Ford is off to a strong start with its Mustang Mach-E. While the vehicle only has a passing resemblance to its namesake, the Mustang Mach-E brings performance and flair to the electric vehicle (EV) market. Today, the company announced that the Mach-E GT and Mach-E GT Performance Edition have sailed past their originally-projected EPA ratings ahead of their official launch. When the Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition were first announced, Ford projected an EPA-rated driving range of 250 miles and 235 miles, respectively. However, now that the vehicle's range numbers have been officially certified, the company is quoting 270 miles and 260 miles, respectively. For comparison, the endurance champ... Read more...
Ford seems to be on a roll with pickups these days, as last month it announced the F-150 Lighting, which is a full-size fully electric EV capable of traveling up to 300 miles per charge. Oh, and it starts at just under $40,000 in its base configuration. Now, Ford is ramping up its electrification efforts in trucks with the new Maverick. The Maverick is a new compact pickup that shares its platform with the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport. That means that it is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations and should have a more carlike ride. Given that it's a compact, it's also relatively short (for a pickup), coming in at just under 200 inches in length. That's enough to... Read more...
EVs currently account for a low single-digit percentage when it comes to new vehicle sales in the United States. The Biden administration wants to boost the take rate significantly by weaning Americans off gasoline- and diesel-engine cars and trucks. However, something needs to be done about the current tax credit situation, which currently penalizes automakers that were early adopters in the EV revolution. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has approved the "Clean Energy for America" bill – along party lines -- to boost the current federal EV tax credit from $7,500 to a more generous maximum of $12,500. In addition, the legislation would eliminate the current 200,000 vehicle phaseout limit... Read more...
Ford’s F-150 has been the best-selling pickup truck in the United States for the past four decades. So, it should come as no surprise that when Ford officially revealed the all-electric F-150 Lightning last night and began taking reservations, that there would be a lot of interest. Ford CEO Jim Farley said in an interview this morning that within the first 12 hours, the company accumulated a staggering 20,000 reservations for the pickup truck. “This is America’s bestselling vehicle, so if there’s one vehicle that’s going to give us an indication of whether these EVs are going to take off, it will be this Lightning,” said Farley while speaking with CNBC. While... Read more...
Ford just revealed its all-new F-150 Lightning, and it is going to make a massive splash in the full-size truck market. Tesla might have barked the loudest when it unveiled the Cybertruck over two years ago, but Ford is showing us the tangible goods with the F-150 Lightning. Ford also announced pricing and specs that are astonishing for an EV -- or any pickup truck for that matter. First of all, the F-150 Lightning doesn't look too different from the garden variety gasoline-powered version. There's a new grille up front, along with more advanced headlights and a full-length LED light bar. There's also a charging port in the driver's side front quarter panel. But if you've seen one F-150, you've... Read more...
Ford’s first all-electric pickup truck was supposed to be officially unveiled for the first time Wednesday at 9:30 pm ET. However, Ford took the opportunity to give us an early glimpse at the vehicle during President Joe Biden’s visit to the company's Rouge Truck Factory in Dearborn, Michigan. Not surprisingly, the F-150 Lightning is not a dramatic departure with respect to styling from the all-new 2021 F-150 that debuted last year. The primary difference appears to be a full-length LED lightbar that bisects the daytime running lights outlining the headlamps. There’s also a blackout grille and a slightly reshaped lower bumper. And there it is. The electric @Ford F-150 Lightning... Read more...
The Ford F-Series is the best-selling vehicle in the United States, and it's led by the rugged (and widely varied) F-150 family. The current generation F-150, which was introduced for the 2021 model year, added a hybrid variant for the first time. But Ford is ready to go all-in with electrics with the F-150 SVT Lightning. The Lightning name applied to high-performance versions of the F-150 for 1993 through 1995 and 1999 through 2004 model years for automobile aficionados. However, given its association with electricity, it should come as no sunrise that the company wants to now associate Lightning with its all-electric version of the F-150. It’s the truck of our past, and our present. On May... Read more...
Tesla is by far the most prominent and respected name in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company was a scrappy upstart with its original Roadster, and then completely revolutionized the EVs with the Model S. Tesla went onto flaunt excess with the Model X and its Falcon Wing doors, and hit mainstream gold with the Model 3, which was followed up by the Model Y. With Tesla leading the EV charts in both market and mind share, it should come as no surprise that it is often a frequent target of critics. Many of those critics are competing auto manufacturers, including Ford. Ford has a major EV release of its own for 2021, and it's called the Mustang Mach-E. The Mach-E will be going toe-to-toe... Earlier this month, a U.S. Appeals Court ruled in favor of Qualcomm following an FTC antitrust lawsuit. Qualcomm was cleared after "no evidence" of anticompetitive behavior was found, and the company's $5 billion a year licensing business was left unscathed. Now, car and tech companies are up in arms, requesting that the FTC not back down yet. In 2017, the FTC brought up a lawsuit against Qualcomm alleging antitrust law violations and anti-competitive behavior. Initially, the ruling was against Qualcomm, whereby they would have to renegotiate patent licensing agreements with the companies to which they provided parts. The 9th circuit court with a panel of judges, however, reversed this decision... Read more...
Electric vehicles sure have come a long way. Forget about the Toyota Prius or Honda Insight (an excellent car, by the way), Ford's new all-electric Mustang Mach-E 1400 is a different animal. Sure, it's from the same general family—just as domesticated kittens and lions of the wild are similar. But the Mustang Mach-E 1400 is also wildly different. Ford describes the Mach-E 1400 as a "road rocket," an apt designation, considering it harnesses the same 1,400 horsepower as the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, which incidentally is also an all-electric vehicle. In this case, all that muscle comes by way of seven (yes, SEVEN!) electric motors, with power delivery being split evenly between the front and... Read more...
After years of teases, spy shots, and internal factory images that have leaked to the press, the 2021 Ford Bronco has finally been revealed. And that means that the Jeep Wrangler, which has pretty much gone unopposed for decades, is finally get a true, apples-to-apples competitor in the mainstream rugged, go-anywhere off-roading segment. First let's get the looks out the way. This thing looks badass, taking some clear inspiration from the first-generation Bronco up front. The grille is dominated by a bold BRONCO lettering, which is flanked by round LED headlights. Moving around to the sides, we can see a horizontal character lines starting from the top of the headlights and moving rearward to... Read more...
Ford has been teasing for months about the all-new F-150 pickup. To say the F-150 is a critical model for the automaker would be an understatement. Anyone who expected a radical change from the formula that's made the truck the most popular vehicle in the country for decades running was wrong. While the all-new Ford F-150 features a new exterior design with a bolder and tougher look, it's very similar to the F-150 it replaces that truck fans loved. Not only did Ford give the pickup a new, bolder, and tougher exterior design, it also gains an all-new interior with more comfort, technology, and functionality for truck customers. The all-new interior promises new functionality and features, delivering... Read more...
The last time Ford rolled a Mustang Mach 1 off the assembly line was way back in 2004, and the next time will be in 2021. It will amount to a 17-year hiatus when the limited edition Mach 1 makes its return next year, and this time it will be touting a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 480 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm, according to Ford. As with the original Mach 1 from a decade and a half ago, the 2021 edition is intended to bridge the gap between the Mustang GT and Shelby models. Ford at one point had actually toyed with the idea of attaching the Mach 1 badge to an electric vehicle, but that became the Mach E SUV instead, paving the way for a true reincarnation. "Bold... Ford is wasting no time shifting its mindset towards electric vehicles. While the company has embraced EVs in the past with the Focus Electric, it was more of a “compliance vehicle” than something that most Americans would actually want to own. Since then, the company has announced the Mustang Mach-E crossover, which will [hopefully] go into production early next year. Now the company has revealed the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 dragster, which brings electric power to its motorsports division. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 makes Ford’s prototype Mustang Lithium, which was shown of late last year, look puny in comparison. The Mustang Lithium produced 900 horsepower and... Read more...
The current-generation Ford Mustang (pictured above), and every Mustang before it, has been rear-wheel-drive and offered some form of V8 engine. A new report is making the rounds that claims an electrified version of the Ford Mustang will debut when the next-generation car arrives in 2022. The Mustang will reportedly be offered with a hybrid V8 engine. Rumors claim that the next-generation Mustang is codenamed S650 (the current car is the S550) and will follow the template set by the current generation car with right-hand drive and left-hand drive versions. The S550 Mustang was the first Mustang in history to be produced in a right-hand-drive version from the factory and a traditional left-hand-drive... Read more...
We haven't heard much on the Ford GT front since the supercar was first revealed back in late 2015, but Ford is grabbing headlines again today with the announcement of a new special edition model for 2020. Needless to say, these are still gorgeous machines with plenty of power to take on the best that the European marques have to offer. First up is the new Liquid Carbon, which is downright menacing with its untainted carbon fiber bodywork, To us, this looks like something that Bruce Wayne wouldn't mind having in his personal collection while galivanting around the streets Gotham City – off-duty, of course. While there is no paint applied, Ford does apply a special clearcoat... Read more...
Ford officially announced its Mustang Mach-E back in mid-November as its first, all-new "from scratch" electric vehicle. Although some have balked at the Mustang name being slapped onto an electric vehicle, you can't ignore that fact that it is a generally agreeable design with a decent specs.. for an EV. Today, Ford is giving us some statistics on pre-orders for the Mach-E, and they shouldn't be too surprising. Given that early stakeholders are likely the ones that don't mind paying full sticker price and want a vehicle loaded up with options, Ford has revealed that 80 percent of U.S. customers have opted for the long-range battery when configuring the Mach-E. With the long-range... Read more...
The current-generation Ford Focus RS is a car that performance enthusiasts love. This was the car that performance fans missed the most when Ford discontinued all of its passenger cars in the United States other than the Mustang. While Americans may never see it, Focus RS fans in Europe will get a new model to enjoy, and it sounds as if the car will be a beast. The most significant change for the Focus RS is that it is expected to be a 400hp+ hybrid car. Ford is betting big on hybrid vehicles, promising electrified versions of all of its vehicles, with most of them being hybrids. Ford and Lincoln have also positioned their hybrids for performance rather than efficiency. 2019 Ford Focus ST, which... Read more...
Ford is enjoying a fair amount of buzz right now with the theatrical release of Ford v Ferrari, starring Christian Bale as Ken Miles and Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby in their battle to win 24 Hours of Le Mans. A year before all that went down, however, Ford hit the track with its first 1965 Mustang Shelby GT350 fastback coupe. For car buffs who have a nostalgic itch to scratch, Ford is now offering a limited edition Heritage Edition package for its 2020 Mustang Shelby GT 350 and GT350R models. "Looking back on it, what Ford and Carroll Shelby created back in the mid-’60s was so important to Mustang," said Jim Owens, Ford Mustang marketing manager. "With their authentic exterior livery,... Say the name Shelby, and you automatically think of hopped-up Mustangs like Ford's own 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500. Shelby American is the company founded by the late Carroll Shelby, and it also hops up Ford cars and trucks. The truck seen here is the Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport, the latest Shelby American vehicle. The slick-looking truck was initially an R&D exercise, but it is going into production. Shelby American president Gary Patterson says that the response to the R&D truck from dealers, enthusiasts, and the media was strong enough that the Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport will start production in Q1 2020. It will be a limited edition model with only 250 made, and it will cost more... Read more...
Ford went official last night with the first addition to the Ford Mustang line in 55 years. The new vehicle was previously referred to as the "Mustang-inspired EV," and it has now officially debuted as the Ford Mustang Mach-E. As with most EVs on the market today, there are several versions of the Mach-E for buyers to choose from. The most potent is the Mach-E GT Performance Edition that is targeting a 0-60 mph sprint in the mid-3-second range with an estimated 459 horsepower along with 612 lb-ft of torque. Ford is also offering the Mach-E GT that will reach 60 mph in under 4-seconds, making it faster to 60 mph than the Porsche Macan Turbo. The extended-range all-wheel-drive configuration of... Ford's first efforts with an all-electric vehicle -- the Focus Electric -- wasn't exactly a hit with the buying public. However, the company is looking improve greatly upon that compromised vehicle with the launch of it first vehicle that was designed from the ground-up to be electric. Today, that vehicle has a name: Mustang Mach-E. The Mach-E portion of the name is not surprising given previous reports, but it is interesting to see that Ford is actually using the Mustang name to market the vehicle. The Mustang Mach-E might draw inspiration from its namesake, but the Mustang name has always been applied to two-door coupes, fastbacks, and convertibles. How will the Mustang faithful react...
