Anyone who believed that TCL was only a maker of TVs could be forgiven, after all, the company does make a huge line of smart TVs with built-in Roku and other services, and many of them were on sale last month ahead of the Super Bowl. After a barrage of leaks and rumors followed by even more leaks and rumors, Samsung on Wednesday finally gave a glimpse of its fancy Galaxy smartphone with a folding display. It was our first authentic look at the upcoming handset. Samsung hid the design in a chunky case, but it did offer up some detailed specs. During the presentation, Samsung talked about having to "invent new materials" to make this phone a reality. It began with finding a malleable adhesive that would allow the company to laminate the display layers securely together while also allowing them to flex. LG has been flexing display technology for quite some time now—just look at the curved screen G Flex, which LG released five years ago, followed by the G Flex 2 in 2015. More recently, LG Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed that the South Korean electronics maker plans to the up the ante with a foldable smartphone. When will that happen? Despite recent rumors, Samsung claims that they will not be releasing a folding galaxy phone anytime soon. The Korean conglomerate stated that bendable devices would be available no earlier than 2019. Kim Tae-woong, Samsung Display’s principal engineer remarked at the Display TechSalon in Seoul, South Korea that “Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop bendable display.
