Back in early August at Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung unveiled two fresh new Android tablets: the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+. We’ve managed to get our hands on the latter of those two, which is a fantastic piece of hardware, and probably the best Android tablet has come across our workbench over the years. As you can see in our hands-on video below, the Galaxy Tab S7 is a premium device and is dominated by a large, gorgeous 12.4-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2800x1752 (WQXGA+) and a fast 120Hz refresh rate. Powering the tablet is Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+. The inclusion of the Snapdragon 865+ also means that that Galaxy... Read more...
We posted our coverage of the various announcements to come from Samsung’s most recent Galaxy Unpacked event as they unfolded on Wednesday. You should check out our coverage of the brand-new Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, along with the new Galaxy Tab S7 and other accessories if you happened to miss it earlier -- we're not going to rehash any of the technical details again here. Originally, we were scheduled to get our hands on some of the devices in time for Unpacked, but Tropical Storm Isaias had other plans for us and prevented a trip into Manhattan to meet with Samsung. Fortunately, the shipping gods were on our side and our Note 20 Ultra arrived only a few short hours after the... Read more...
Samsung has officially announced its true, powerhouse flagship smartphone. No, we're not talking about the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but rather the Galaxy Z Fold 2. This is the follow-up to last year's problem-prone Galaxy Fold, and Samsung is hoping to make a bigger splash in the folding smartphone with improved specifications and useful improvements. For starters, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 takes advantage of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865+ SoC, which features faster GPU and CPU clocks for improved overall performance, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. That means that you should see snappier performance not only when navigating the Android UI or opening your apps, but... Read more...
The first half of 2020 has been dominated by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in the Android flagship phone arena. Packing excellent performance from its mature 7nm process node and a complementary Snapdragon X55 5G modem, the Snapdragon 865 has been a popular choice for OEMs. However, as has been the case for the past few years with Qualcomm's flagship SoCs, the latter half of each year has seen the arrival of a higher clocked Plus variant. We've seen it with the Snapdragon 845+ and Snapdragon 855+; now we have the Snapdragon 865+ Mobile Platform that will be seen in the next round of flagship Android smartphones. Like its predecessors, the Snapdragon 865+ features higher performing CPU and GPU cores.... Read more...
We came away thoroughly impressed with the ASUS ROG Phone II when we reviewed it last year. It offered a compelling balance of performance, a beautiful 120Hz OLED display, and marathon battery life to get you through some intense gaming sessions. Thankfully, ASUS has just confirmed that the ROG Phone III is coming and it won't be a long wait for anxious gamers. The company has posted a countdown timer on its website which indicates that the ROG Phone III will be unveiled on July 22nd. Other than revealing when the phone will be unveiled, ASUS simply says that it will be a "Game Changer". It's expected that the ROG Phone III will be powered by at least some version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon... Read more...
Vivo is known for announcing crazy concept smartphones, but its latest X50 family of smartphones is going straight into production capped off with the X50 Pro and X50 Pro+. Both of these smartphones feature gimbal stabilization, which we're normally accustomed to seeing with third-party add-on solutions like the DJI Osmo Mobile 3. However, Vivo's "Camera Gimbal System" is integrated directly into the smartphone body and provides vastly improved stability of traditional 4-axis systems found on modern flagships. Not only should you be able to take super smooth video with these new smartphones, but you can do so without the added bulk of a handheld attachment. Both the X50 Pro and the X50 Pro... Read more...
For better or worse, COVID-19 has changed our way of life and how we do business – perhaps permanently. For school-age children and the American workforce, that has meant “telecommuting” or working from home instead of alongside peers in the office. Online collaborative platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams have helped to facilitate the physical divide between people, but Qualcomm is pushing for even more advanced collaborative tools through augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, aka extended reality (XR). Qualcomm is touting its XR Optimized Certification Program, which allows its OEM partners to develop XR viewer glasses that can give... Read more...
Given that Qualcomm is the dominant force in the Android realm when it comes to mobile SoCs, it’s easy to forget that there are other competitors out there like Samsung’s Exynos family and offerings from MediaTek. MediaTek raised eyebrows last year with its flagship Dimensity 1000 flagship SoC that offered an integrated 5G modem, and today, the company is announcing an update to that chip called the Dimensity 1000+. While this is not a complete architectural overhaul, its “+” suffix does bring with it some welcome enhancements over the standard Dimensity 1000. For starters, there is now support for 144Hz displays, which should make the SoC more appealing to smartphone... Read more...
Qualcomm made waves with its Snapdragon 865 SoC, but not just because of the performance it delivers. The Snapdragon 865 platform features support for GPU driver upgrades. This is something that is common in PCs, but not so much with smartphones. That changes today with Xiaomi rolling out the first GPU driver update for the Snapdragon 865. The driver itself pertains to the Adreno 650 GPU. It aims to bolster performance in select games, including PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, and Honkai Impact 3rd. The driver upgrade also updates OpenGL ES and Vulkan, according to XDA Developers. In a sense, this is sort of the start of a new era in smartphone gaming, or potentially, at least. "Late last year, Qualcomm... Read more...
The OnePlus Pro 8 has leaked numerous times over the past few months, and the company's CEO has even "teased" certain aspects of the device including first-ever (for the company) wireless charging support. Today, however, the OnePlus 8 Pro is finally official, and it offers quite a lot of bang for the buck. As you might expect for a 2020 flagship, the OnePlus 8 Pro is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865 SoC, which is paired with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. 5G availability in the United States is pretty spotty right now, but it is expected to quickly expand in 2020 with wide penetration in 2021. Of course, OnePlus isn't new to 5G, as the company offered the next-generation wireless... Read more...
Samsung's Galaxy Fold flagship smartphone officially launched during the Fall of 2019 after a lengthy delay due to problems with its display and hinge mechanism. Despite these setbacks, the Galaxy Fold was still quite a breakthrough device thanks to its flexible display and innovative form-factor. Samsung then followed that up with the Galaxy Z Flip, which is a portrait-style folding smartphone with a much more palatable price tag ($1,379 versus $1,980). Now, Samsung is rumored to be far along in development of a true successor to the original Galaxy Fold, and it will be appropriately called the Galaxy Fold 2. According to a report from SamMobile, the Galaxy Fold 2 carries... Read more...
It's been a while since Motorola has released a "true" flagship device with the specs, cameras, and build quality to match top rivals from Samsung and Apple. But the company is looking to answer the call from enthusiasts with the Edge Plus. Thankfully, reliable gadget leaker Evan Blass has given us the best look yet at the Edge Plus thanks to a new set of official, high-resolution renders. We get to see the device from all angles, including a close-up of its "waterfall display" which seems to wrap about half-way down the sides of the device. Also visible are minimal bezels at the top and bottom of the display, along with a single punch hole cut-out for the selfie camera in the top left-hand... Read more...
Back in late April 2019, the Nubia Red Magic 3 gaming smartphone launched with some pretty stout specifications -- for the time -- including a Snapdragon 855 SoC, up to 12GB of RAM, a large 5000 mAh battery and a 90Hz display. Now, ZTE is back with its 2020 edition gaming phone: the Nubia Red Magic 5G. As you might expect from a flagship smartphone released in 2020, the Red Magic 5G is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 SoC, which means that it also features the Snapdragon X55 5G modem (hence the "5G" in its name). There are a number of RAM configurations available including 8GB, 12GB, and a staggering 16GB (a spec that we've seen recently with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra). To keep... Read more...
LG it is ready to jump back into the limelight with the release of its latest flagship mobile device, the V60 ThinQ 5G. As you'd expect from a flagship Android smartphone release in 2020, the V60 ThinQ 5G is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865 SoC which is mandatorily paired with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. The V60 ThinQ 5G follows the trend of larger displays for flagship smartphones, and enters the fray with a 6.8-inch FHD+ (2460x1080) P-OLED FullVision panel. The display features a 20.5:1 aspect ratio and incorporates an in-display fingerprint reader. There's also a punch-hole cutout for the 10MP selfie camera at the top of the display. But LG doesn't stop there; it also offers... Read more...
It looks as though LG had been gearing up to formally introduce its next-generation flagship phone, the V60 ThinQ, at Mobile World Congress (MWC), but that was before the Coronavirus outbreak threw a wrench into those plans. MWC was cancelled after several vendors pulled out of the show. So, where does that leave the V60 ThinQ? That's a good question. While we await an answer, what appears to be the first leaked render of the V60 ThinQ has emerged, courtesy of Android Headlines. As seen in the image above, the supposed render displays Monday, February 24, as the date. Before it was cancelled, MWC was scheduled to run from February 24-27. Maybe LG will still announced the V60 ThinQ on Monday,... Read more...
Although the Samsung Galaxy S20 family might have kicked off the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 festivities for 2020 flagship Android smartphones, it certainly won't be the last new device announced. One of the next smartphones to come down the pipeline will be the OnePlus 8 Pro. In addition to the aforementioned Snapdragon 865 SoC, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also come with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. It's said the SoC will be paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM depending on whether you opt for 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. On the display front, it's expected that the smartphone's OLED will measure 6.5 inches with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. pic.twitter.com/laO3szAcsM... Read more...
The first smartphones using Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 865 SoC will be arriving on the market very shortly. And while many people will be looking forward to the Snapdragon 865 with respect to performance and its accompanying Snapdragon X55 5G modem, it will also usher in the era of 8K video recording for Android smartphones. Qualcomm today is showing us what the Spectra 480 image signal processor (ISP) within the Snapdragon 865 can do. Using a prototype Snapdragon 865 smartphone along with a Sony IMX586 image sensor, Qualcomm was able to capture the footage seen below at 8K, which translates into roughly 33 megapixels per frame. The footage that you see was captured back in November... Read more...
We're just a few weeks away from the launch of Samsung Galaxy S20 family of smartphones, and we're getting our best look yet today at the flagship of the family: the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. [Alleged] renders of the smartphone have been discovered and they largely lineup with the leaks that we've been seeing over the past few months. The leak comes courtesy of Ishan Agarwal and 91mobiles, and we can see right off the bat that the Galaxy S10 Ultra 5G features 2.5D glass up front. This is a departure from previous Galaxy "S" smartphones that feature a more dramatic curve along the edge of the screen. Instead, the display is more akin to what we seen in the Galaxy S10e. Also visible from the... Read more...
What would a smartphone launch be without the usual round of pre-launch leaks and rumors? We may never find out the answer to that question, because frequent leaks are simply part of the game these days (whether they're real or controlled leaks is another matter). And so it goes over at Geekbench, where where a bit of specs and performance data has seemingly been revealed for Samsung's next generation Galaxy S20 handset. Or you can call the Galaxy S11. That is still a possibility, though rumor has it Samsung is rolling with "Galaxy 20" for its next-gen flagship phone. To avoid confusion, we will refer to it as that from here on out. All that really matters is that we are clear on this being the... Read more...
Qualcomm isn't the company looking to take over the mid-range to premium segment of the smartphone market with a new 5G mobile platform. MediaTek is also stepping into the ring with the Dimensity 800 Series, which is a lower-cost version of the Dimensity 1000 Series that was announced late last year. When it comes to performance, MediaTek has outfitted the Dimensity 800’s CPU with a big.LITTLE arrangement featuring four high-performance Cortex-A76 cores paired with four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. Both sets of cores can operate at up to 2GHz. MediaTek has also added a Dimensity 1000-class, 4-core GPU along with its in-house APU 3.0 AI processing engine (up to 2.4 TOPs compute... Read more...

In addition to the XR2 5G next-generation VR platform, new Always-Connected PC processors, and the Snapdragon 765, which will target mainstream, 5G-enabled smartphones next year, Qualcomm also announced its flagship Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform. Just like its previous-gen predecessor, the Snapdragon 855 (and 855+), the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 platform will be the foundation for an array of premium Android smartphones released throughout 2020 (and beyond). Snapdragon 865 Chip Architecture - More Resources, Efficiency And Performance The Snapdragon... Read more...

According to Ice Universe, Samsung has penciled in a mid-February launch for the Galaxy S11 family. More specifically, Ice Universe says that the Galaxy S11 will be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Fold 2 on February 18th, 2020 in San Francisco.
