We've long heard rumors of there being a Surface Phone in development, or at least on the roadmap, though so far nothing of the such has materialized. Just the opposite, Microsoft has moved away from phones to focus on other products and services. The Surface Phone is one rumor that refuses to die, however, and now there is chatter that Dell might be tasked with making the device. Let's jump down the rabbit hole. Over at WinFuture, there is a report of Qualcomm making a Snapdragon 850 system-on-chip (SoC) for Windows 10 devices. It's said to tie into Microsoft's recent collaboration with ARM to run Windows 10 devices on ARM hardware, as we have seen with a spattering of Windows 10 laptops with... Read more...

There are a litany of reasons why you might consider buying a gaming PC rather than rolling your own rig, including cost. Yes, many graphics cards have recently settled down closer to MSRP, but who knows if they will go back up again? On top of that, system memory is still trending on the high side (compared to a year or two ago). For the most part, pre-built systems have been somewhat sheltered from these volatile markets relative to the channel. That means the opportunity still exists to get into PC gaming at a reasonable price with a pre-built PC; Dell's Inspiron Gaming Desktop (5680) is a prime example. In fact, the Inspiron Gaming line has consistently represented one of the best values... Read more...

Shipments of desktops, laptops, and workstation machines tallied in the tens of millions in the first quarter of 2018, though overall the market for new PCs was flat to start the year, according to the number crunching analysts at International Data Corporation. Overall, the market saw 60.4 million units shipped, which is virtually the same as the number of new PCs that entered the marketplace in the same quarter a year ago. IDC lauded this as a good thing, saying that staying flat for the third consecutive quarter is a better proposition than the 1.5 percent decline it had previously forecast. And in that regard it is. However, research firm Gartner had a different take based on its own set... Read more...
Dell has been hard at work updating its notebooks with Intel’s latest 8th Gen Core processors, and we’ve already seen the fruits of their labor in the premium XPS 13. It’s now time for the business-oriented Latitude notebooks to get a taste of Kaby Lake R, so here today we have the Latitude 7390 2-in-1 on the test bench, ready to be put through its paces. The XPS 13 impressed us with incredible performance, even showing inter-generational gains using the same chip between late 2017 and early 2018 models, thanks to an improved thermal solution among a few other tweaks. The Latitude 7390 we have on deck does not have the XPS’s fancy Gore material layer or dual-blower setup,... Read more...
Last week, Intel unleashed a flood of new 8th generation "Coffee Lake" Core processors for both desktop and notebook systems. We gave you a brief overview of Dell's new gaming-centric notebooks, which have since dropped their Inspiron branding. The new G-Series notebooks are represented by the G3, G5 and G7. Luckily, we were able to get some hands-on time with the new gaming notebooks at PAX East, and we must say that they are quite fetching machines in person with plenty of high-powered hardware to back them up. All of the machines are available with up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics cards with Max-Q technology incorporated for smooth gameplay, which is something that... Read more...
Dell's popular XPS 15 notebook received a Coffee Lake infusion today, and it makes an already great laptop even more appealing. On the processor front, the XPS 15 is available with 8th generation processors covering the Core i5 and Core i7 (H-Series) product families. In addition, the range-topping Core i9-8950HK 6-core chips is also available as an option, if you need the absolute best Intel mobile processor that money can buy. The Core i9-8950HK is a hexa-core beast (12 threads) with a base clock of 2.9GHz. The processor, however, leverages Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology, which allows it to clock up to 4.8GHz on a single core. Core i5 models (i5-8300H) are available in quad-core/octa-thread... Brace yourself for a barrage of product announcements, as that tends to happen when Intel releases a new batch of processors, as it did this morning. In this case, Intel added a bunch of new Coffee Lake chips to the fold. Dell did not waste any time utilizing the new CPUs, as it has gone and revamped several of its product lines, notably its Alienware and Inspiron gaming laptops, and its Inspiron all-in-one family. Dell's Alienware 15 and 17 laptops now boast new 8th generation Intel Core i5, i7, and i9 processor options, including those newfangled 6-core chips. And for the first time ever, Dell says its Alienware laptops can be overclocked up to 5GHz, a feat made possible in part by added focus... Read more...
At CES earlier this year, Dell strutted out a few new products, including its XPS 15 2-in-1 with a 360-degree hinge. It is the first XPS 15 to adopt the convertible 2-in-1 form factor, providing customers with flexible use case scenarios, like folding the display all the way back onto itself to become a tablet, or propping it up in tent mode as a kitchen counter companion. While not groundbreaking in 2018, it's a welcome upgrade to one of the more desirable and premium laptops on the market. What is groundbreaking, however, is what lies inside this laptop in terms of processing engines. Dell's new 15-inch convertible wields Intel's 8th generation Kaby Lake G processors with Radeon RX Vega graphics.... Read more...
