The battle royale genre has exploded in popularity over the last couple of years with titles like Fortnite and PUBG leading the way. Needless to say, many developers are looking to get in on the battle royale free-for-all, and the latest is Tencent Next Studios with the announcement of Synced: Off-Planet. Synced: Off-Planet puts a new spin on the genre with gameplay that seems to combine inspiration from other fictional works like World War Z and Left for Dead. You compete in a team of three; with two other human players serving beside you. Faced against you will be 45 other human opponents... and around 1,500 AI zombies (called Nanos) in a fight for survival. Having 48 humans (16 teams of 3)... Read more...
When I was 16 years old, I remember cruising the mall and local stores in search for a job that would inevitably pay minimum wage, as many jobs do at that age. Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf eschewed the traditional route that most teens take, and collected a cool $3 million from Epic Games for dominating at the Fortnite World Cup. Yes, at 16 years old, Bugha is now a millionaire. He become one after winning the Solo event on the third and final day of the Fortnite World Cup, scoring 59 points to take a big lead over the next closest competitor. His $3 million payday ranks as the largest ever for a single player tournament in the esports category. "Words can't really explain. I'm so happy. Everything... Read more...
There's a new Call of Duty arriving later this year, and it's a reboot of Modern Warfare. The first Modern Warfare launched over a decade ago, and the most recent outing was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.  However, thanks to a new leak, we're learning more about the rumored battle royale mode that will be included in the game. The information comes from the YouTube channel TheGamingRevoluion, which says that the battle royale mode will allow up to 152 players to compete at once on a map. Speaking of maps, it's reported that it will be a whopping 3 times larger than Blackout, which was included with Black Ops 4. If that wasn't enough, it seems that developer Infinity Ward doesn't appear... Read more...
Apex Legends fans have a lot going on right now to soak in. This week dragons have turned up in the game that drop loot when shot, but some wondered how you actually kill them and what might happen if you do. A lot more is going in the Apex Legends world right now, including hints at a new Legends for players to enjoy. It wasn't long ago that a new Apex legends character was revealed called Wattson. Just recently, however, dataminers have dug up some details on the next character added to the game and rumors say it will be a character called Crypto.  Crypto is a character that is believed to have been hiding in plain sight since the game launched. Crypto was also part of the leak in March... Read more...
Bethesda was at E3 2019, and during its showcase, it offered up a pair of trailers that show all the gaming goodness coming to Fallout 76 this year. Gamers have been very critical of Fallout 76 since it launched with many fans of the franchise seeing aspects of the game as nothing more than a money grab by Bethesda. Recently, Bethesda executive Todd Howard announced that he recognized the failures the game was making before it launched noting that some of the criticism of the game was "well deserved." During the Bethesda E3 2019 Showcase, the game publisher announced that a pair of new and game-changing updates were coming to Fallout 76. The best news for gamers who are still giving Fallout 76... Apex Legends is still a popular battle royale game that is free to play, like its Fortnite counterpart. Respawn is always updating the game and trying to fight cheaters to keep Apex Legends fun for everyone. It announced last month that it had banned 770,000 cheaters. Respawn also announced that a significant update was inbound that would bring big performance improvements. Apex Legends has now announced Season 02 with a new Legend and a new weapon. The new Legend is a female character named Wattson that looks sweet, but can be quite shocking to those who underestimate her. Wattson is a Static Defender that uses electricity to her advantage. Wattson's tactical ability is Perimeter Security, her... Read more...
Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world with massive Hollywood movie crossover events and special edition Xbox consoles to underscore its popularity. The game also has a dark underbelly with over 1,000 cheaters banned during the Fortnite World Cup alone. Furthering that drama, Fortnite also has one of its top streamers fighting a very public battle against his team over an allegedly oppressive contract. The world of eSports is likened to the "Wild West" by many, as there are no rules and regulations covering players and teams. Some compare the current environment between players and teams to the way Baseball was before players unionized. Many are waiting to see what happened between... Read more...
The mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUGB) sees over 70 million average daily users in China, but even so, Tencent Holdings is yanking the game and replacing it with a more government friendly alternative called Game for Peace. Analysts believe it could generate over $1 billion annually through in-game purchases. Tencent announced the launch of Game for Peace on Weibo, where a Google translation pegs the name as Peace Elite. Whatever you want to call it, the game is not PUBG. This is a big deal for Tencent. PUBG Mobile is a big time money maker for the developer, with users having forked over more than $320 million, based on data from Sensor Tower. Nevertheless, its removal from... Read more...
Epic Games is continuously working on new gameplay mechanics and features for the popular battle royale game Fortnite. Most recently it announced a crossover event with Avengers: End Game that saw Thanos come to the game for players to fight. Epic also launched a new patch this month bringing the game to version 8.30 and adding in reboot vans and a high explosive LTM. Typically Fortnite fans love the updates that launch, but many didn't like the 8.20 update that removed a popular game mechanic called siphoning. Siphoning allowed players to get health and shields when they eliminated opponents from the game. Epic says that it removed that mechanic because it made gameplay too aggressive. Epic... Read more...
Fortnite might be feeling more pressure from games like Apex Legends of late, but Fortnite is still extremely popular and doing very well with gamers. One of the keys to Fortnite's success is constant updates such as the recently added 8.30 patch that sees the return of Reboot Vans and a new limited time mode called Fly Explosives. This week Fortnite has Season 8 in full swing meaning there are new challenges to compete in. If you disagree with a certain British royal and want to play Fortnite, but need a bit of help check this out. The folks over at Gamespot cobbled together a map that shows where you can find the jigsaw puzzle pieces that are part of the special challenge this week. Sure it's... Read more...
Maybe it came down to a licensing issue or perhaps publisher Electronic Arts never considered it, but I can't help but there there was a missed, golden opportunity to play Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire to the new gameplay trailer for Battlefield V's upcoming Firestorm battle royale mode. That's okay, though, because the trailer is pretty awesome in its own right. For the most part, Firestorm sticks to the tried-and-true battle royale script, though instead of a semi-invisible barrier closing in on the action, there is a literal firestorm that encompasses the map. This ring of fire shrinks the playable area like any other battle royale, forcing players into tighter confines until a single soldier... Read more...
Apex Legends is one of those super-rare games that seems to come along out of nowhere, and then strikes the right chord with millions upon millions of gamers a mere month after its launch -- over 50 million gamers and counting, in fact. In 2019, it certainly helps to have the phrases "battle royale" and "free-to-play" tied to a game, but developer Respawn has proven once again that "free" games can be great. It takes a good game to hook gamers, and take on Goliaths in the industry, like Fortnite. There are many ways developers of successful games can prolong that success. Actually listening to the concerns of the fan base is key, as is taking care of any bugs or community issues within the game... Read more...
Pitting players in a battle royale scenario where the map shrinks until only one person or squad is left standing is all the rage right now—see the success of PlayerUnknown's Battleground (PUBG), Fortnite, or more recently Apex Legends as evidence of this. Battlefield V will be joining the fray, and a leaked tutorial purportedly gives us a first look at the upcoming mode. It's called Firestorm, and from what I can discern from the tutorial, it will be very similar to PUBG. That's to say you will drop on a map, scrounge around for weapons for yourself and any potentially teammates, and grab backpacks for additional storage capacity on your person. You can also be revived by a teammate while... Read more...
Do you hear that, folks? That’s the sound of potential growing concern over at Epic Games headquarters in Cary, NC. Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella took to Twitter this morning to announce that Apex Legends has surpassed 50 million active users during its first month of availability. That is a staggering figure by any standard, and its growth is far outpacing that of Epic’s Fortnite following its debut. We knew early on that Apex Legends was going to be a bonafide hit. It was announced that 2.5 million people were engaged in the game after 24 hours, and that number hit 10 million in just three days. To put those numbers in perspective, it took Fortnite 2 weeks...
