Intel's upcoming Core i9-12900K processor is the star of yet another leaked benchmark run, and like several that have come before this one, it adds to the pre-launch hype and expectations surrounding Alder Lake. Obviously we can't put too much stock into pre-release (read: unofficial) benchmarks. But they are out there all the same, and they are collectively setting an interesting bar for Intel to achieve. Alder Lake is putting on quite a show in leaks, though obviously we can only glean so much from unconfirmed reports and benchmark runs. For now, those are all we have to go on, until Alder Lake arrives in earnest later this year. That said, a fresh leak has Intel's upcoming Core i9-12900K processor climbing above 30,000 points in Cinebench R23. That is a monstrous score, no doubt. Whether it is a legitimate benchmark run or not, time will tell. But if it is, then the Core i9-12900K is going to bring some big time multi-threaded performance to the table when it launches, perhaps surpassing AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5950X, which itself is no slouch. The CPU wars are not coming to an end anytime soon, and instead, we can expect some interesting skirmishes in the months and years ahead. It starts with Intel's next-gen Alder Lake launch that is now right around the bend. Early leaks have mostly been encouraging, including the latest one that shows a Core i9-12900K curb-stomping AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5950X. Put the pitchforks down, there are indeed some heavy caveats and disclaimers that come with this leak. Intel is close to releasing its first batch of processors based on its hybrid Alder Lake architecture, at which point we will finally have some definitive answers about how it performs. Until then, we're left to leaks and rumors. In theory, leaks should be a little more reliable since we're so close to a retail release. And if that is the case, a new batch of benchmark data for a trio of Alder Lake CPUs bodes well for Intel's upcoming launch. Not every performance leak related to Alder Lake has been super encouraging, but this latest one certainly falls into that category. It showcases the upcoming Core i9-12900K in Geekbench, and both the single-threaded and multi-threaded scores are nothing short of impressive. They also seemingly highlight why the OS matters (more on that in a moment). We've seen the Core i9-12900K in numerous leaks up to this point. Each passing day seems to bring with it a leak of some kind related to Alder Lake, the heterogeneous architecture that will power Intel's next round of processors. Apparently there is already pent up demand for Intel's upcoming Alder Lake CPUs that are slated to launch by the end of the year. As such, later revision engineering samples (known as qualification samples, or QS chips) are fetching big bucks—up to around $1,200 for the flagship of the bunch, the Core i9-12900K. It is interesting to see these QS chips sell for so much money. Alder Lake is a major new architecture that brings with it a new platform (600 series chipset), a new socket (LGA 1700), and support for DDR5 memory and PCI Express 5.0. There have been lots of leaks pertaining to Alder Lake, the hybrid CPU architecture Intel will launch later this year. As we get closer to launch, the leaks presumably become more reliable, and so we might already know some finalized details about three upcoming SKUs, including what is poised to be the flagship CPU of the bunch, the Core i9-12900K. Within a matter of months, Intel will introduce its first Alder Lake processors, effectively marking a near wholesale transition to hybrid computing, and kicking off the DDR5 memory era. From an official standpoint, SKUs and specifications are still a mystery.
