Humans have been dreaming up machines that take care of everyday household tasks since the Industrial Revolution. Smart home devices of various types have existed for several decades, but have become increasingly popular over the last few years as they have become more powerful, intelligent, and connected. Many consumers are now able to do everything from preheating their ovens to checking up on their home security cameras, with a simple tap on their smart device. Lenovo started to inch its way into the smart home market last year. The Lenovo Smart Display with Google Assistant was released in 2018. It was one of the first Google Assistant-enabled display devices to hit the market. The device... Read more...
Lenovo's line of Legion laptops and desktops are designed for gamers, but one complaint levied against last year's Legion Y730 model was the lack of more powerful graphics options. However, Lenovo was obviously listening to consumer feedback and the new Lenovo Legion Y740 we are looking at today, rights this previous wrong by giving potential buyers not one, but two powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs to choose from. The base model comes with a GeForce RTX 2060, but if you're able to spend a few more greenbacks on your config, you can move up to a GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q. NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q wasn't the only high-end component selection Lenovo managed to squeeze under the hood of this... Read more...
It has been a number of years since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has received an update. However, one fan has taken it upon themself to modernize the award-winning game. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is currently being beautifully remastered in Unreal Engine 4. YouTube user CryZENx has been lovingly overhauling Ocarina of Time and other Nintendo 64 games for a number of years. He recently showed off his progress in a 25-minute long YouTube video. Not all of the controls and animations are perfect, but it is certainly a refreshing update. Image from CryZENx  CryZENx has even created a demo for potential gamers. So far the entire opening of the game up to the first dungeon is... Read more...
The Lenovo Smart display is the first in an assault of Google Assistant-enabled devices set to hit the market this year. They will take on Amazon's Echo Show in a battle for smart home assistant technology, with not only a set of ears, but also a set of eyes and a display face to complete the experience. Priced at $249.99 for a 10-inch version and $199.99 for an 8-inch variant, with identical hardware specs except for the display, these are a new breed of smart home devices that have the potential to give Google and its OEM partners a leg-up on Amazon. Tech loving Star Wars fans have something new to lust after this holiday season courtesy of Lenovo and Disney, the unique Star Wars: Jedi Challenges. This is an augmented reality gaming system featuring the Lenovo Mirage AR headset (which works with a number of smartphones), a fancy "collector quality" Lightsaber, and a lighted, spherical beacon that looks somewhat like Epcot Center. Oh, Lord Vader... That Lightsaber The Lightsaber included in the kit looks fantastic and really is collector quality. It looks and feels like something you might pay big bucks for at a convention or specialty shop. It has a white tip when off, but glows a soft blue color when the saber is on and... Read more...
‘Tis the season to stomp on your enemies with the help of new gaming hardware, so we jumped at the chance to fire up a couple of Lenovo’s top gaming machines, a burly 17-inch gaming laptop and a gaming desktop PC designed in conjunction with Razer. Just a small side note: we're actually giving away these machines in the days ahead to a couple of lucky individuals participating in our Lenovo HOT Holiday Giveaway. We thought it might be interesting to preview these to beasts before we gave them away, though.  Regardless, the maker of the ThinkPad line has been fighting its way into the gaming market with the Y900 series, and as bold and powerful as these systems are, they have Lenovo’s... On the surface, there's nothing particularly glamorous about a universal remote. It's simply a device that controls multiple electronic gadgets, like your TV and Blu-ray player, so you don't have to keep track of and juggle multiple remotes. No big deal, right? If that's what you think, then you haven't encountered Logitech's Harmony line.Like regular universal remotes, Logitech's Harmony models consolidate your electronic controllers into a single piece of hardware, only they do it in spectacular fashion. They're also far more capable than the no-name models that places like K-Mart peddle in the clearance bin and at the checkout line, and for what it's worth, they look good too.Logitech's Harmony... The Xbox One might not be the best selling console of the modern generation -- that honor belongs to Sony's PlayStation 4 -- but give Microsoft credit for continually improving the experience with frequent updates. Hundreds of new features have been added via 10 updates within the console's first year, and this weekend, Xbox One owners will receive the last major upgrade of of 2014. What can you expect? For one, Microsoft is adding custom backgrounds to the mix. Each account on your Xbox One console can have a background all their own, with choice of color as a theme or achievement art as the background image. Alternately, you can use the media Player app to pluck any JPG or PNG image off of... Read more...
We have seen a rapid influx of entry-level to enthusiast-class gaming systems and hardware over the last few months. The Maingear Rush we recently evaluated targets the most demanding PC users with its twin AMD Radeon R9 295X2 (8GB DDR5) video cards, killer Intel i7-4960X processor and fast storage. Weighing in at a hefty $8,393 as configured though, the Maingear Rush might offer a ton of performance, but you've got to pay to play. Not everyone can afford a Lamborghini of a PC gaming system, and with that in mind, Lenovo has crafted a solution that offers a considerable amount of value and performance. Meet the Lenovo Erazer x510, a mainstream gaming rig with a slick... Read more...
Armed with Facebook’s deep pockets and strong backstop, Oculus VR is much better able to poach talent from big companies than when it was just an exciting startup (John Carmack notwithstanding). The big get for this week is Adrian Wong, who left his post as a lead electrical engineer at Google[x], where he worked on Google Glass, to join the Oculus team. Credit: Brandon Chan via TechCrunch As reported by TechCrunch, Wong announced on Facebook (oh, I get it now) that May 2nd was his last day at Google, and now his LinkedIn profile confirms that he’s moved over to Oculus. Wong worked on the systems, camera, and RF for Glass, and on the Explorer Edition of the specs he was in charge... Read more...
Social networking has become one of the hottest online activities with 73 percent of adults using a social networking site of some kind, according to data compiled by Pew Internet. Around 4 out of 10 online adults get their social groove going with multiple sites, but which are the most popular? Facebook is the obvious big man on campus, but you might be surprised at where the other sites stand. Like Facebook users, Instagram users are likely to check in on a daily basis. However, Instagram is the least popular social networking (by a hair) out of Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Source: Pew Research Center Mark Zuckerberg's online playground dominates all others with 71 percent of... Read more...
If we asked you to name five gaming PC manufacturers, Lenovo probably wouldn't make the list. No other company in the world ships more PCs than Lenovo, but of those machines, relatively few are dedicated gaming boxes. Traditionally, Lenovo has focused its efforts on business class desktops and laptops, though the company is known to play in performance waters on occasion, most notably with its IdeaCentre K Series of high-end towers. These aren't hardcore gaming boxes like the boutique builders offer, however, so there's room in Lenovo's lineup to add a dedicated line of systems built exclusively for gamers, and that's what we have with the IdeaCentre Erazer X700. This is a big system at... Read more...
Information about the NSA's data gathering efforts continues, with newly-released information of the agency's efforts on the social networking front. It's already been revealed that the NSA gathers information from many different sources, but this latest information gives us a clear idea as to the extent that this data can be used and interpreted. For example, it's being said that entire maps have been created from social networking data that ties the person to a number of different sources: Their friends, locations, time of activity, traveling companions and so forth. With the unparalleled access to certain information that the NSA has had, we can imagine that these charts would be more elaborate... Read more...
A compromised password for your social network account can quickly jump from an inconvenience to a nightmare, so services like Google have long offered two-step verification features to help you prove you’re, well, you. LinkedIn is finally getting in on the game with its own verification program, which sends you a text message when someone accesses your account from a new computer. If that someone is you, you enter a code and you’re on your way. If that’s not you, whoever has your password is stopped in his tracks. Two-step verification on LinkedIn from LinkedIn LinkedIn only makes you go through the two-factor authentication process when you access the service from a device... Read more...
