A week ago, we were able to give you a quick look at the performance of Intel's new 10th generation Core processors based on the 10nm process node. These processors have been a long time coming, as Intel has been overly reliant on its 14nm process node as it worked to overcome engineering challenges at 10nm. Back in May, Intel disclosed a number of details regarding its next-generation 10nm Ice Lake architecture and Project Athena. The latter is an innovation program Intel kicked-off in collaboration with key industry partners that’s meant to usher in a new breed of advanced laptop designs and mobile devices. Yesterday morning, we got our hands on some leaked benchmarks for Intel’s upcoming Core i7-1065 G7 processor. This is a 10nm Ice Lake-U part that features a total of four cores (8 threads), a base clock of 1.3GHz, an all-core boost clock of 3.5GHz, a single-core boost of 3.9GHz, and a max TDP of 15 watts. To go along with the PassMark benches that we reported on in that article, we also provided Geekbench scores dated May 28th of a Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 convertible. Intel and AMD have been at war with one another for several years, in the CPU performance and benchmarking space, though only recently have things become interesting. AMD's Zen architecture, now on its third generation (Zen 2), has made AMD a formidable opponent at all three performance tiers—entry-level, mid-range, and high-end. Has Intel conceded the crown? That's a loaded question, and the answer really depends on a variety of factors, including which particular processor and market segment are being examined. AMD has been garnering a lot of the spotlight in the PC community since Computex 2019 with its Ryzen 3000 unveil and it has been showcasing plenty of benchmarks where it dominates the Core competition from Intel. Apparently, Intel has had enough because the company is snapping back in its strongest language to date over AMD's 7nm Zen 2 CPU prowess. While speaking with PCGamesN, Intel VP Jon Carvill called out AMD's reliance on synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench R15/R20 and Geekbench to prove its superiority. We've all been waiting a long time for 10nm Ice Lake processors to arrive, and Intel is finally ready to deliver after sticking with the 14nm process node (albeit with refinements along the way) for four years. Everyone of course is eager to hear about the performance of the first Ice Lake processors (which will initially be available with up to four cores) and what kind of gains they will bring with respect to power efficiency, but what's equally exciting is the integrated graphics. It's finally here folks, the first crop of devices rocking Intel's 10nm Ice Lake-U processors have been announced. And one of the first OEMs out of the gate is Dell, which is launching the XPS 13 7300 Series 2-in-1 convertible. Over the last few months, Intel has disclosed a number of details regarding its next-generation 10nm processors, codenamed Ice Lake. For Intel, the road to 10 nanometers has not been a smooth or easy one. That is why we are still waiting on volume shipments of 10nm CPU products, even though the original plan was to already be at this point a long time ago. So, where are things now? According to the latest update from Intel, volume 10nm CPU shipments will finally commence next month. Intel will kick off its volume 10nm play in mobile, with its Ice Lake platform. The new chips will start shipping in June, bringing with them "approximately 3 times faster wireless speeds, 2 times faster video transcode speeds, 2 times faster graphics performance, and 2.5 to 3 times faster artificial intelligence performance" compared to past generation... We have been waiting a long time for Intel to finally ship its 10-nanometer processors in volume, and barring any last minute hiccups, the company is still on track to do that this holiday season. During a conference call with reporters, Intel CEO Bob Swan doubled down on his company's commitment to 10nm, and said confidence in the shrunken process node "is also improving." After years of delays, Intel is ready to put the pedal to metal with its 10nm computing products. Although it's been on Intel's roadmap for quite some time, Intel's first-generation 10nm platform, codenamed Ice Lake, is currently still tracking for a holiday 2019 launch for thin and light notebooks and 2-in-1 convertibles. Intel has been put through the ringer recently due to the numerous delays facing its 10nm process node, and with good reason given how long the company has milked the 14nm node. Just yesterday, the company was forced to issue a public statement (via Twitter) to refute a report claiming that the company had abandoned its 10nm process technology altogether. Despite all the drama, there are 10nm Intel Core processors already making the rounds, including the Cannon Lake based Core i3-8121U, which has its integrated GPU disabled. Back in late July, Intel confirmed what many of us feared would be the case -- its first fully-functional 10nm chips won't be shipping until late 2019 for consumer systems, which is over a year from now. At the time, Intel didn't give us any indication about when 10nm tech would start filtering down to its workstation- and server-grade Xeon processors. That is all changing today, as the company announced plans at its Data-Centric Innovation Summit for the next two years with regards to its Xeon Scalable processor family. Intel's next Xeon server platform is called Cascade Lake, and it looms just around the corner. After that, however, Intel will launch its 10nm Ice Lake chips. Details on Ice Lake have been pretty sparse up to this point, though some key details about the platform has been revealed by Power Stamp Alliance, which tasks itself with creating collaborative solutions for 48V-to-low-voltage on-boad isolated and non-isolated DC-DC power converters, and its members such as Bel Power Solutions.
