There is little doubt that the Nintendo Switch has been a huge success. Many people are hoping to get their hands on a discounted console or itching to see how Nintendo will update the Switch. However, it appears that for the time being, fans should not expect any major changes. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that his company will not be cutting the price or updating the hardware of the Nintendo Switch. Furukawa was recently interviewed by The Sankei News, a daily online Japanese newspaper. Furukawa remarked, “Nintendo Switch is our primary sales objective, and we are not considering a successor or a price cut at this time.” He also noted that Nintendo’s goal is... Read more...
The much anticipated, and sometimes controversial, next installment in the Battlefield franchise is here. There are many aspects to the game, like the World War II setting for example, which have gamers questioning whether or not we need yet another FPS set in the same era in history, especially in light of last year's Call of Duty WWII. The thing that has had most of us tech enthusiasts waiting with baited breath, however, is the chance to finally see NVIDIA's GeForce RTX  real-time Ray Tracing effects live, in an actual game. Battlefield is indeed the first publicly available game to use these new DXR/RTX effects and it's exciting to finally see new technology employed, beyond the standard... Read more...
HDR -- you’ve undoubtedly seen the three letters stamped on the box of the latest 4K monitors and TVs while passing by them in the store, and while it is still relatively new HDR (High-Dynamic Range) technology is, without question, changing the way in which our senses take in next-gen entertainment. NVIDIA is at the forefront of driving this cutting-edge display technology with new G-SYNC monitors that profoundly impact three primary pillars of how visual entertainment is perceived by the human eye: color, brightness, and contrast. How that translates to today’s visually advanced games is a true-to-life spectrum of vibrant colors, dramatically more intense light... Read more...

If you're a frequent reader of HotHardware, then you're well aware that we've been quite impressed with the NVIDIA SHIELD TV. Not only is the pint-sized device a competent Android gaming console, but it also serves as an Android TV hub, a media streamer (for services like Netflix and Hulu), and can even function as a Plex Media Server. Finally, it can serve all this gaming and video content with the help of Google Assistant to search and provide key information all via voice command. Today, NVIDIA SHIELD TV is also gaining the ability to be the focal point for your smart home efforts now, thanks to new compatibility with the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem. The support isn't integrated directly... Read more...
A new feature of NVIDIA's latest GeForce technology for laptops that we weren't able to evaluate until now, is something NVIDIA calls Whisper Mode. Like its recently introduced Max-Q technology that paves the way for thinner and lighter gaming laptops such as the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501, Whisper Mode is another type of mobile gaming optimization, except it focuses on noise output with the intrinsic benefit of lower power draw as well. Short and to the point, it is an intelligent framerate pacing technology designed to lower GPU power consumption, utilization, and ultimately fan noise, while still delivering a smooth and playable gaming experience. "To determine WhisperMode settings we measure... Read more...
Buying a shiny new car is an easy way to get the latest in-car technologies, but it’s not the most economical. I've had my fair share of new car purchases in the last decade – a 2008 Chevy HHR SS, 2011 Volkswagen Routan SE, 2014 Mazda 5 Sport and a 2015 Nissan Leaf – and driven hundreds of press cars featuring the latest technologies and infotainment systems. Despite new cars being technically superior on paper, the average age of vehicles on the road in 2016 was 11.6 years old, according to IHS Markit. We’ve seen substantial upgrades to the car stereo and infotainment systems in the last decade, including the elimination of the cassette and CD players, integrated navigation systems, improved... When I first heard about Nintendo's plan to build a hybrid console, I thought it was a long shot. And truthfully, it was. But I also reckoned the response to a 2-in-1 console (or 3-in-1 if you count tabletop mode, as Nintendo does) would ultimately be lukewarm. Having now spent the past couple of weeks actually playing with the Nintendo Switch, I can say I was (mostly) wrong in my original assessment, and certainly in my expectations. We'll get to my own thoughts in a little bit, but first let's talk about the Switch's reception. Despite the skepticism by myself and many others leading up to the Switch's launch, gamers have been tripping over themselves in a mad dash to get their hands on one.... Read more...
If your brand spanking new, highly coveted Nintendo Switch is experiencing Joy-Con connectivity issues, you are not alone. Nintendo has just responded to the many disappointed Switch owners who have not received any joy from their controllers. The issue appears to lie primarily with the left Joy-Con controller, if its signal is interrupted while in TV mode. This will occur, for example, when another person stands between the Joy-Con and the Switch. The system’s first update does not appear to have fixed the issue. Nintendo stated, “We have received some reports and are looking into them. As with all Nintendo video game systems, we will continue to monitor the performance of Nintendo Switch hardware... Nintendo is getting ready to shake up the gaming console space with its Switch, a hybrid system that equal parts about playing games in the living room as it is about getting your gaming fix on the go. A key aspect of being able to tackle stationary and mobile gaming is the control scheme. We'll need some hands on time to truly get a feel for how things work, though in the meantime Nintendo has released a video that focuses on its detachable Joy-Con controllers. There are left and right Joy-Con controllers that detach from the Switch when playing games in front of a big screen TV and attach to the Switch's 6.2-inch display for mobile gaming, essentially turning the system into a supercharged... NVIDIA announced an updated SHIELD TV bundle back at the Consumer Electronics Show, which offers a host of new features thanks to some fresh hardware and an Android Nougat based OS upgrade. The updated SHIELD TV, however, isn’t totally new. Internally, the device was still packing NVIDIA’s Tegra X1 SoC like the original, which, even after a couple of years on the market, is still an exceptionally strong performer. The new SHIELD TV also has the same memory and base storage configurations, and the SHIELD Remote is similar too. However, NVIDIA significantly shrunk down the chassis by eliminating accommodations for an internal hard drive, and lopped the micro-SD expansion slot off the machine as... Read more...
The gaming community has lost a legend. Namco-Bandi recorded his death as having occurred on Wednesday, January 22, though decided to wait until today before issuing a press release (PDF) on its Japanese-language website.Nakamura served as an engineer in the Japanese Navy before founding Nakamura Manufacturing in 1955. He started off with two mechanical horses that he purchased for $3,000, while renting space on the roof of a department store. A lot of Nintendo fans were disappointed and even downright angry when they were unable to secure an NES Classic Edition console in time for Christmas. Supply fell way short of demand, while many of those who did manage to get their hands on one of the retro consoles took to selling them on eBay and Craigslist at around a 400 percent markup. Will a similar situation play out with the Nintendo Switch? There are reasons to believe it will, though Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is confident it won't. The Nintendo boss told Wired in an interview that Nintendo anticipated the NES Classic Edition being popular with consumers between 30 and 40 years old, with kids, and who have perhaps...
