The absolute worst time to buy a game console is right before the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales arrive in force. Pulling the trigger prematurely is a surefire way of having buyer's remorse. So, if you're in the market for a new game console, wait a few days. There are going to be discounts, including a bunch of PlayStation 4 deals, some of which Sony announced today. Starting with the core console, Sony will be serving up a new Marvel Spider-Man Standard Edition PS4 bundle for $199.99 USD ($259.99 CAN). Not to be confused with the limited edition themed bundle, this version sports a jet-black... Read more...
Sony sold more PlayStation 4 (PS4) hardware and software than it was anticipating during the company's fiscal second quarter ended September 30, 2018, and those additional sales helped catapult the Japanese electronic maker's three-month profit to just over $2.1 billion. This also prompted Sony to raise its full year forecast to $7.7 billion, up a whopping 30 percent for what it was forecasting in July. The PlayStation division, or "Games & Network Services (G&NS)" if we're being formal, led the way with nearly $5 billion in revenue, generating a profit of more than $800 million. Even more... Users with too much time on their hands recently discovered a bug in the PlayStation 4 that could be exploited to crash the console. It was easy as sending a specific and malicious message to the unsuspecting PS4 user. After receiving widespread attention, Sony has gone and fixed the bug so all is apparently good in the world of PS4 gaming again. The exploit is similar to the types of text messaging bugs that have sometimes rocked mobile platforms, essentially tripping the device up. On mobile devices, it could be anything from generally unstable behavior, like freezing, or a full crash. The latter... Read more...
PS4 gamers beware, a message is going around that will crash your console and potentially force you to perform a factory reset. Warnings on Reddit have highlighted the issue and have given PS4 gamers insight into how to protect themselves from the bug and recover if you are affected. The bug, in some instances, has been used during matches to cause the opposing team to crash and be unable to complete a match. The message received is pictured below, and the box with a question mark in it contains a null character that causes the PS4 to become unstable. Reddit users have given directions on how they... We're not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, but when it comes to cross-play support in Fortnite, Sony needs to get its story straight on why exactly it has it taken so long to finally embrace the gamer-friendly feature. Were there technical barriers that stood in the way, or weren't there? The latest comments by Sony Worldwide Chairman Shawn Layden suggest it's the latter, even though that's not what Sony said before. Layden participated in a recent PlayStation blogcast, episode 308 titled "Wooooo!" At around the 12-minute 50-second mark, Layden talked about supporting cross-play in Fortnite... Read more...
It's finally happening. Sony, a company that is not known to back down from attacks on its arcane cross-play policies, has caved to pressure and will enable PlayStation 4 gamers to play against rival consoles with Fortnite. Sony has taken flak from gamers and industry figures (including Microsoft execs). Fortnite is the most popular game in the world, and the fact that Sony has been the lone holdout has angered many gamers. What was even more infuriating is the fact that progression and items/skins bought/accumulated on the PlayStation 4 could not be transferred to the Xbox One and Nintendo... Read more...
One of the big problems that subscribers of the Sony PlayStation Now service had was that the games were only available for streaming play. That could be an issue for users on metered internet connections or with spotty internet service. Sony has announced a big change to PlayStation Now with the addition of an option that will allow users to download games to their PS4 system. That means that they will be able to play both locally and offline with the same PS Now subscription. Sony says that "almost all" of the PS4 games on the service including popular titles like Bloodborne, God of War 3 Remastered,... Read more...
Sony has not exactly been a champion of supporting multiplayer gameplay across different platforms, otherwise known as crossplay. If there was a time and place to reverse course, it would be now, in Fortnite, the world's most popular battle royale shooter. Sony is sticking to its guns, however, drawing ire from not just gamers, but also Microsoft. Fortnite is a veritable cash cow for developer Epic Games, and part of the game's success is its availability on so many different platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. And for the most part, players on one platform can... Read more...
It seems ridiculous that in this day and age of video gaming, cross-play support isn't a standard feature across the board. Things have improved, sure, but there is still a long way to go. One of the holdouts is Sony, and if you were hoping the company would change its mind in the wake of increased pressure, you're going to be disappointed. Cross-play just isn't something Sony feels compelled to promote at this point. The reason for this is almost definitely financial, though you won't hear Sony say that directly. Instead, Sony's new chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida emphasized at IFA 2018... Read more...
Sony is billing its new Cloud Remote for PS4 as being simple to use, easy to program, and a compact accessory. It is also relatively affordable for what it can do, especially compared to ultra-advanced universal remotes like the higher end stuff Logitech offers. Part of what sets the Cloud Remote for PS4 apart, however, is that it is purpose built for the PS4 ecosystem (as its name implies). "The Cloud Remote for PS4 programs your remote for you. Programming the remote is straightforward with the downloadable PDP Cloud Remote App, which uses advanced Cloud technology to auto-detect devices connected... Read more...
Much to the dismay of gamers, new and old, Nintendo abruptly stopped production of its wildly popular NES Classic Edition console last year before it had a chance to satiate demand. It was an unpopular decision, one that Nintendo rectified when it brought the throwback console back to life this past June. Nintendo made the right move, as evidenced by the sales—the NES Classic was the top selling game console in June, according to tracking data release by NPD Group. That is in terms of unit sales, and it is especially notable because it is the first time an NES system has led in monthly unit... Read more...
Sony has been come under increasing pressure due to its unflinching policy of blocking PlayStation 4 cross-play with other consoles (i.e. the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch). In the past, this policy has drawn complaints from gamers, but nothing like what we've seen with Fortnite. Gamer outrage has been immense since cross-play is not only impossible between the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, but cross-progression has also been banned.  Fortunately, it appears that Sony may be willing to cave in slightly when it comes to cross-play with the world's most popular game. Shawn Layden,... Read more...
Are we having fun yet? E3 has not been a disappointment, with many of the big names coming out and announcing new games, products, and services. Count Sony among them. Fans of The Last of Us will be interested to know that developer Naughty Dog is working on a sequel for the PlayStation 4 console, and Sony showed off a gameplay trailer that lasted nearly 12 minutes long. Whether you are familiar with the original game or not, it's worth checking out. The trailer is primarily focused on Ellie, who is again played by actress and singer Ashley Johnson. It begins innocently enough with Ellie attending... Read more...
If you want to spark an intense debate among friends (and don't care about keeping them as such), just bring up any number of controversial political topics. Or if you really want to get in a heated exchange, talk about the merits of controller design and declare your allegiance to either Sony's DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 or Microsoft's Xbox One controller. For those who prefer the latter but own a PS4, SCUF Gaming has you covered with its new and customizable Vantage, a PS4 controller that takes several design cues from Microsoft's Xbox One Elite controller. I don't mean to spark... Read more...
