Amazon Prime Day is right around the corner, and while the usual assortment of discounts and bargains will be in full swing, Twitch Prime is planning to gift subscribers exclusive in-game Apex Legends content. This will include a unique Legend skin and weapon skin, along with three more exclusive Apex Legends skins throughout July and August. So far this year, Twitch Prime has gifted free games and in-game content worth over $2,000. Ethan Evans, executive vice president of Twitch Prime, told GamesBeat that he hopes to "eclipse last year's total" of more than $3,000 before 2019 comes to a close. "Our goal has always been to be the best deal in gaming. Being a subscriber should be a no brainer... Read more...
Another day, another report on vulnerabilities in the software that many of us use on a daily basis. This time around, researchers from Check Point and CyberInt rallied together to detail a number of exploits that they discovered in the Origin client used to deliver games to consumers. Origin is an Electronic Arts property. What makes the latest Origin exploit rather dangerous is the fact that it does not require intervention from the user with respect to handing over their logins or passcode information. In this case, the exploit allows an attacker to steal tokens associated with oAuth Single Sign-On (SSO) and TRUST routines in place with the EA Games user login process. As a result, Check... Apex Legends fans have a lot going on right now to soak in. This week dragons have turned up in the game that drop loot when shot, but some wondered how you actually kill them and what might happen if you do. A lot more is going in the Apex Legends world right now, including hints at a new Legends for players to enjoy. It wasn't long ago that a new Apex legends character was revealed called Wattson. Just recently, however, dataminers have dug up some details on the next character added to the game and rumors say it will be a character called Crypto.  Crypto is a character that is believed to have been hiding in plain sight since the game launched. Crypto was also part of the leak in March... Read more...
Confession time: I'm an avid watcher of Judge Judy. I think she's rad, and her style of mediating disputes definitely falls into the 'firm but fair' category. One of her favorite sayings is, "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining." That's also the title of her book, incidentally, and I'm reminded of it when watching Electronics Arts' Vice President of Legal, Kerry Hopkins, explain that loot boxes are actually just "surprise mechanics." According to Hopkins, Loot boxes (excuse me, surprise mechanics) are "quite ethical" too, akin to Hatchimals, the popular toy that delights kids with a plush toy hatching from a plastic egg. Or if you prefer, substitute Kinder Egg or LOL Surprise, which... Read more...
Apex Legends is an always-evolving game that continually has new content in the works to keep players happy. New content for Season 02 will land next month and will bring a new Legend called Wattson. About a month ago, a new update was teased that was going to bring with it new performance enhancements. Now something new has popped up in the game that has players excited: dragons. A video has turned up on Reddit that shows players jumping into the game to find a dragon, dubbed "flyers," circling overhead. Naturally, the player immediately runs to find a weapon and starts to shoot the dragon as it flies. We see the numbers popping up as the dragon takes damage. Eventually, the dragon drops some... Apex Legends is still a popular battle royale game that is free to play, like its Fortnite counterpart. Respawn is always updating the game and trying to fight cheaters to keep Apex Legends fun for everyone. It announced last month that it had banned 770,000 cheaters. Respawn also announced that a significant update was inbound that would bring big performance improvements. Apex Legends has now announced Season 02 with a new Legend and a new weapon. The new Legend is a female character named Wattson that looks sweet, but can be quite shocking to those who underestimate her. Wattson is a Static Defender that uses electricity to her advantage. Wattson's tactical ability is Perimeter Security, her... Read more...
Although Star War Jedi: Fallen Order was first announced back at E3 2018, we're getting our first real in-depth look at the game thanks to footage that Electronic Arts delivered today at E3 2019. As we already,Jedi: Fallen Order was developed by Respawn -- the same development studio being Titanfall and Apex Legends. The single-play Star Wars adventure centers on Cal Kestis, which managed to escape Order 66 (as portrayed in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) and is currently on the run from The Empire’s Second Sister and a band of Purge Troopers. The footage seen in the 14-minute gameplay trailer below takes place on the Wookie planet Kashyyyk, where Kestis... Read more...
In an era where many AAA gaming companies sometimes dismiss the concerns of their player base, Respawn Entertainment’s approach to communication has been a refreshing change. Since the release of their blockbuster game Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment has faithfully committed to posting regular updates and publishing new patches for the game. Respawn’s most recent patch should provide audio fixes that will be performance improvements, hit corrections and other fixes to Apex Legends. The latest patch will be available early next week. The main purpose of this particular patch is to improve the audio in Apex Legends. Overall, the audio engine should be “around 30% more... Read more...
EA launched a game subscription service back in 2014 for the Xbox One called EA Access. PS4 players at the time felt left out, but fast-forward to 2019, and EA has now announced that PS4 gamers can get in on the EA Access service starting in July. PS4 gamers will pay the same $4.99 monthly subscription fee or an $29.99 annual subscription fee for access. EA's Matt Bilbey, Executive VP and Strategic Growth says that EA's goal is to give players more chance to try and play EA games whenever and wherever they want. Other than getting access to all sorts of popular EA games for that monthly or yearly fee, subscribers also get additional perks.  EA Access also allows gamers to enjoy Play First... Read more...
Cheating is a big problem in many online games but is especially rampant in battle royale games like Apex Legends and Fortnite. EA is working very hard behind the scenes to improve Apex Legends, and part of the way it is working to improve is by catching and kicking cheaters off the game. Apex Legends dev Respawn has been working with EA Security and Fraud, the Origin teams, and developers at DICE, FIFA, and Capital Games along with Easy-Anti-Cheat to continue the cheater cleanup. The team notes that several updates have been rolled out already to stop cheats, but others will take time to implement. Respawn won't talk about all the things it is working on because it doesn't want cheat makers... Read more...
Apex Legends seemingly came out of nowhere and took the gaming scene by storm, further underscoring how insanely popular the battle royale genre is right now. Even though there was some strategic planning to generate excitement around Apex Legends when it first came out—publisher Electronic Arts paid some notable streamers to play the game at the outset—developer Respawn Entertainment says the launch still exceeded its expectations. Continued success also means a full commitment of time and resources, and so plans to hash out another Titanfall game have now taken a backseat. "Regarding other games in development at Respawn, it is important to understand that there are entirely separate... Read more...
For a Jedi on the run, the rules are rather simple: Don't stand out, accept the past, and trust no one. Instead, put your trust in the Force. Cal Kestis, one of the last surviving members of the Jedi Order after the purge of Order 66, relays these rules in the first official trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is being developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Fallen Order takes place after the events in Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. In Star Wars canon, Order 66 saw almost every Jedi executed, and many of those who survived were subsequently killed in the Great Jedi Purge that followed. It's not clear if Fallen Order will see Cal progress... Read more...
BioWare recently came under fire over a report on the studio's frenzied workplace conditions and the overall culture that negatively affected the release of certain games, most recently Anthem, and the studio's subsequent response to report, which was largely viewed as dismissive. In a follow-up letter sent to BioWare employees, however, studio boss Casey Hudson admitted that the workplace problems are real. Let's back up a moment. Anthem saw its share of bugs on launch day, one of which resulted in level 1 weapons being the most powerful in the game. It still became BioWare's second best game launch ever, though even Hudson said after the fact that "it's been a rougher launch than expected,"... Read more...
Apex Legends is extremely popular at the moment. EA and Respawn Entertainment have hit it out of the park with the game and have been focusing heavily on making it more fair, by handing out permanent hardware bans to PC cheaters and expanding the game with new content. Recent new content included a Legend called Octane, and asset leaks have hinted that the roster will continue to grow with ten new Legends in the works. A Respawn community manager called Jayfresh_Respawn on Reddit has offered up an update for PC gamers regarding crashes that have been frustrating some users in the community. The post on Reddit states that in the patch that was launched Tuesday, an improved method of capturing... Read more...
Maybe it came down to a licensing issue or perhaps publisher Electronic Arts never considered it, but I can't help but there there was a missed, golden opportunity to play Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire to the new gameplay trailer for Battlefield V's upcoming Firestorm battle royale mode. That's okay, though, because the trailer is pretty awesome in its own right. For the most part, Firestorm sticks to the tried-and-true battle royale script, though instead of a semi-invisible barrier closing in on the action, there is a literal firestorm that encompasses the map. This ring of fire shrinks the playable area like any other battle royale, forcing players into tighter confines until a single soldier... Read more...
After all the bug complaints and performance issues the plagued the launch of Anthem, it still emerged as the overall best selling game in the US last month, ahead of Jump Force (No. 2), Kingdom Hearts III (No. 3), Far Cry New Dawn (No. 4), and Red Dead Redemption II (No. 2), according to data by The NPD Group. In addition, it now officially ranks as developer BioWare's second-best launch month. Anthem was not able to topple Mass Effect 3 to claim the single-best launch month, but coming in second place is nothing to sneeze at, especially in this case—The NPD Group does not include in its numbers players who are enjoying Anthem through the EA Access Premier subscription program, or the... After weeks of speculation, we’re finally getting some concrete information on Apex Legends’ first battle pass.  Respawn Entertainment announced early this afternoon that the Season 1 battle pass – Wild Frontier -- will drop tomorrow, March 19th.  Wild Frontier will launch at 1pm EST (10am PST), and will be priced at 950 Apex Coins, or $9.50. Alternatively, you can purchase the Battle Pass Bundle for 2,800 Apex Coins, and gain access to the battle pass and instantly unlock the next 25 levels in Wild Frontier. Online multiplayer gaming is a beautiful thing, and thanks to high-speed Internet connections, it is a phenomenon that has transformed modern day gameplay. It's why battle royale shooters can exist, and be so popular. Unfortunately, cheating is a real problem, and the only ones who like a cheater are those who are profiting from them. This has created quite the headache for developers like Respawn Entertainment. Apex Legends is the hot new battle royale shooter that has attracted 50 million players in just one month. By all accounts, it is a hit franchise for publisher Electronic Arts, which stands to rake in money hand over fist the way Epic Games does with its also-popular Fortnite game. In... Read more...
Respawn Entertainment developed one of the hottest games of recent memory, that being Apex Legends, a free-to-play battle royale shooter that is presumably proving to be a lucrative franchise for publisher Electronic Arts. Popular streamers such as Tyler "Ninja" Blevins deserve a tip of the hat for hopping on board, and it appears they were paid handsomely for their time. How handsomely? According to Reuters, EA shelled out a cool million bucks (or thereabouts) for Ninja to stream Apex Legends on launch day. While that is an obscene amount of money for a day's 'work' (play), it underscores how much cash these types of games can generate through in-game purchases, and why publishers would be willing... Apex Legends has been a massive success for EA having surged to over 50 million players in a month, and the game is putting immense pressure on its battle royale rival, Fortnite. A leak earlier this week claimed that a new character was coming to the game called Octane. And another fresh leak via Origin, the EA game store, has given weight to that previous rumor with the same original art for the Octane character on the landing page. The Origin leak didn't tip a specific launch date for Octane, or the associated Season 1 Battle Pass for the game. However, if the landing page is being tweaked and readied, the launch must be close. Some expected that the battle pass would land yesterday, March... Read more...
Apex Legends has stormed onto the scene and asserted itself as a hugely popular battle royale shooter, hitting 1 million players in just 8 hours after launch, and leaping to 50 million players in its first month. Inevitable leaks come with that level of popularity, and as such, the names of potentially 10 upcoming character additions might now be known. It was already leaked last month that developer Respawn Entertainment would be adding new legends to the game, eight in all. Now, however, a list of player cards has attached names to those upcoming characters, along with two others that were not previously known. That brings the total number so far up to 10 new characters. The names include Rampart,... Read more...
The launch of Anthem, the latest offering from BioWare and EA, has been anything but smooth. Players have complained that the game is riddled with bugs and is crashing their consoles. Anthem thankfully recently released a massive patch that removes respawn restrictions, fixes the loot system, and improves the overall stability of the game. Anthem’s Patch 1.0.3 is rather extensive. First and foremost, the patch has “improved stability for all platforms”. The game had previously been crashing both Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles. BioWare's head of live service, Chad Robertson, noted that they had discovered a bug that would shut consoles down as if the power plug had been... Read more...
