For almost as long as video games have been around, players have wanted the ability to play against each other no matter what platform they are on. Xbox players want to fight PC gamers and PS4 gamers and vice versa. The catch is that Sony isn’t into cross-platform action. Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan, who is also the VP of Blizzard Entertainment, has let slip that Overwatch players might gain the ability to share progress between game consoles and PCs. Kaplan said in an interview recently that his team has "frequent and ongoing discussions about" adding that feature. Kaplan also noted... Read more...
One of the barriers to VR gaming is the cost of entry. It's generally been cheaper to dive into VR on the console side of things versus buying an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive for use with a PC, but it is still not a cheap endeavor. In an effort to bring more people into the fold, and as a natural progression of niche market seeing some maturation, Sony is the slashing the starting price of its PlayStation VR bundles to $299.99 in the United States and Europe. "This new pricing provides an even greater value for PlayStation fans at a perfect time, with must-play PS VR titles like Moss and Sprint Vector.... Read more...
One of the things that I have never understood are the folks who like to flip to the last page in a book and see how it ends before they read the book. I've also never understood people that want to beat a game as fast as possible. If you are a gaming fan and plan to pick up the game Far Cry 5 when it launches next week, there is a way to beat the game before it even gets started. This secret ending is super easy to enable as well; you simply have to “not” do something. That something you don’t do is place the handcuffs on the main baddy of the game, Jacob Seed. In the first... Read more...
As we reported yesterday, Fortnite cross-play is gaining a pretty large audience. Not only will Fortnite eventually have cross platform support for PC, Mac and Xbox One, but also on mobile platforms (iOS and Android). The lone hold, of course, is Sony with its popular PlayStation 4 console. Gamers would no doubt love to broaden the crop of available players to compete against by bringing the PS4 into the mix, but Sony has been reticent to such endeavors in the past. Microsoft has even reached out to Microsoft not only on Fortnite, but other cross-platform titles to no avail. “Microsoft has... Read more...
Fortnite is bringing its cartoony visuals and battle royale platforms to mobile, and specifically to iOS and Android (in that order). When it arrives on mobile, Fortnite will support cross-platform play, allowing Xbox One, PC, Mac, and mobile users to play with and against one another. What about the PlayStation 4, you ask? Cross-platform play is being introduced to the PS4 version as well, except where it matters. Sony continues to be a buzzkill when it comes to cross-platform gameplay between the PS4 and Xbox One. That is unfortunate, though par for course when it comes to Sony and Microsoft... Read more...
The gaming industry has been doing quite well in recent months, with much of that strong performance coming thanks to the Nintendo Switch which is still dominating sales. The NPD Group keeps track of the industry and according to its numbers, hardware sales doubled year-over-year for January. While Nintendo might have the hottest console out there right now, NPD says that Sony and Microsoft also benefitted from the boom in hardware spending. "Hardware spending in January 2018 grew 119 percent when compared to a year ago, to $278 million," NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. "Spending gains were driven... Read more...

Sony saw a drop in PlayStation 4 console sales during the three-month period ended December 31, the company's third-quarter of fiscal 2017. In a newly released earnings report, Sony indicated it sold 9 million PS4 consoles during the quarter, down 700,000 units from the 9.7 million PS4 consoles it sold in the same quarter a year prior. That said, the PS4 is on pace to surpass cumulative PlayStation 3 console sales this quarter. Back in October, Sony said that lifetime PS4 shipments stood at 67.5 million units. If we add the 9 million more it added during the previous quarter, then the cumulative... Read more...
Sony ended the year with a bang in regards to its PlayStation 4 console, tacking on 5.9 million unit sales during the holiday season. That strong finish propelled the PS4's lifetime sales total to a whopping 73.6 million units globally. Overall, it was one heck of a month for Sony, which just weeks before had topped 70 million in cumulative PS4 sales, more than doubling Microsoft's Xbox One lifetime shipments. Both game consoles were launched just over four years ago in November 2013 and have seen revisions since then, such as the Xbox One S and Xbox One X for Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 Slim... The PS4 is doing very well for Sony even though the standard console is a bit long in the tooth at this point. The console continues to sell robustly and analyst Lewis Ward, a researcher with IDC, says that the console will probably hit 100 million units sold in 2019. That would mean between 2018 and 2019, the console would need to sell another 30 million units. PS4 sales of an additional 30 million sounds quite reasonable. As of early December 2017, the PS4 has moved 70 million units since its global launch in late 2013. The new PS4 Pro is certainly going to be instrumental in helping to... Read more...
PlayStation 4 fans looking to set their console free from the clutches of Sony will soon have a new jailbreak to try out. The PS4 4.05 Kernel Exploit from Developer Specter has been published on GitHub for download. The jailbreak devs are specific in noting that the exploit doesn't contain any code that will defeat anti-piracy measures or allow the users to run homebrew apps. The exploit summary reads in part, "In this project you will find a full implementation of the 'namedobj' kernel exploit for the PlayStation 4 on 4.05. It will allow you to run arbitrary code as kernel, to allow... Read more...
For the current generation of game consoles, Sony has no doubt emerged as the overwhelming favorite with gamers across the globe with its PlayStation 4 family. Compared to its prime competition - the Xbox One -- it's not even close. Sony today announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 have reached 70.6 million. Sony achieved that feat in just four years; the console launched on November 15th, 2013 in the Unites States. Its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, saw sales of around 80 million units during its entire lifespan. More impressive is the fact that Sony added over 10 million sales... Read more...
