Earlier this week, Samsung announced their new 2019 lineup of 4K and 8K televisions using a display technology they call QLED. The term QLED looks suspiciously like OLED, but do the two technologies actually have much in common? After fielding a few questions about this on our website and social media, we want to clear up any confusion between them and expound on what to expect in terms of picture quality from each. We will start at the beginning with a basic LED LCD display. Virtually everyone has encountered one of these displays at some point in their life as they make up the majority of the market. These use a white LED backlight to shine through tiny red, green, and blue filters to create... Read more...
If you’re sick and tired of hearing about the Samsung Galaxy S10, here’s an Android device of a different flavor that will also be announced later this month. We now have some official renders of the production version of the LG G8 ThinQ smartphone.  The images come courtesy of everyone’s favorite gadget leaker, Evan Blass. We see the smartphone from every angle, and we can discern that the smartphone still features a notch in the top-center of the display. This is a rather interesting design choice as the large notch is “so 2018”, as many Android OEMs – including South Korean rival Samsung – are moving to punch hole displays in 2019. Housed... LG is gearing up for a big MWC 2019 showing and is already teasing its flagship device that will be unveiled at the show. LG has in the past teased a device using a Snapdragon 855 SoC and packing a 5G modem for the show, but it's unclear if that device is the G8 ThinQ. LG has now announced that it has teamed up with Infineon and that the LG G8 ThinQ to be unveiled at the show will pack the new Infineon REAL3 Time-of-Flight (ToF) image sensor chip. LG says that the new sensor is going to play a critical role in the front-facing camera of the G8 ThinQ smartphone. The sensor builds on the combined skills of Infineon and pmdtechnolgoies in algorithms for processed 3D point clouds. A point cloud is... Read more...
In a report yesterday, we told you that LG is looking to say goodbye to touch as it embraces gesture controls in its upcoming smartphones. Today, LG is giving even more insight into what it will be showing off at MWC 2019, which is being held in Barcelona, Spain next month. LG says that its newest flagship will sport Qualcomm's brand new 7nm Snapdragon 855 SoC, which will be all the rage for devices launching this year. In addition, the smartphone will feature 5G connectivity, likely made possible by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem. If that wasn't enough, LG also said that it will fit the new flagship with a massive 4,000 mAh battery. For reference, the current LG V40 ThinQ with... Read more...
In just a few weeks, this year's annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) will be upon us, and we are expecting several product announcements. Ahead of the event, LG is interestingly teasing gesture controls as it quite literally waves goodbye to touch in a short video. LG also says we are going to be "stunned." "Are you prepared to get stunned by the LG Premier at the MWC 2019? Stay tuned!," the video's description reads. LG also links to its LG Mobile Facebook page and Instagram account, though neither one offers up any additional information. If you want to be one of the first to know what's going on, though, it would be worth following one or the other. One thing that is interesting about the teaser... Read more...
As smartphone fans wait in anticipation for Samsung to roll out its folding screen Galaxy F, LG is cooking up something a bit different that will still give smartphone users more screen space. A rumor is going around that LG is set to launch a new smartphone that has an option to have a second screen attachment. The rumor comes from a person who claims to be familiar with LG's plans. The source describes the second screen attachment as a sort of case with a screen that could double the size of the smartphone's display. The name of the device hasn't been finalized according to the source, but it will be decided soon as the source says that it is one of the multiple devices that LG is launching... Read more...
Football fans know that the biggest game of the year is right around the corner. Many fans are looking to get a bigger screen in their living room to enjoy the game, and TV makers are offering up big discounts. Yesterday we mentioned a big sale on TCL 4K Roku smart TVs over at Amazon. If you have the budget for something fancier, LG has announced significant price cuts on its B8 series OLED TV models that offer up to $1,000 off the normal retail price. LG is offering two models with big discounts, the 55-inch B8 initially sold for $2,299.99 and with the discount for the big game the TV can be had for $1,499.99. If you want a larger screen, the 65-inch B8 that initially sold for $3,299.99 is now... Read more...

LG promises that the new range of TVs will offer a higher level of AI picture and sound quality experience than previous TVs. The series of TVs also support the LG open smart platform, and the sets will... Read more...
With Christmas over and 2019 only days away, it's time for gadget and tech fans to start looking forward to CES 2019, which is kicking off early next month. Companies are already beginning to tease the wares they will be unveiling and LG has stepped to tease the soundbars that will be on display at the show. The new soundbars are made under an LG collaboration with Meridian Audio, a company who was a pioneer in High-Resolution Audio. The soundbars promise to integrate smart functionality, sleek and modern designs, and multi-dimensional sound to fill every corner of the room; the sound bars are also equipped with AI. Three soundbar models will be on display at CES 2019 including the... Read more...
LG is planning to introduce a couple of interesting 'UltraGear' monitors at the Consumer Electronics Show next month. One is a 49-inch model (49WL95C) that is intended for productivity, and the other is a 38-inch model (38GL950G) that is designed primarily for gaming, with appropriate bells and whistles like G-Sync support. The 38-inch monitor sports a curved panel with a 3840x1600 (WQHD+) resolution and 144Hz refresh rate for fast-action gaming. LG also claims a low response time of just 2 milliseconds. Lighter weight esports titles are probably best suited, otherwise you'll need a meaty graphics card to take full advantage of the refresh rate at 3840x1600. Anyone who owns a GeForce graphics... Big screen televisions are fairly common now, and even though they have slimmed down considerably since the days of rear projection TVs, they can still take up a lot of space in the living room. LG is attempting to make them less of a dominating presence. How so? The company apparently has plans to launch a 65-inch rollable OLED TV sometime next year. LG actually showed this off at the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of 2018. At the time, LG said its rollable TV highlighted the "distinctive technological edges and unlimited potential of OLEDs." While a bit hyperbolic (and it seems something may have been lost in translation), it's an interesting concept all the same. "It can be rolled... Read more...
If you are running an AMD Radeon graphics card and want a high-resolution monitor that supports FreeSync, LG has a new offering that won't break the bank called the 32QK500-W. This is a 32-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) LED IPS monitor with a 75Hz refresh rate. It covers 72% of the NTSC color gamut (approximately 100% sRGB coverage) and supports 1.07 billion colors. The monitor offers a 16:9 aspect ratio and has a brightness rating of 250cd/m2 minimum and 300cd/m2 typical. The contrast ratio is 700:1 minimum and 1000:1 typical with viewing angles of 178-degrees in all directions. LG lists the GtG response time at 8ms and pixel pitch is 0.2727 x 0.2727mm. LG fitted the display with a pair of HDMI... Read more...
Last week, we brought you leaked details of the LG Gram 17 ultrabook that manages to weigh in at an unbelievably light (for its size) 2.95 pounds. Today, LG officially confirmed that notebook and announced another: the LG Gram 2-in-1. The Gram 2-in-1 is dominated by its 14-inch display, which has a Full HD resolution (1920x1080). The IPS touch display is covered in Gorilla Glass 5 for added strength/protection and features a 360-degree hinge. More importantly, the Gram 2-in-1 only weighs 2.5 pounds which makes it a boon for mobile warriors. Powering the convertible is an unspecified Intel 8th generation Core processor. But for reference, the Gram 17 uses a Whiskey Lake-based Core... Read more...
When it comes to the ultra-portable market, it's quite easy to find 13-inch notebooks that weigh in at less than three pounds. They're seemingly a dime a dozen, with Apple having most recently launched its all-new 13-inch MacBook Air weighing in at 2.75 pounds. But sub-3-pound notebooks are mere child's play for LG.  The company's upcoming Gram notebook just leaked via Best Buy, and it manages to include a massive 17-inch display within a chassis that weighs less than 3 pounds. Yes, you just read that correctly. According to the listed specs, the 17-inch Gram weighs in at a feathery -- for its class -- 2.95 pounds and is just 0.7-inches thick. Despite its lightweight design, LG... Read more...
A relatively recent trend in the smartphone space is to implement dual cameras on the backside of the handset, which enables some nifty depth-of-field effects through hardware (rather than software alone). Some phones even wield four rear cameras, like Huawei's Mate 20 Pro. Well, LG apparently has aspirations of boasting the most cameras on a single phone, with a patent filing pointing to four times as many rear camera sensors as the Mate 20 Pro. That's right, LG filed a patent that discusses a 16-camera arrangement, which would be the most ever on a smartphone if it comes to fruition. How can there possibly be room for that many camera sensors? The answer is in the insect-like design. They're... Read more...
For a period of time, smartphone makers competed with each other by releasing increasingly bigger handsets. More recently, the focus has shifted to full-front displays, and how to implement (or avoid) the notch that Apple popularized with its iPhone X. Looking ahead, folding phones might be the next frontier, and LG is planning to participate. LG Flex 2 To what extent, we don't know yet. Back in early October, LG Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed that the company is working to deliver a folding smartphone to the public, joining companies like Samsung and Huawei, which are both attempting to capitalize on what they hope will be a new trend. LG's mobile boss said his company is in no rush to... Read more...
LG has been flexing display technology for quite some time now—just look at the curved screen G Flex, which LG released five years ago, followed by the G Flex 2 in 2015. More recently, LG Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed that the South Korean electronics maker plans to the up the ante with a foldable smartphone. When will that happen? According to Evan Blass, a prominent leaker who goes by @evleaks on Twitter, it will debut at the Consumer Electronics Shows in January. LG Flex 2 That is right around the corner, with the annual event kicking off in a little over two months in Las Vegas. It's not clear when LG might actually launch a foldable phone to retail, as a lot of the products... Read more...
The next big battle in the smartphone world is shaping up to be which manufacturer is first to market with a smartphone that folds. Samsung was first to start talking about a device with a folding screen and has promised that the folding screen device will launch by the end of 2018. Samsung has said that the big benefit of this folding screen smartphone would be a device with a tablet-like screen in an easily pocketable form factor. The catch is that the price of Samsung's device is expected to be high due to limited screen suppliers. A person allegedly familiar with Huawei's plans claims it isn’t going to sit back and let Samsung be first to market; that person claims Huawei wants to beat... Read more...
At the start of the month we were able to get our mitts on the slick new LG V40 ThinQ smartphone and put it through its paces; we found the smartphone to be a good device and recommended it with one of the biggest downsides being its $949 price tag. If you read that review and liked what you saw but were hesitant about the price, B&H has a deal that you might not want to pass up. B&H has a preorder special for the V40 ThinQ 64GB smartphone that offers $200 in instant savings. That means rather than shelling out $949.99, the smartphone will cost you $749.99 making it much more palatable. To sweeten the deal even further, B&H is also throwing in a second-year warranty (the LG Second... Read more...
Smartphone makers seem intent on finding out exactly how much money they can get away with charging for their flagship phones, with several models now topping the $1,000 mark. Traditionally, wireless carriers would let customers spread the cost over a period of 12 or 24 months. T-Mobile is taking things a step further, however, with a with new 36-month installment plan. Being able to break up payments for a pricey smartphone over the course of three years can translate into a lower monthly phone bill. Buyers obviously aren't saving anything in the long run—a $1,000 smartphone is still $1,000, whether it's paid for right away, in a year, in two years, or even three years—but the smaller... LG is a company with a history of flexible display panels, as witnessed by the G Flex in 2013, which was then followed up by the G Flex 2 in 2015. While those smartphones had a fixed curve in the display, the company has confirmed plans to produce a true folding smartphone with a flexible display. While speaking at a news conference regarding the launch of the V40 ThinQ -- read the HotHardware review here -- LG Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed that the company is working to deliver a folding smartphone to the public. LG would join companies like Samsung and Huawei which are both rushing to bring the first such product to market. However, LG says that it is in no... Read more...
