Tomorrow starts a new month, which means that there will be a new crop of freebie games to download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Although it will be April 1st, there is no fooling around when it comes to what Sony has in store for gamers. Kicking things off this month on the free list is Oddworld: Soulstorm. Interestingly, while the game will be playable on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, only the PlayStation 5 version is free during April. So, if you're one of the lucky few that has been able to secure the next-gen console, enjoy it while it lasts. Oddworld: Soulstorm is a direct successor to Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty, released in 2014. The actual series dates back to 1997 with... Read more...
How big will Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it's Warzone spin-off, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ultimately get before all is said and done? Even Activision may not have a definitive answer to that question. However, the publisher did warn that the latest update could prove too bulky for some base model PlayStation 4 console owners, who may have to delete some content to make room. Activision has begun pushing out the Season Two update, and like previous ones, it requires a lot of storage space. So much, in fact, that Activision issued a warning to PS4 owners. "Those who own a standard PlayStation 4 with a default hard drive of 500GB may need to make room if they have the full versions... Read more...
Cheat codes seem to be a dying breed in today's games. Back in the day, you needed to find a friend who knew cheat codes off the top of their head or find a gaming magazine or book that listed all the cheats. Now, people can scrub through millions of lines of code looking for little backdoors and cheats that the developers left. Once such cheat code searcher, Lance McDonald, has found the final cheat left in NieR: Automata, which has been confirmed by the game's developers. Yesterday, Lance McDonald tweeted out that he had found a cheat code in NieR: Automata, which allowed the player to skip to the last ending immediately after killing the first boss. He claimed that finding the cheat code took... Read more...
The refund situation over regarding Cyberpunk 2077 is starting to get a bit murkier... at least if you bought the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Earlier this week, developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) addressed the controversy over poor performance, numerous bugs, and horrible graphics on previous generation consoles by telling customers that they could request a refund. "We'd would appreciate it if you would give us a chance, but if you are not pleased with the game on your console and don't want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy," said CDPR in a tweet on Monday. "For copies purchased digitally, please use the refund system of PSN or Xbox respectively."... Read more...
Cyberpunk 2077 may have been one of the most highly anticipated games of 2020 (if not, the most anticipated), but last week's launch was marred by a slew of bugs and performance issues across PC and console platforms. The platforms that were hardest hit, however, were the original Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which don't really have the horsepower to play Cyberpunk 2077 in its full glory. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has heard your complaints, and is going beyond its original promise to patch the hell out of the game to make it playable and actually enjoyable for the gaming masses. It posted a tweet early this morning indicating that players can now ask... Read more...
We know a few things about next-gen game consoles and graphics cards. Like, the PlayStation 5 is fire (in a good way). So is the Xbox Series X, and the same can be said of AMD's Radeon RX 6000 series and NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 30 series. All good hardware for playing Cyberpunk 2077. You know what might not be good hardware for the game? Last-gen consoles. At long last, Cyberpunk 2077 is out, bringing with it all of its graphical glory and advanced effects, like real-time ray tracing. On the right hardware, it is a visual splendor. But on older hardware—the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One—let's just say the graphics take a hit. To highlight this, users have been uploading videos and images... Read more...
Sony has made some decisions that have put off developers and gamers alike, such as the 1440p debacle earlier this month. Now, it has been found that while games are being updated to run at 120FPS on the Xbox Series X and S, the PlayStation 5 is not getting the same treatment though it is completely capable. It appears that this is due to how backwards compatible games are handled on the PlayStation, so "Play Has No Limits," unless you are a PS4 app and do not get a 120FPS update. Last week, Eurogamer’s Wesley Yin-Poole reported that Infinity Ward “quietly updated Call of Duty: Warzone to run at 120fps on Xbox Series X, but not on PS5.” Call of Duty: Warzone appears as a PS4... We’ve been hearing conflicting news about PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility over the past few months, but Sony is looking to set the records straight in a support document today. Thankfully for those gamers out there with an extensive PlayStation 4 game catalog, you’re in luck. Sony say that the vast majority of the over 4,000 games available on the PlayStation 4 are playable on the PlayStation 5. Even better is the fact that some of these games will support Game Boost technology, which will use the immense processing power of the AMD Zen 2-based CPU and Radeon RDNA 2 GPU to deliver increased FPS and smoother playback. However, backwards compatibility isn’t perfect, as you... Read more...
A multiplayer co-op mode is headed to Ghost of Tsushima for the PlayStation 4 (PS4), Darren Bridges, senior game designer for Sucker Punch Productions, announced in a blog post on Monday. It will be offered as a free download sometime this fall, with the promise of the expansion being an "entirely new experience" that does not follow Jin or the companions from his journey. The expansion is called Legends and it will focus on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima. "Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign focuses on an open world and exploring the natural beauty of the island, but Legends is haunting and fantastical, with locations and... Read more...
Sony has announced via an official PlayStation blog post that it has launched a new bug bounty program for the PlayStation 4 game console in collaboration with the security platform HackerOne. Sony says that it started the Bug Bounty program because security is a fundamental part of creating amazing experiences for the community. The program has rewards in place for various issues, including critical issues on the PS4. Those who discover a critical vulnerability for the PS4 are eligible for bounties as high as $50,000. The image below shows the range of bounties offered for issues of different types. PlayStation says that it was running this bug bounty program privately with some security researchers... Making good on its promise, developer Hello Games is bringing No Man's Sky to Xbox Game Pass on Thursday, June 11. Same goes for a Windows 10 version, which will be part of the Game Pass for PC program starting on the same day. Good stuff, though even better, Hello Games also announced crossplay support for No Man's Sky. "We are excited to be able to announce that, starting tomorrow [Thursday, June 11], PlayStation 4 players, Xbox One players, and PC players will all be able to explore, journey, survive, build, and trade together. Excitingly, No Man’s Sky is joining what is at the moment a fairly small group of games which support cross-platform multiplayer," Hello Games announced today.... Read more...
It seems Sony is not messing around with regards to backwards compatibility on its upcoming PlayStation 5 console, which is scheduled to arrive towards the end of the year (holiday 2020, so likely November or December). To ensure as few hiccups as possible, Sony has put the word out to developers that starting July 13, any new PlayStation 4 games must also work on the PS5. Backwards compatibility could be a big selling point, considering how games are available on the PS4. Initially, there was some confusion about how many existing titles would work on the PS5. During a specs reveal, Sony's Mark Cerny the company "recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we're... Read more...
Sony is gifting PlayStation 4 owners with a couple of free games, those being Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. The freebie offer is Sony's way of thanking PS4 owners for "doing their part to lessen the impact" of the COVID-19 virus by staying at home and playing video games during this time of recommended isolation. "People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID–19. We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home," Sony stated... A theme is now available for anyone who downloads the Final Fantasy VII Remake Demo before May 11. PS4 players who are also PS Plus members can get another free theme that shows Cloud looking towards the city of Midgar. Fans who like themes for their PlayStation had access to a third PS4 theme with Sephiroth as the focus. That theme was only available as a preorder bonus for players who ordered the Final Fantasy VII Remake via Amazon. Those who want all three themes will need to download the demo, join PS Plus, and to have preordered the game on Amazon. The second... Read more...
While many folks today are enjoying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale add-on, there's another member of popular franchise launching tomorrow. As confirmed by a listing found on the German-language version of the PSN, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is launching tomorrow, March 31st. According to the listing, only the Modern Warfare 2 campaign mode is included in this remastered edition. That will be somewhat disappointing for those that were expecting to see a multiplayer component, as it was included in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (which bowed four years ago).   Once we ran the listing through... Sony recently hosted a more in-depth specs reveal for its upcoming PlayStation 5 console, just as Microsoft did with its Xbox Series X, so we now have a better idea of the hardware and features that will make it tick. One question that still remained, however, is how extensive backwards compatibility would be on the PS4. We now have a better idea of that as well, and it's welcome news. When Mark Cerny took to a faux stage in a setting that looked like a Mystery Science Theater 3000 shoot, he stated that Sony "recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we're expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5." He also noted there are "more than 4,000 games... Read more...
Sony gave a deep dive into the system architecture of the PlayStation 5 yesterday, and one of the big features of the console is backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 games. Backward compatibility has been a big component of the current generation PlayStation 4, and support for older games has come for that console on a per game basis. Sony has now announced that backward compatibility for the PlayStation 5 will also rollout gradually on a per game basis. Sony executive Hideaki Nishino recently gave a status update on backwards compatibility via the official PlayStation blog, stating: Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well. We recently... Read more...
A man traveling through Portland International Airport apparently had a layover long enough that he decided to play some video games. Playing games at the airport isn't such a big deal if you're using something like a Nintendo Switch, laptop, or smartphone. Where gaming at the airport can become a big deal is if your preferred gaming platform, and the one you're traveling with in your bag, is a PlayStation 4. The man decided that he would hook his PS4 up to one of the official monitors in the terminal and get his game on. The image seen above is of the man playing Fortnite, taking over a monitor that usually displays a map of the airport. He also appears to have graciously dragged a chair over... Read more...
You can never have too many controller buttons, right? Perhaps that's the mantra over at Sony, as the company has just announced a new official accessory for the PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller.  The accessory is called the Back Button Attachment, and it adds to more programmable buttons to the -- you guessed it -- back of the DualShock 4 controller. The Back Button Attachment plugs into the bottom of the controller and provides a passthrough for the 3.5mm headphone jack. The actual buttons are more like paddles, and you have the ability to remap them on-the-fly to suit whichever game you're currently playing. Sony even allows you to store button profiles for up to three... Read more...
Sony tacked on an additional 2.8 million PlayStation 4 console sales during its second quarter for fiscal 2019 (July through September). Those sales bring the cumulative tally to 102.8 million PS4 units to date, making it more successful (in terms of units sold) than the original PlayStation, and second only to the PlayStation 2. Second place among four generations of PlayStation consoles is nothing to sneeze at—the PS2 sold 155 million units during its lifetime, a record that might never be broken at Sony. Incidentally, the PS4 not climbed to second place among Sony's own game consoles, it also edged ahead of the Nintendo Wii, which has seen 101.6 million unit sales. This achievement is... Read more...
PS4 gamers who have worn out their controllers from heavy use or from tossing the controller on the ground in a fit of gamer rage may want to listen up. eBay seller antonline is running a smoking deal on a brand new Dual Shock 4 controllers with a full warranty for $35 instead of the $60 MSRP. The listing shows that 1,877 of the controllers have been sold and calls out that the seller is an authorized Sony distributor. The only caveat is that the controller is offered in black only. Gamers wanting any of the fancy colors available from Sony will need to go to another retailer and possibly shell out full price. Antonline is a seller that most won't recognize by name, but it has... Read more...
What would an arcade fight stick be without the actual stick? Peripheral maker Razer came up with an answer—it's the Raion, a new gamepad that "brings arcade stick controls to the palm of your hand." As such, it's a fight pad, and it is designed for both the PlayStation 4 consoles and Windows PCs. Razer said it built the Raion from the ground up for fighting games. While not specifically mentioned, that translates to high profile titles like Mortal Kombat 11 and the Street Fighter series (among others). From my vantage point, the renders look a bit similar to Microsoft's Xbox One controllers, in terms of the general shape. The Raion is a different beast, though. It features a 6-button layout...
