Sony has not exactly been a champion of supporting multiplayer gameplay across different platforms, otherwise known as crossplay. If there was a time and place to reverse course, it would be now, in Fortnite, the world's most popular battle royale shooter. Sony is sticking to its guns, however, drawing ire from not just gamers, but also Microsoft. Fortnite is a veritable cash cow for developer Epic Games, and part of the game's success is its availability on so many different platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. And for the most part, players on one platform can... Read more...
It seems ridiculous that in this day and age of video gaming, cross-play support isn't a standard feature across the board. Things have improved, sure, but there is still a long way to go. One of the holdouts is Sony, and if you were hoping the company would change its mind in the wake of increased pressure, you're going to be disappointed. Cross-play just isn't something Sony feels compelled to promote at this point. The reason for this is almost definitely financial, though you won't hear Sony say that directly. Instead, Sony's new chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida emphasized at IFA 2018... Read more...
Few things annoy console gamers more about cross-platform play than being forced to compete against PC gamers who are using a mouse and keyboard. The mouse and keyboard are sometimes seen as an unfair advantage to console gamers using a gamepad or other type of controller. PS4 gamers who are using a mouse and keyboard are considered to have an advantage over PS4 gamers using a DualShock controller, for instance. Xbox gamers don’t have to worry about that since there isn’t official mouse and keyboard support for the Xbox One. Regardless, Epic Games wants to keep things fair... Read more...
Sony is billing its new Cloud Remote for PS4 as being simple to use, easy to program, and a compact accessory. It is also relatively affordable for what it can do, especially compared to ultra-advanced universal remotes like the higher end stuff Logitech offers. Part of what sets the Cloud Remote for PS4 apart, however, is that it is purpose built for the PS4 ecosystem (as its name implies). "The Cloud Remote for PS4 programs your remote for you. Programming the remote is straightforward with the downloadable PDP Cloud Remote App, which uses advanced Cloud technology to auto-detect devices connected... Read more...
Up until this point, VR headsets haven't exactly taken the gaming world by storm with respect to sales. Despite the masses not yet getting on the VR bandwagon, Sony has managed to sell quite a few PlayStation VR headsets around the world thanks in part of aggressive price discounts and a bold move last Christmas to allow some PS4 owners to order up a headset with games and pay for them only if they liked it. Sony has announced that globally it has now sold over 3 million PS VR units. Along with the 3 million headsets sold, Sony has also moved 21.9 million PS VR games and experiences. To celebrate... Bethesda has its arm pulled back and is about to throat punch Sony over cross-play. Sony is the lone roadblock standing in the way of gamers everywhere playing together no matter what system they are running. In a more recent announcement, Bethesda's Fallout 76 won't have cross-play thanks to Sony. Bethesda's other upcoming game is The Elder Scrolls: Legends and word is that the company has decided to not launch the game on systems that won’t support cross-play. Bethesda's Senior VP of global marketing and communications said at Quakecon that The Elder Scrolls: Legends is a strategy... Read more...
Gamers have been looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2 for a long time now. So far, we have seen trailers, but it has been mostly cut scenes instead of actual gameplay elements. We now have a new trailer that shows us a bunch of cutscenes and mixes that in with actual gameplay footage, and the game looks epic. The slightly longer than six-minute video gives us a glimpse at most aspects of the game from the poker mini-game to schlepping your way around the open world, fighting hand-to-hand, catching fugitives, and shooting. You can easily tell what is cutscenes and what is gameplay by looking... Read more...
Razer has unveiled a new gaming controller that is aimed at gamers who like fighting games or any other game that plays best with an arcade stick on the PS4. Those switches should give the buttons better tactile feel and actuation to make your gameplay better when fractions of a second count. There are buttons on the side of the controller as well. Much to the dismay of gamers, new and old, Nintendo abruptly stopped production of its wildly popular NES Classic Edition console last year before it had a chance to satiate demand. It was an unpopular decision, one that Nintendo rectified when it brought the throwback console back to life this past June. Nintendo made the right move, as evidenced by the sales—the NES Classic was the top selling game console in June, according to tracking data release by NPD Group. That is in terms of unit sales, and it is especially notable because it is the first time an NES system has led in monthly unit... Read more...
Fans of the vast game No Man’s Sky have a new update coming next week that is called “Next”, and will bring with it some major additions to the game. The Next update also brings with it the ability to play the game in first- or third-person view. Perhaps the coolest of the new features in the update is the ability to become a fleet commander. With that ability, players can command a fleet of ships as they explore the universe. The update also... Read more...
Behold the MEGA-one video game controller mod. This thing is designed specifically to make your games more immersive by delivering heftier vibration feedback than your PS4 or Xbox One controller is capable of. In fact, the MEGA-one vibration motor is 500 times stronger than what's available in a standard DualShock or Xbox One controller. According to the ex-NASA engineer who designed the controller each bullet you fire in a shooter recoils the controller back at you. The vibration is enough to nearly pull the controller out of your hands in a driving game if you get out of control. The giant vibration... Read more...
Are we having fun yet? E3 has not been a disappointment, with many of the big names coming out and announcing new games, products, and services. Count Sony among them. Whether you are familiar with the original game or not, it's worth checking out. The trailer is primarily focused on Ellie, who is again played by actress and singer Ashley Johnson. It begins innocently enough with Ellie attending... Read more...
This is most definitely the era of the retro console with Nintendo, Atari (the Atari VCS is up for pre-order now) and others in on the retro console action. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is considering stepping into that retro console realm as well with a revival of the PlayStation One console. Word of the possibility of a retro console from Sony comes from a source that should have a very good idea of what's in the pipeline. That source is SIE president Takeshi Kodera. His translated tweet reads, "Our company is always digging up past assets, and I think there are various ways to do it.... Read more...
