So you slept through the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, and now wish you could travel back in time? Forget the DeLorean—the price of plutonium is off the charts these days—because there are still bargains out there. Over at Dell, you can score discounts on several different gaming PCs, including Alienware-brand desktops and laptops. One of the deals I find especially intriguing is for a decked out Alienware Aurora gaming desktop for $1,564.99 (save $765 over list price). At the heart of this system is a 9th generation Intel Core i7-9700K processor (8-core/8-thread, 3.6GHz to 4.9GHz, 12MB L3 cache) paired with a brawny NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super graphics card. Those components... Read more...
One of the advantages to owning a custom PC from a boutique builder is the meticulous attention to detail. Tight cable management is not just a perk, it is an expectation when paying a premium for a boutique shop to assemble your rig with off-the-shelf components, and having to wait a bit longer compared to buying from a bulk OEM is an inherent trade off. Or is it? Maingear, a stalwart in the boutique space, would argue otherwise. Maingear Vybe At PAX East 2019 - AMD Ryzen Edition Earlier this month at PAX East, Maingear announced what it is calling the Vybe Enthusiast Platform. You might already be familiar with the Vybe name -- it is the least expensive line of desktop PCs in Maingear's stable,... Read more...
Gone are the days when you needed a massive desktop tower for high end performance, especially gaming (though we still have an affinity for large systems). For those who prefer power in a compact setup, there are lots of options out there, including the new VivoPC X from ASUS. Powered by one of Intel's just-announced desktop Kaby Lake processors and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series GPU, the VivoPC X packs a mean punch in a small form factor (SFF) chassis. The aggressive looking 5-liter chassis measures 2.99 x 10.23 x 11.02 inches, which is plenty small enough to slide into a home theater arrangement like a dedicated console. It would also be suitable for a cramped dorm room or wherever else that... Read more...
Do you even VR, bro? That seems to be the question the computer industry at large is interested in asking, as there is a concerted effort to push VR gaming and experiences as the next big thing. It's coming from all directions, even system makers, hence the Trident from MSI. The Trident is a "complete and ready-to-go gaming system" that's being pitched as the world's smallest VR gaming desktop. Perhaps a year a go this thing would have been considered a Steam Machine, and before that it would be called an HTPC with gaming chops or simply a PC gaming console. That doesn't mean the VR moniker is unwarranted hype—to the Trident's credit, it's packing the necessary hardware and ports to meet and... Read more...
Remember Gateway? The bulk OEM is a bit of an obscure name these days, having been scooped up by Acer several years ago and no longer serving direct-to-consumer sales via its website or by telephone. Nevertheless, Gateway is still plugging away, its systems found at places like TigerDirect, and today we were given a heads up of new SX and DX Series desktops primarily aimed at students, though penny-pinchers should take notice, too. Gateway's DX Series desktops are the more performance oriented of the two. The new DX towers have a modern flair to them, and underneath the hood you'll find up to an Intel Core i7 3770 (Ivy Bridge) processor, up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, up to 2TB of hard drive storage,... It's been a long and anticipatory wait for Ivy Bridge, and while Intel's next generation processors are still a couple of weeks away from making their official debut, platforms that support the new chips are already starting to trickle into the market place. CyberPowerPC, for example, just announced that it's incorporating Intel's new Z77 chipset into its current line of desktop gaming rigs. "Starting today, CyberpowerPC customers can configure new desktop gaming systems based on the Z77 chipset motherboards from major manufacturers such as ASUS, Gigabyte, and ASRock," CyberPowerPC stated in a press release. "The Intel Z77 chipset, which offers advanced overclocking of the core; integrated USB... Read more...
Take from this what you will, but for the very first time ever, mobile PC shipments outnumbered desktop shipments in China, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly China PC Shipment and Forecast Report. There's a bit of a caveat that goes with the claim. The mobile PC segment, as DisplaySearch calculates it, includes tablet PC shipments (in addition to notebooks and mini-notes), of which China is the third largest market in the world. "Although shipments in desktop PCs are flat, the mobile PC market continued to show strong growth, reaching 26.5 million in 2H’11, up 25 percent from 1H’11," DisplaySearch said in its report. "In Q3’11, mobile PC shipments in China... Read more...

What’s more, the ThinkCentre M58e meets Energy Star 5.0 and EPEAT Gold standards, making it one of the more energy efficient and environmentally responsible desktops on the market. We wrote earlier about HP's announcement about NVIDIA GPU failures in 38 of its slimline desktop PCs.  While that's bad enough, The Inquirer says it has memos from allegedly from an internal knowledge base at Apple which states that all of NVIDIA's parts based on its G92 architecture sent to Apple have had to undergo the same change in bump material required to fix the issues in the heat-related failures we've been talking about since earlier this year.It should be noted that taking the source into account, a big fat "rumor," or perhaps "unsubstantiated" should be placed right here. However, they're not always off the mark.  And, after all, if HP is seeing issues, why not another PC... It was just a matter of time, but the defective Nvidia mobile GPUs that keep coming to light in a growing number of laptops models have finally made the unfortunate leap to desktops. Hewlett-Packard (HP) is reporting that 38 different models in its Slimline Desktop PC line are potentially affected by possibly defective Nvidia-based GPUs. HP reports that the affected models "may not boot or may not display video," and has implemented a "Limited Warranty Service Enhancement" that "provides for a motherboard replacement at no charge for 12 months from the date your one-year Hardware Limited Warranty expires or until December 31, 2009, whichever is sooner." Owners who have already paid for repairs... Read more...
