The EVO series is a member of Origin's thin-and-light family of gaming laptops. The words "thin-and-light" aren't often used when describing powerful gaming laptops, but considering Origin PC has managed to squeeze both an Intel 9th generation 6-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX series GPU into the EVO17-S, a machine that is less than an inch thick, the moniker fits. However, at about 6.6lbs the machine isn't exactly light either, though we digress... The Intel Core i7-9750H inside this gaming laptop is a high-end mobile processor that’s based on the Coffee Lake architecture (2019 refresh, CFL-HR). The processor clocks in between 2.6GHz and 4.5GHz and can execute up to twelve... Read more...
The Overwatch community has been shaken by a controversial “social experiment”. “Ellie”, the first female North American Overwatch Contenders player, was actually an imposter. Both Blizzard and Overwatch Contenders team Second Wind have confirmed the sad truth. Overwatch Contenders is a tournament for potential pro players. Twelve teams in each of the seven Contender regions battle it out multiple times a year, and the winners have a chance of joining the Overwatch League. Overwatch Contenders team Second Wind signed on a player only known as Ellie at the last minute. Every other player has listed their full name and gaming handle, but Ellie reportedly did not want... NVIDIA's Max-Q technology has only been on the market for about a year, but in that time quite few OEMs have jumped on the bandwagon. And for good reason. Max-Q is, or wants to be, the answer to a problem that has plagued mobile gamers since the first gaming laptop was birthed, spanked, and shipped off into the real world. We are, of course, talking about size. Bigger is not always better, especially in the mobile computing market. Most gaming laptops are bulky, heavy, and short on battery life. With Max-Q, NVIDIA is looking to change this by focusing on what they call the sweet spot when it comes to performance, power usage, and acoustics.  In order to achieve this "sweet spot" NVIDIA has... It was not that long ago when the idea of buying a gaming laptop meant spending a heavy premium versus a desktop setup. That was always a tough pill to swallow, because for the most part, there was no way to upgrade critical components like a GPU, down the road a bit. What you got is what you would have to live with for the life of your laptop. That latter restriction remains today but now, more than ever with more powerful mobile platforms, gaming laptops can offer a reasonably good return on investment. That is certainly true of the EON15-S from Origin PC, the 15.6-inch frag-ready notebook we're looking at today. With a starting price of $999, the EON15-S is not an expensive gaming laptop... It used to be that large physical dimensions were a telltale sign of a Herculean gaming PC. Looming desktop towers with wild looking exteriors indicated the presence of serious hardware inside. Cracking one open might reveal multiple graphics cards and fancy liquid cooling setups, both almost considered prerequisites in order to crank up the eye candy in demanding games and to play at high resolutions. But somewhere along the way, things began to change. While some of the most powerful gaming systems still reside inside gargantuan full tower enclosures, a growing number of decked out desktops have gone the opposite route. One of the best examples of this is Origin PC's Chronos line of small form... Read more...
Overwatch, the team-based multiplayer shooter from Blizzard Entertainment has proven to be an unstoppable force in the industry having now reached the hands of more than 7 million gamers within a week of launch. Many predicted as much once the early beta saw nearly 10 million users. Admittedly, we too have been immovably glued to the game since installing the PC version early last week. It features a wide variety of characters, and play styles, with frenetic-pace gameplay that is easy and intuitive for casual players. Yet Overwatch dishes out plenty of depth and strategy for crafty players who strive at filling specific roles in a team-based setting. That’s us for sure. So after about 100 intense... Read more...
The Oculus Rift has been steadily moving towards production over the past few years as new breakthroughs and improvements allowed for further improvements to the much-discussed VR headset. Oculus VR brought their headset to CES 2015 this year, but they weren't demonstrating new visual technology this time around -- instead, it was 3D positional audio. 3D positional audio is a technology that simulates where sounds are coming from in direct relation to your head's location at the time. There have been a number of games and sound engines that incorporated these kinds of effects over the years, but most of these engines are primarily concerned with sound simulation on a 2D coordinate grid. This... Read more...
It was two years ago this month that the original developer kit for the Oculus Rift blew past its $250,000 goal on Kickstarter en router to raking in nearly $2.5 million. The headline read, "Step into the Game" with the Oculus Rift being billed as "the first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games." At the time, few could have predicted that it would be bought out by Facebook, but now that it has, what does the future hold? Will it be a bunch of 3D Candy Crush games? According to Oculus co-founder and CEO Brendan Iribe, the headset's future lies in the classroom. "As we were marching along, we started to realize it was going to be a lot more important and have a lot more impact... Read more...
John Carmack’s former employer, Zenimax, went after the industry veteran last week claiming that important code that he used in helping to build the Oculus Rift VR headset is actually IP owned by Zenimax. The company also stated that it provided VR technology to Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and others over the past couple of years in support of the Oculus Rift’s development. Carmack fired back on Twitter and Oculus VR denied the claims at the outset, but the company now has an official response. We present it in bulleted form because that’s how Oculus VR sent it to us. -There is not a line of Zenimax code or any of its technology in any Oculus products. -John Carmack did... Read more...
The Internet is a vast, vast place. It's home to billions of domains, billions of users, billions of connections... well, you get the idea. It's a big place. But, as you might expect, even the Internet has giants of its own, and while it's a level playing field in some respects, there are a few web sites that generate more traffic, more attention, and more users than others. A new report has collected global usage data in order to assemble a new global map, which showcases which nations rely on which sites the most. Want to take a stab at which two sites dominate the most nations? Google and Facebook. Neither should come as a shock, but it's still impressive to see just how many countries visit... Read more...
One of the most active spam bots, Asprox, has a new gimmick for a Trojan it's been e-mailing around for the past six months: Facebook. Its botmasters are trying to cash in on last week's blocked accounts and unfriending frenzy. Wednesday, November 17, was National Facebook Unfriend day, the brainchild of late night talk show comedian Jimmy Kimmel. However, the day before, Facebook confirmed that it was automatically disabling accounts it found to be suspiciously "fake." In the process it said a "bug" made it also disable a bunch of real users' accounts. Lots of information and disinformation began to promptly circulate about the accounts being blocked because Facebook required users to scan and... Read more...
There's a new company joining the ranks of boutique system builders with customization options that could turn the head of even the most die-hard DIY-er. The paint is scarcely dry on the Origin logo—the business opened on November 17th—but the corporation's three founders each spent a decade at Alienware prior to founding Origin. Their collective expertise is already evident; Origin offers unique customization options that set a new bar for what constitutes a "customizable" system. In this preview, we'll examine both the nascent company and the design of the review system it sent for evaluation; hard numbers will follow. If You Can Buy It, They Can Build ItOrigin offers all of the typical custom... Oops, they hacked Twitter again.  Yep, in a breach totally separate from the phishing scam from last weekend, Twitter has been hacked.  And not just any account, either.  We're talking about the accounts of none other than the President-elect (which had been idle since the election), Britney Spears, Fox News, and a lot more.In total, according to Twitter, 33 high-profile accounts were hacked.  The explanation?  Support tools that are supposed to be used in case a user forgets a password or some other dire emergency were hacked into. What Happened? The issue with these 33 accounts is different from the Phishing scam aimed at Twitter users this weekend. These accounts were... Read more...
