something up its sleeve for next week, and what exactly it is we don't know. OnePlus India is teasing an unveil for March 3rd. While we aren't sure what it is, OnePlus has reportedly made it clear that it's not a new phone or commercial product. The teaser video on the OnePlus India website shows something constructed out of metal, what exactly it is we have no idea, but it looks intricate with precision fit and finish, maybe a gimbal of some sort? But it's not a commercial product... We're perplexed.  We do know that the unveil isn't for the OnePlus 8 that fans of the brand are looking forward to. While the new product launch is a mystery, there has been something OnePlus 8... Read more...
Although the Samsung Galaxy S20 family might have kicked off the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 festivities for 2020 flagship Android smartphones, it certainly won't be the last new device announced. One of the next smartphones to come down the pipeline will be the OnePlus 8 Pro. In addition to the aforementioned Snapdragon 865 SoC, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also come with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. It's said the SoC will be paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM depending on whether you opt for 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. On the display front, it's expected that the smartphone's OLED will measure 6.5 inches with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. pic.twitter.com/laO3szAcsM... Read more...
The OnePlus 7T has always struck us as being a very compelling smartphone with excellent performance, a gorgeous display, and value pricing. We reviewed the smartphone back in early October 2019 and came away duly impressed with what it has to offer. The OnePlus 7T's $599 price tag was already an incredible bargain compared to flagship smartphones from Samsung and Apple, but OnePlus is increasing its value proposition with its current sale. You can now get the OnePlus 7T for a low, low price of $499 direct from OnePlus. To sweeten the deal even further, OnePlus is throwing in a set of its Bullets Wireless 2 headphones for free. The Bullets Wireless 2 have an MSRP of $99, which makes this bundle... Read more...
There is little doubt that OnePlus has not heard the call for wireless charging support to finally be a feature of the company's smartphones—users have been clamoring for the feature for quite some time now. Don't bother finding a mountaintop to shout the request from, however, as it's probably going to find its way to the OnePlus 8 series. How do I know? Well, I don't know, not for sure, anyway. However, OnePlus has seemingly provided a gigantic hint by joining the Wireless Power Consortium. That is not something a company does unless it is interested in wireless charging, just as you don't purchase NFL Sunday Ticket if you have no intention of watching football games. Rumors have been... Read more...
