Do you know what is better than paying for a fun game? Getting it for free, of course! And no, we are not talking about theft of any sort. Say what you will about the Epic Games Store, one thing we like is it frequently serves up free games, some better than others. The one that is being gifted right now is Wargame: Red Dragon, a great real-time strategy (RTS) title. Wargame: Red Dragon came out back in 2014, and actually was going to be a freebie at the Epic Games Store last November. However, Epic announced at the last minute that its release on the storefront had been "temporarily delayed," with Dungeons 3 replacing it as the free title. Now three months later, it is available to claim at... Read more...
If you ended up skipping Rage 2 when it released last year, now is your chance to add it to your game library at no cost, rather than fork over $59.99 for the title. That's because it is free in the Epic Games Store right now. It is one of two free games up for grabs, and is available at no cost until 11:00am on Thursday, February 25. Say what you will about the Epic Games Store and whether or not exclusives are a good thing. Whatever your feeling, the constant influx of free games is a big draw. Some are bigger draws than others, naturally. Rage 2, for example, is perhaps not the smash hit developers id Software and Avalanche Studios (or publisher Bethesda) hoped it would be. However, it's hard... Read more...
Back in late December, Metro: Last Light Redux was offered up as a free game download from the GOG Store. It was only available for 48 hours, so if you weren't quick enough, it's quite possible that you missed out on that hot deal. Thankfully, the Epic Games Store is giving you a second chance to grab Metro: Last Light Redux for the low, low price of free. As we talked about before, Metro: Last Light Redux is a post-apocalyptic shooter set in Moscow during the year 2034. The game was originally released in mid-2015, but it still provides an exciting and immersive gaming experience. You'll be able to game along at 60fps, and the Redux version includes all previously-released downloadable... Read more...
Who doesn't like getting something for nothing? Sure, some things are so terrible that you might have a hard time even giving them away, but Star Wars Battlefront II: Celebration Edition is genuinely good these days, and also free right now at the Epic Games Store. The only problem is, so many people flocked to claim their copy that Electronic Arts is having a hard time accommodating them all. Star Wars Battlefront II features both single-player and multi-player gameplay. Those who want to partake in the single-player campaign can hop right in and play the game without issue. However, the multi-player action has been overwhelming EA's servers, apparently, causing players to report seeing server... Read more...
Last week, it was discovered that the Epic Games Launcher was unnecessarily consuming CPU resources, which also resulted in unwanted temperature spikes, even when systems were idle and not updating a game. In addition, as we reported, it was also noted that the Epic Games Launcher app was sending a fair amount of traffic from host machines to multiple servers, again, even when the app was idle. However, it seems that at least one engineer on the development team at Epic is now aware of the issue and the company intends to release a fix soon. In the end, it appears that we are just witnessing a bug with the launcher, though we will definitely know more soon. The director of publishing strategy... Read more...
Deck the hardrive with loads of games Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la All of which are free to claim Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la I like this song tradition Paul started when the 15 days of free game giveaways on the Epic Games launcher was announced. Anyhow, I digress. Today is a new day, and Epic Games has another free game to give to people who simply log in to the Epic launcher and claim it. Until tomorrow at 11 AM EST, gamers can grab Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty for the low price of free or pick up some other games on sale too. Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is a game released in 2014 from the developer Just Add Water. This free game is tagged as a puzzle, platformer, and action... Read more...
Sing it with me now—On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a gift card to an online games store and it was awesome! Okay, maybe the lyrics do not actually go that way, but if you are a gamer, this is what you want for the holiday season, free games! That and maybe a fancy new graphics card, but let's not go there. As it applies to free games, Epic Games is going to deliver in, um, epic fashion with 15 days of freebies, and it starts right now. There is a leaked list going around claiming that the first free game is Dying Light, followed by Resident Evil 7, The Witcher 3, and a bunch of other high profile games (Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter World, and so forth). But it is probably... Read more...
Developers are making a big deal about "next-gen gaming," in large part because the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 are about to hit. Likewise, on PC we have new graphics card launches from AMD (Radeon RX 6000 series) and NVIDIA (GeForce RTX 30 series). One of the upcoming games that will attempt to make use of next-gen GPU goodness is Godfall, and the system requirements have been revealed. Godfall is based on Unreal Engine 4 running on the DirectX 12 Ultimate API, which it means it takes advantage of cutting edge graphics technologies like real-time ray tracing and variable rate shading. The better your hardware (and especially your GPU), the better the game will look, depending on the settings... Read more...
Have you ever wanted to be the master of your own theme park for free? Now you can, as the new RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Complete Edition is available for free to keep on the Epic Games store. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is the modern update to the classic from years past. Parks can be designed with more than “300 coasters and rides, 500 scenery pieces, 60 shops and services, and 20 animals to rear and raise.” Players can also ride on the coasters with the “signature” coaster cam. Furthermore, if you get the Complete Edition, you get the content from the Soaked! And Wild! expansion packs. Also, in the shadow of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 launching, it is amusing to say that... Read more...
It looks like Crytek is attempting to kill one of the longest running jokes on PC, that being whether or not something can run Crysis. While a bit stale at this point, Crysis Remastered had the potential to revive the gag. But if the newly published minimum and recommended system requirements are anything to go by, the answer is yes, your PC probably can run Crysis Remastered. It has been more than a decade since Crysis came out, and more than seven years since the latest installment, Crysis 3. Crysis Remastered is exactly as the name implies—a remastered version of the original game with updated graphics and optimizations for modern hardware. And if you own a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon... Read more...
The Epic Games Store has kicked off its Summer Sale event with deep discounts on a variety of games, including "scorching offers" of up to 85 percent off various titles and add-on content. And of course the usual rotation of weekly free games is in effect, so if for no other reason, it's worth diving in to collect the freebies. On tap for this week are Next Up Hero and Tacoma, both of which are free to claim until July 30. Those titles normally sell for $19.99. Then starting on July 30, you can claim three more games for free, including 20XX, Barony, and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. Control - $29.99 (save 50 percent) at Epic Games Store As for the discounted games that are part of... Read more...
If you are looking for something to keep you busy this weekend (and beyond), head over to the Epic Games Store and nab yourself a copy of Torchlight II by Runic Games. It is the latest free title, and normally sells for $19.99. While it is a bit dated at this point, the action role-playing dungeon crawler is still a fun game, particularly if you are into the Diablo-style of gameplay. Not by coincidence, Runic Games was co-founded by Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, the same team who co-founded Blizzard North, creators of Diablo. Unfortunately, Runic Games was shuttered in 2017 (Max had left the studio in 2016), though both Torchlight and Torchlight II remain available and playable, the latter... Read more...
For most PC gamers, the place they prefer to get their video games is Steam. When the Epic Games Store first opened, many PC gamers were upset that Epic landed some high-profile exclusive titles forcing them to have games across more than one digital service. Feelings towards the Epic Games Store have changed for many, with the store offering some very cool games at no cost since it opened. Today, the latest Epic Games Store free games for July have been announced. The first of the three free games is Killing Floor 2. Many will be familiar with the game, but for those who aren't, we will run down the premise of the game. Killing Floor 2 sees players in continental Europe after it's overrun by... Read more...
One of the cooler looking PC games that has been teased in recent months is Horizon Zero Dawn, and it is currently up for pre-order on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The official launch date for the game has been confirmed for August 7.  Horizon Zero Dawn was initially released as an exclusive on the PlayStation 4 game system, and with the PC Port launch date confirmation also came with a trailer that shows beautiful graphics and a bit of the gameplay. The trailer shows that the port will feature unlocked framerates, dynamic foliage, controller mapping, improved reflections, and benchmarking tools. PC gamers also get support for ultrawide resolutions and more. Horizon Zero Dawn Complete... Read more...
Many establishments are still closed to the public, and it is still a good idea to keep yourself in isolation anyway. Not to worry, though—being stuck in quarantine due to the Coronavirus is a great excuse to fire up that backlog of games you have been meaning to play. And if you want to add more titles to your catalog, you can snag Ark: Survival Evolved and Hitman Absolution for free right now. Ark: Survival Evolved normally runs $49.99, so getting it for at no cost is quite the bargain. It is available at the Epic Games Store, and completes what turned out to be an accurate leak of major free titles that were tipped to be free at various points, starting with Grand Theft Auto V (May 14),... Epic Games has scored itself another exclusive. Publisher Sega and developer The Creative Assembly announced that A Total War Saga: Troy will be headed to the Epic Games Store on August 13, 2020, and nowhere else for a full year. While that may rile up some people, it will be free to claim for the first 24 hours. Those who do can keep it forever. This is all barring a last-minute delay, of course. Either way, the Epic Games Store will be on the only place to claim A Total War Saga: Troy for around a full year. In a related FAQ, the developer says it will land on Steam sometime in Summer 2021. "Currently we are only planning on releasing Troy on these platforms," the developer states in no uncertain... Read more...
Epic Games has been on an absolute roll lately with the free titles in the Epic Games Store. Not that this is a new thing—weekly free games is one way the developer has been trying to entice players to its storefront—but more recently, there have been some major (and pricey) games up for grabs. The latest one is Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. We are a bit late on our heads up for this one, but not to worry, there is still ample time to claim your copy, if you wish. The Epic Games Store is serving up Borderlands: The Handsome Collection at no cost until June 4, 2020 (the freebie offer expires at 11:00 am). After that, it will presumably bump back up to its regular $59.99 price... Read more...
A week ago, Epic Games treated players to Grand Theft Auto V for free in the Epic Games Store, and despite being five years old (on PC), it drew so much interest and traffic that it temporarily crashed the store. How do you follow that up if you are Epic Games? You give away Sid Meier's Civilization VI for free the following week! Prior to today, Civilization VI was not available at the Epic Games Store. It makes its debut as the latest free title, and one of the most high profile ones to day. While not a brand new game—it came out in October 2016—it still sells for $59.99, the list price at the Epic Games Store and the going rate on Steam right now. Civilization VI boasts a bunch... So many people flocked to the Epic Games Store yesterday to claim a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for free that the platform buckled under the pressure. That is a pretty impressive draw from a game that has been available on the PC for five years. Who knows if future free titles will bring players out of the woodwork to the same degree, though if you are wondering what is on tap, a new leak might provide the answer. Here's the deal—Epic Games is running a "Mega Sale 2020" event with discounts of up to 75 percent and "endless Epic coupons" through June 11. While that is going on, Epic is continuing to give away games for free each week. Epic got the party started with GTA V. If you had trouble... Read more...
Epic Games appears to have jumped the gun and revealed the "mystery game" that is set to unlock as a free offering in the Epic Games Store today. In a now-deleted Twitter post, the official Epic Games Store account let the cat out of the bag, saying Grand Theft Auto V will ride into town, and that once you claim it, the game is "yours to keep forever." Free games on a weekly basis is one of major incentives Epic Games came up with to entice players (and by extension, developers as well) over to its digital distribution platform. Not without controversy, Epic Games also inks exclusive deals, whereby some titles are only available on the Epic Games Store for a period of time before heading over... Read more...
The Epic Games Store wants people to enforce the use of two-factor authentication for their accounts to enhance security. To encourage this practice, Epic Games Store has announced that through May 21, it will require two-factor authentication to be enabled on a user account before any free games can be claimed.  Players who login to their account and don't have two-factor authentication enabled will see a message when they attempt to claim free game that says, "Two Factor Authentication Required." The remainder of the message tells users that claiming the free game requires Two-Factor Authentication to be set up on their account to provide an additional level of security and to help prevent...
