Sony had hoped to capture the imaginations of gamers across the globe with its PlayStation Classic in the same way that Nintendo did with the NES Classic and SNES Classic. However, many gamers balked at the game lineup, its price tag, and emulation performance (among other things). Needless to say, within a month of launch the price of the PlayStation Classic dropped to $70, and by the end of 2018, it could be had for less than $50. Now, Sony appears to be trying to clear these consoles out with a massive fire sale at some of the nation's leading e-tailers. The going price is now a very appealing $29.99. Even with its flaws, $30 is a more than a fair price to pay for the gaming console,... Read more...
It is easy to imagine that all of the engineers and everyone else involved in Sony's PlayStation division saw the pact between Sony and Microsoft in the cloud gaming space coming. After all, the collaboration had been in the works for over a year. However, that is apparently not how it went down. The agreement between Sony and Microsoft was not just a surprise to the press and public at large, but also to most of the people involved in the development of the PlayStation console and related services. In case you missed the announcement last week, Sony and Microsoft have entered into a vague partnership on "direct-to-consumer entertainment platforms and AI solutions," one that is centered around... Sony has been rather forthcoming with details of its next generation PlayStation 5 game console and though the new system isn’t as close to reality as we would like, there’s certainly a lot of information on the AMD-powered game cosole out there that we’ve been mining and reporting recently on for passionate gamers. Let’s run down a list of what we know and see if we can paint a clearer picture of what to expect with the next generation Sony PS5. PlayStation 5 Specs And Backwards Compatibility Sony hasn't been shy about committing to what gamers can expect under the hood of the machine that some say has been running around in certain developer circles in dev kit form... Sony and its PlayStation 4 won the console wars for the current generation with higher sales numbers than Microsoft's Xbox could muster. Sony announced back in January that it has sold a total of 92 million PS4 consoles since its debut. Sony is aiming to continue its sales domination with the PS5 and has been bragging about the hardware and price point it is targeting with the next-gen device. Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will be powered by an AMD Zen 2-based Octacore Ryzen processor. Microsoft has no intentions of letting Sony get away with winning the sales crown in the next generation of the console wars and to prevent that it is beefing up the hardware inside the next-generation Xbox.... There is quite a bit of uncertainty surrounding the high-end console scene, in terms of what kind of upgrade paths Microsoft and Sony might be considering. What we've seen with the current generation of consoles is a series of incremental upgrades, like the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. That said, there are plenty of rumors pointing to true successors, namely a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett. At least one developer believes these next-generation game consoles will ship with less than 16GB of RAM. Faster hardware is a given—we fully expect next-gen consoles to come equipped with burlier graphics chips and upgraded processors, especially now that 4K resolution gaming has been thrown into the... The PlayStation Classic is the latest retro console to hit the market and is expected to sell very well this holiday season. We thought we knew everything about the little retro console with Sony detailing the full game list for the device in late October. Late last month the console was torn down and inside is 16GB of storage and a quad-core ARM processor. Players have continued to fiddle with the PlayStation Classic and have discovered a hidden menu in the console's software. The menu outlines several hidden emulation options that you can only see if you connect the right USB keyboard to the console. Not just any old USB keyboard will work according to reports, you need to connect a high-end... Read more...
Bethesda's online RPG Fallout 76 hasn't even been available for two full weeks yet, but given how much there has been to talk about, it's felt like a lot longer. That is unless, of course, you are one of the players who decided to hop into the online Fallout universe, one that is plagued with more bugs than you can shake a rifle at. As a quick recap, the game launched with a massive patch weighing in at 56GB. Days earlier, Bethesda penned a letter on its website to warn fans that the game would be buggy. This move was likely unsurprising to everyone who read it, as a buggy launch has become standard fare for Bethesda. Fallout 76 takes the number of issues to the next level and many... Read more...
We are living in the heyday of retro gaming today. You have many current (and future) options to play all of the games that defined your childhood (or adulthood) on miniature versions of the original consoles. Nintendo started the "mini console" segment with the Nintendo Classic Edition and later followed that up with the SNES Classic Edition. Sony has stepped into the retro segment with its recently announced PlayStation Classic packing 20 games and style almost identical to the original, albeit on a smaller scale. Nintendo has been good for one classic edition console per calendar year with last year's offering being the SNES Classic Edition. A new EU filing hints that Nintendo is preparing... Read more...
The era of the Playstation 2 is over. Sony Japan’s aftercare service for the PlayStation 2 is ending after 19 years of operation. Aftercare services for the system will officially end on September 7th. PlayStation 2 owners had roughly two-and-a-half months to fill out an online form to have their console repaired one last time. Those who did not register by the August 31st deadline were still able to physically send their consoles to the PlayStation Clinic service center in Japan. Any PlayStation 2’s that arrive after September 7th will not be repaired. This is most definitely the era of the retro console with Nintendo, Atari (the Atari VCS is up for pre-order now) and others in on the retro console action. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is considering stepping into that retro console realm as well with a revival of the PlayStation One console. Word of the possibility of a retro console from Sony comes from a source that should have a very good idea of what's in the pipeline. That source is SIE president Takeshi Kodera. His translated tweet reads, "Our company is always digging up past assets, and I think there are various ways to do it. There have been discussions happening (in the company) on what kind of ways there are." A revival of... Read more...
There have been rumors flying around that Sony might launch the PlayStation 5 in late 2018. If you were hoping that these rumors might add up to an unveil at E3 2018 next month, that seems less likely now. An official statement from Sony talking about what the E3 show will cover has been published and the focus will be on four games rather than hardware. Sony will have its E3 conference a month from now on June 11 at 6:00pm PST. If you aren’t going to be at the show, Sony has said it will broadcast the show live on the PlayStation website, Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook. Sony will be focusing on four anticipated game titles including Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, Ghost of Tsushima... Read more...
When Sony released its PlayStation 3 way back in 2006, it came with a large and very impressive feature list. While Sega introduced the internet to consoles with its Dreamcast in 1999, Sony brought none other than Linux to consoles with its PS3. At the time, the capability felt exciting, and in many ways, completely unexpected. Sadly, what was also completely unexpected was Sony's decision to pull the feature in 2010. The overall capabilities of what a Linux distro on PS3 could provide were pretty modest compared to what we'd expect today, but the ability to install another entire OS was fun, even if it was mostly used as a learning tool or fun project for many. Once enterprising users figured... Read more...
The wonderfully retro and incredibly rare Nintendo PlayStation has now been made fully functional. The Nintendo PlayStation did not initially include any games. Gaming and electronics freak enthusiast Ben Heck of the Youtube channel The Ben Heck Show, however, recently managed to get Super Boss Gaiden running on the console. How did Ben get the console to work? After experiencing a few initial roadblocks, Ben replaced a number of capacitors in order to get the CD ROM to work. The board contained a CD ROM controller chip, a digital signal processor, and a microprocessor. The microcontroller controlled the the CD ROM when the system is not in game mode. Ben also discovered that an SNES... Read more...
The PlayStation 4 (PS4) first launched globally in November 2013, and has gone on to become a smash hit. Sony recently revealed that it has shipped over 60 million units of the consoles since launch, and it has outsold its rival Xbox One — which launched around the same time — nearly 2:1 to date. Although Sony’s console got a sort of “mid-cycle refresh” last year with the introduction of the PlayStation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro), it looks as though we could see a true next-generation console from the company as soon as next year. That information comes from Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong. According to Thong, the PlayStation 5 will arrive during the second half of 2018. Now before... Read more...
Sony has made a rather big announcement for its PlayStation Now game streaming service. The streaming game catalog is being expanded to include PlayStation 4 games, while retaining its $19.99 per month cost. This capability will be extended to both the PlayStation 4 and Windows PCs. Gamers can currently stream PlayStation 3 games to both PlayStation 4 consoles and PCs, but this new functionality opens PlayStation Now up to more current titles. Unfortunately, there is no indication of which PlayStation 4 games will be included with PlayStation Now, but we wouldn’t count on the most recent releases being available straight out of the gate. News that PlayStation Now is expanding to support PS4 titles... Read more...
8Bitdo has announced a new accessory for the red-hot gaming console that nobody can seem to get their hands on this holiday: the Nintendo NES Classic Edition. The company is marketing its NES30 Classic Edition Set, which adds wireless controller support to the retro console via Bluetooth. The set comes with a Bluetooth adapter that plugs directly into the console, and includes the NES30, which is a wireless replica of the original NES controller. The NES30 is capable of providing you 30 hours of wireless gaming, which should be more than enough to handle your hardcore Super Mario Bros. gaming sessions. One added bonus with this particular controller is that pressing the Down and Select buttons... Read more...
Call of Duty might not be the biggest name in eSports, but its popularity is nonetheless huge and it has the potential to become even bigger. Will Infinite Warfare help that? It's really hard to say at this point, but Sony and Infinity Ward seem very keen on pushing it as hard as they can. At PlayStation Experience, which takes place on December 3rd and 4th, eight teams will compete in an invitational using Infinite Warfare. Those teams include Splyce, Team Elevate, Rise Nation, Faze Clan, Luminosity Gaming, Orbit, Renegades, and Evil Geniuses. And as you'd expect, if you can't watch the action in person, you can tune in through MLG's website or CoD's Twitch channel. This year's event is sure... Read more...
Back in the day the Sony was supposed to create a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo. The collaboration fell through and the Nintendo Playstation was relegated to the trashcan of video game history. Ben Heck recently conducted an extensive investigation of the Nintendo Playstation and recently showed viewers exactly what was inside the cancelled console. Where did someone find this video game “missing link”? Terry Diebold was a maintenance man for Advanta Corporation from 2000 to 2009. The owner of the corporation was Olaf Olafsson, the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.  It was during Olafsson's time that Sony worked to establish a relationship with Nintendo to create a peripheral... It’s been widely reported that Sony will release a more powerful variant of the PlayStation 4 console, dubbed PS4 Neo, later this year. Sony has done nothing to combat the rumors of the console as more evidence of its existence have proliferated throughout the blogosphere. Today, Sony chief executive Andrew House confirmed the development of the PS4 Neo in an interview with the Financial Times. House corroborated details that we’ve all been hearing for months, specifically that the console will have a beefier processor and graphics controller along with support for 4K gaming resolutions. As for its positioning within the PS4 family, House confirmed what we suspected all along. “It is intended... Read more...
The world of PlayStation gaming is ready to enter a new chapter. On Friday, Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment were dissolved to create a new company: Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). SIE, which is headquartered in San Mateo, California, is placing a huge emphasis on the PlayStation brand and the future of gaming. Some may see this as little more than changing the name of the company — even SIE acknowledges that “probably not a whole lot” will change at first — and perhaps some exec shuffling. However, this new transformation will allow SIE to “more quickly to meet the needs of the gaming community, innovate with digital services like PlayStation Vue and PlayStation... Read more...
One thing that can be said about Sony is that it doesn't give up without a fight. We witnessed the rise and fall of the admittedly very cool Xperia Play smartphone, which acted as both a phone and portable gaming device. Then came the company's PlayStation Mobile gaming network, which was shuttered last summer. However, is attempting to get its foot in the door once again with a new company called ForwardWorks Corporation. ForwardWorks will be 100 percent focused on mobile gaming using PlayStation IP, and while details are rather thin at the moment, we're going to see the company begin its operations on April 1st, at which point we could learn a lot more about which... If you were having trouble connecting to the PlayStation Network yesterday, you might have the hacking group Lizard Squad to thank. An hour after the group's founder posted to Twitter that "itz bouta rain packets", Sony's "Ask PlayStation" account tweeted that it was investigating connectivity issues. Lizard Squad either delivered on its promise, or is trying to reap the benefits of a major coincidence. Video games are always a hot item on big shopping days like Black Friday, so it can be expected that networks like PSN are going to get hammered simply due to the fact that so many people are trying to access the network at once. Part of the traffic surge might be from new owners trying to register... Read more...
