There are some hot deals brewing for Apple's popular family of tablets. Retailers like Amazon and Best Buy have discounted the iPad Air by $100, and Apple is throwing in an even more compelling offer for students. The 4th generation iPad Air is priced at just $499.99 compared to its $599.99 retail price. Both Amazon and Best Buy offer the iPad Air at this new low price in its whole rainbow of colors: Green, Rose Gold, Space Gray, Silver, and Sky Blue. It should be noted that the new price is $20 lower than the previous deal one month ago. Apple's iPad tablets are the most popular on the consumer market, but that doesn't mean that development on the devices should come to a standstill. Apple's iPad mini has been around for a long time and hasn't seen any significant design updates in six years. Sure, there have been upgrades to performance and support for the Apple Pencil, but it's the same old song and dance from the outside. A new report suggests that the iPad mini will receive its most extensive makeover in history later this year. Like how the iPad Air received a dramatic redesign last year with thinner bezels, the next-generation iPad mini is rumored to get the same treatment. The slimmer bezels also mean that the long-serving... Read more...
We reported last week that some 12.9-inch iPad Pro owners have been unhappy with the device's all-new Liquid Retina XDR Mini-LED display. Mini-LED brings contrast ratio and black levels that rival OLEDs while delivering an unmatched maximum brightness of 1,600 nits. However, every technology has its downsides, and with Mini-LED, it's display blooming. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro has 5.6 million pixels but only around 2,500 dimming zones. So instead of per-pixel control over backlighting, there can be a noticeable halo effect or "blooming" around text or other light-colored images on a screen. Not all iPad Pro users have complained about blooming, and it doesn't appear that all devices exhibit the... Read more...
Apple's newfangled iPad Pro models powered by its home brewed M1 system-on-chip (SoC) can cost as much as $2,399, if opting for the flagship 12.9-inch variant with Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, 2TB of built-in storage, and 16GB of RAM. Now imagine spending all that money and then learning that developers are limited to accessing just 5GB of RAM from their apps. The newest iPad Pro models are split into two memory tiers. Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of built-in storage comes with 8GB of RAM installed, while the SKUs with 1TB and 2TB of storage wield 16GB of RAM. That is a decent amount of memory—on par with the sweet spot for a desktop PC.... Read more...
The latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro was supposed to be an engineering triumph for Apple. The iPad Pro is Apple's most powerful tablet yet, with a PC-class M1 SoC inside that's paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of internal storage. Perhaps its most ballyhooed feature, however, is its Liquid Retina XDR display. Apple has mightily boasted about the Liquid Retina XDR display, which features over 10,000 Mini LEDs grouped into 2,596 local dimming zones. This gives the display a 1,000:000:1 aspect ratio, with sustained brightness of 1,000 nits and a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits. However, that same Liquid Retina XDR display is causing some significant viewing issues for some users regarding "blooming."... Read more...
We're closing out the workweek, and just in time for the weekend fun-rush comes some excellent tech deals for those in need. Amazon is currently running some hot promotions on Apple's AirPods Pro, the current-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and the Lenovo Flex 5 2-in-1 convertible. Apple AirPods Pro The AirPods Pro are pricey, with a $249 MSRP. Luckily, the wireless earbuds regularly go on sale for much less. Such is the case today, where Amazon is selling the accessories for a low $197. That's not as low as the $190 price that we saw over the holidays, but it's pretty darn close. If you do decide to pick up the AirPods Pro, you'll receive excellent active noise cancellation, 3D spatial audio... Read more...
When Apple announced the iPad Pro earlier this week, the company gave it a significant internal upgrade with an M1 Apple Silicon processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of internal storage. The M1 is already used in devices like the Mac mini, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and even the all-new iMac. It is a potent processor offering performance comparable to recent mobile processors from Intel and AMD while drawing comparatively little power. The iPad Pro's hardware is quite capable of running macOS, so many people wonder why Apple isn't giving users the option of installing its Mac-centric operating system. "On the one hand, people say that they are in conflict with each other. That somebody has to... Read more...
Yesterday, Apple announced a refresh of its 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets. Last year's 2020 refresh was relatively minor with a slightly more powerful GPU in the A12Z Bionic processor and upgraded cameras, but Apple put more effort into the 2021 update. The new iPad Pros now feature the same M1 Apple Silicon that graces the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and the all-new iMac. The M1 SoC also means that the iPad Pro is available in 8GB and 16GB RAM configurations with up to 2TB of internal storage space. Both tablets now support Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and optional 5G wireless connectivity via a Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Finally, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro gets a stunning... Read more...
Today, Apple brought the power of its new M1 SoC to the completely redesigned iMac, and now the chip is leaping the iPad Pro. With the M1 onboard, this is now the most powerful iPad Pro ever, with a 50 percent uplift in CPU performance combined with a 40 percent boost in GPU performance. While the move from A-Series SoCs to M1 is big news, perhaps the most significant addition is a new Liquid Retina XDR Display on the 12.9-inch model. The display uses 10,000 mini-LEDs for precise local dimming, offering a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,600 nits peak brightness. Unfortunately, the new 11-inch iPad Pro is stuck with the same display technology as the previous generation model. Other features... Read more...
After Siri spilled the beans earlier this morning regarding an upcoming April 20th special event, Apple today confirmed the news. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event, called "Spring Loaded," will be prerecorded and posted on the Apple Event page for all to see next Wednesday. As usual, the event will start at 1 pm EST, and you can expect to hear from Apple CEO Tim Cook, Craig Federighi, and other Apple executives as they wax poetic about the next generation of "magical" products that will be available to consumers. Speaking of new products, here's a rundown of what could be announced next week. Fifth-Generation iPad Pros Might Adopt Mini-LED Display Tech The fourth-generation iPad... Read more...
The ongoing global chip shortage has had wide-range effects across the tech sphere. Everything from AMD Radeon RX/NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards, to Ryzen 5000 processors, to PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X/S consoles have been significantly impacted and in incredibly short supply. Even auto manufacturers have been forced to cut back production due to the inability to source critical microchips necessary for their cars and trucks. Up until this point, we haven't heard much about how the chip shortage has affected Apple. The company has soldiered on, seemingly unaffected with its iPhone sales. However, a new report from Nikkei claims that that the global chip shortage is starting to catch up with... Read more...
Microsoft launched a new ad series in January that talked up the benefits of adopting its versatile Surface Pro 7 Windows 10 convertible. In the first commercial, Microsoft painted a big red target on the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which it criticized for lacking a touch screen, its finicky Touch Bar, and its lack of gaming credentials. Well, Microsoft is back at it again with a new ad pitting the Surface Pro 7 against its more natural competitor: the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Microsoft starts right out of the gate by pointing out that the Surface Pro 7 comes with a built-in kickstand, which is a handy feature that doesn't require you to buy an additional accessory to prop it up. Next, the actor on-screen... Read more...
It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the launch of the 14th iteration of iOS, and users are just now gaining the ability to set third-party apps to launch by default (for certain actions). Android has had this feature since its inception, but we digress. Apple first announced this change at its virtual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this year. The first app to take advantage of this new feature right now in the iOS 14 beta (and by extension, the iPadOS 14 beta) is Google Chrome. The change came with the most recent version of Google Chrome which landed in the App Store yesterday, version 85.0.4183.109.  Now, when you click a link in... Read more...

The lower $669 price tag reflects a 42 percent discount off its normal $1,149 asking price. Now for those of you that may balk at the idea of getting a previous generation iPad Pro -- even at a steep discount... Read more...
Roughly two weeks ago, Apple gave us our first look at iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, which are the latest versions of the company's mobile operating systems. After iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 were announced, Apple immediately made beta 1 versions available to developers. On Tuesday, the company followed up with beta 2 for developers. When it initially announced iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, Apple said that the first public beta would be available in July, and true to its word, that time has come. Devices Eligible For The iOS 14/iPadOS 14 Public Beta These are the current devices that are eligible for the public beta (and the final release this fall). iOS 14 iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max iPhone XS iPhone... The July 4th (Independence Day) holiday is tomorrow, which means that many folks will be setting off fireworks, enjoying time with friends (socially distanced, of course), and grilling a few burgers and dogs. This weekend also represents a good time to score some discounts on tech gear, particularly if you’re heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. Apple Watch Series 3 Deals The Apple Watch Series 3 is a few years old, but it is still an incredibly popular smartwatch that Apple has decided to keep around to occupy the entry-level market. The 38mm watch typically retails for $199, but Amazon is knocking $30 off the price, bringing it down to just $169. That price is for either... Read more...
Earlier this year, Apple launched refreshed versions of its 11- and 12.9-inch flagship iPad Pro tablets. To many, however, it was a rather lackluster update that only brought a slightly faster A12Z SoC, dual cameras, and the addition of a LiDAR sensor on the back. However, if these new rumors are accurate, the iPad Pro family is set for a much more dramatic upgrade next year. If you have a 2018 iPad Pro and have been itching to upgrade, it might be worth skipping the current-generation 2020 model. First up, the long-rumored shift to Mini-LED display technology will allegedly occur next year. Mini-LEDs are expected to provide deeper blacks than traditional LCDs through the... Read more...
Apple's iPad Pro family just received a minor refresh with a slight bump in SoC performance, an additional rear camera, and LiDAR support. Long-time rival Samsung is also working on its next-generation professional tablets, and we have some fresh information on what exactly the company has in store for customers. In a new report from SamMobile, it's being reported that Samsung is developing two new Android tablets that will carry SM-T87x and SM-T97x model numbers. The former refers to new 11-inch models, while the latter refers to 12.4-inch models. This compares favorably to the iPad Pro family, which is available in both 11-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes. They also put them a step... Read more...
As far as Apple is concerned, your next computer is not a computer, it is a high-tech tablet, and specifically the new iPad Pro. Powered by an also-new 8-core A12Z Bionic system-on-chip (SoC), Apple claims its latest iPad Pro is "faster and more powerful than most Windows PC laptops." Does the bold claim stack up? Well, it's certainly a versatile tablet. "The new iPad Pro introduces advanced technologies never before available in mobile computing," said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Combining the most advanced mobile display with powerful performance, pro cameras, pro audio, the breakthrough LiDAR scanner and new Magic Keyboard with Trackpad, this... Read more...
When Apple introduced the first iPhone way back in 2007, it was a device that was very much married to a PC or Mac. You needed a computer to activate the device, perform OS updates, install music, transfer contacts, etc. However, over the years, the iPhone has grown so independent that it doesn't need a computer for much of anything at all. Well, unless you need to restore the firmware of your device in the case of a system failure, or if you want to rid yourself of beta software and get back on a "production" iOS track. Fortunately, the code sleuths over at 9to5Mac have uncovered evidence that Apple is working on over-the-air (OTA) mechanism for restoring iOS/iPadOS software/device... Read more...
Apple's iPhone 11 Pro family ushered in the era of triple-camera iOS devices, and it looks as though the company is looking to extend that functionality to its workhorse iPad Pro family. Thanks to new renders by way of OnLeaks, we're getting a look at the design of the next-generation professional tablets. From the front, not much appears to have changed compared to the current-generation 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets. That means that we're looking at a minimalist design with relatively thin bezels all around. And unlike the iPhone family, there is enough bezel available to house the Face ID hardware so that there is no unsightly notch to ruin the viewing experience. Speaking of... Read more...
Just last month, Apple out of the blue launched its 16-inch MacBook Pro flagship laptop, which includes a higher resolution display, a better keyboard, and a larger battery. However, a new research note from popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that another big update for the laptop is coming next year. Apple is said to be moving from a traditional LCD panel to Mini-LED technology, which is something that we've heard rumored for years now. However, Kuo says that the switch will happen by late 2020. The new Mini-LED displays will allegedly "significantly improve productivity and the entertainment experience", which doesn't really give us much to go on. However, a MacBook Pro with... Read more...
