Those specific tensions have been settled over the past year, but there is still bad blood between the two companies lurking under the surface. A new report from Protocol indicates that Google is currently holding back the growth potential of Fire TV Edition smart TVs due to contractual agreements that it has entered into with its Android TV partners. The cool part about that feature is that it uses the customer's existing hardware and doesn't require them to purchase additional TiVo set-top boxes, like the recently announced Bolt, or the currently available TiVo Mini. TiVo has stated that it expects to launch the apps during Q2 and Q3 of 2019. The first app to launch will be for Fire TV users, the Roku app will come next, with the Apple TV app being last. When it comes to Amazon's Fire TV family of media streamers, the Fire TV Cube is the flagship of the family. However, it also comes with a price tag of $119.99. Today, however, HSN is selling the Fire TV Cube for a much more enticing $59.99, which is half off its normal selling price. That's also only $10 more than the brand-new Fire TV Stick 4K, which is far less capable.  Besides including Alexa functionality for controlling your smart home devices, it is also capable of controlling your A/V equipment (i.e. receivers, sound bars and cable/satellite boxes) with just your voice. Amazon also includes an Ethernet adapter and an IR extender in the box. About the only... Read more...
Here's my bold, and maybe biased prediction: Red Sox are going to the World Series, Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl, Celtics are a lock for the NBA Finals, and the Bruins will compete for the Stanley Cup. If you're a diehard Boston sports fan like myself and want to catch all the glory on something bigger and better than 32-inch TV, you can upsize your viewing experience at Amazon today with a snazzy deal on a Toshiba 50-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart TV for $349.99. That's a good deal even if you hate Boston sports (unthinkable!). This is one of Amazon's Fire TV Edition models too, which means the Fire TV experience is built into the set for streaming goodness. It comes with a Voice Remote with... Read more...
Amazon has made it so that users of the Amazon Fire TV with the pendant design can no longer use the official Amazon Fire TV Game Controller. The controller is incompatible with the Fire TV device after the latest 6.2.5.3 software update for the third-generation device is applied. Scuttlebutt suggests that the Fire TV Cube will also soon lose support for the gamepad. This move wasn't an accident with a new disclaimer at the bottom of the page for the Fire TV Game Controller that reads "not compatible with Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD - Pendant Design, Fire TV Edition smart TVs, or Fire TV Cube." That leaves the only device that is compatible with the Fire TV Game Controller as the Fire TV Stick.... Read more...
Best Buy and Amazon are fierce rivals in the electronics market, with the former having a big presence in the brick and mortar side of things, while the latter absolutely dominates the online sector. The two companies are now joining forces to sell new Fire TV Edition smart TVs in a rather interesting arrangement. The two companies inked a multi-year partnership that will see Best Buy as the exclusive retailer for Insignia- and Toshiba-branded Fire TV Edition smart TVs. These sets will be sold at both Best Buy's brick and mortar and online stores. In addition, the TVs will be sold via the Amazon Marketplace with Best Buy as the third-party seller. There will be nearly a dozen Fire TV Edition... Read more...
If you're an Amazon Fire TV owner, it looks as though your access to the native YouTube client is coming to an end sooner than expected. Google originally stated that access to the app would be removed from Fire TV and Echo Show devices on January 1st 2018, which is next Monday. However, customers are reporting that access was revoked today. Customers who attempt to access the YouTube app are greeted with a message that redirects them to YouTube.com either through Amazon's own Silk browser or Mozilla's newly installed Firefox browser for the Fire TV. In a statement sent to the press today, an Amazon spokesperson added, “I can confirm that YouTube and millions of other websites are accessible... Read more...
Another holiday season has come and gone, though not before Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer, hit a new shopping record. That seems par for course these days, which itself is pretty remarkable. The holiday season was also a boon for Amazon's Prime membership program. More than 4 million started a Prime trial or paid membership in just one hectic week of holiday shopping. The massive influx of Prime memberships (trial and paid combined) during the past week is proof positive that free two-day shipping on millions of qualifying items continues to be a major draw, though far from the only one. Prime membership has many perks these days, from unlimited streaming of Amazon's catalogs of... Read more...
Amazon has announced that users of the Fire TV devices can now surf the web on their TVs thanks to the addition of Firefox and Silk web browsers. The move is yet another way to give Fire TV users access to YouTube while Amazon and Google are still fighting it out in public. The YouTube app was pulled from the Fire TV and Echo Show, then returned, and then was pulled again. Amazon is said to be considering its own YouTube rival in the wake of the spat. Along with giving access to YouTube -- something that Amazon deftly avoids mentioning in its press release about the feature -- users will also be able to access other sites like Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, and Reddit. All Amazon says about gaining... Read more...
