Is Instagram gunning for Pinterest’s user base? A security researcher recently discovered new details for public Collections in Instagram's code. This feature would help Instagram directly compete with Pinterest and provide new money-making opportunities for Instagram creators. Instagram launched their “Collections” feature over two years ago. This feature allows users to save and organize posts from their Instagram feed. For better or for worse, these Collections are currently private. Users can click on “See more like this” to find posts similar to the ones in their particular Collections, but they cannot view other users’ Collections. If a user would like... Read more...
Earlier this month we talked about the folks working to organize the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games wanting to add eSports games. Ratings for the Olympics have been on the decline as it appears fewer people care to watch most of the sports that the games highlight each year. This led the Paris Olympics committee to decide that adding in eSports might be a good thing to boost ratings and viewership. As you are likely aware, eSports draw huge crowds and have very avid supporters that could help turn the Olympic ratings slump around and get younger people interested in the games again. Most would assume from the willingness to consider eSports that it could mean shooters like DOTA 2, Counter-Strike,... Read more...
In addition to being lots of fun, LAN parties also afford hardcore gamers and enthusiasts a forum to show off their rigs. Dusty, ho-hum home systems are the norm, of course, but there are also some modded systems, decked out with custom cooling, lighting and paint jobs. And, of course, there are the high-end, boutique-built gaming systems as well.Sporting slick cases and the latest hardware, custom gaming PCs always stand out, but they are usually huge beasts that aren’t meant to be carried around regularly. That’s where iBuypower’s Revolt 2 comes in. Designed to deliver head-turning looks and performance, it’s also meant to make your next LAN party trip less of a back-breaker. iBuypower Revolt... It's official, folks -- we can finally stop arguing over which is the superior game console, the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Quite frankly, it's a pointless debate, and it took a self-taught engineer to put the argument to rest, which he did by combining both game systems into a 22-inch laptop. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the "PlayBox," a gaming laptop that's equal parts Xbox One and PS4 rolled into one. The PlayBox wins the argument because it allows you to play games on either system, and when it comes down to it, the ability to play games is all that matters. Built for a "specific customer," the owner of this prototype system needn't worry about exclusives since he now has a system that can... Read more...
Imagine you are sitting in a restaurant and, instead of being served by a human waiter; a small, flying robot comes up to your table to serve you. That’s the scenario taking place in Singapore as restaurant-goers visit one of Timbre Group’s five outlets.By the end of next year, the autonomous flying robotic waiters, called Infinium-Serve, are expected to start serving customers. Designed and developed by Infinium Robotics, the company’s goal is to provide a product that will increase the productivity of restaurant outlets. Especially when it comes to businesses that are unable to hire enough people or are facing a shortage of manpower which appears to be a problem in Singapore.Infinium Robotics... Read more...
Last fall, a couple of reports trickled out that didn't bode too well for Facebook's future. They claimed that teens were effectively leaving the social network en masse - it was simply no longer cool, a reality heightened by the fact that so many parents also use the service. Well, as it now appears, some conclusions might have been met too early. To see where things stand today, Forrester Research surveyed 4,500 teens to learn about their social network use. An impressive 8 out of 10 responded that they visit Facebook at least once per month, whereas a third said that they visit the site "all the time". What might be more important than either of those results though is the fact that half of... Read more...

Intel and Toshiba aren't exactly strange bedfellows, but put the two of them together to collaborate on a Hollywood-quality film and, well, things tend to get a little weird. To two technology firms are working on a social film titled "The Power Inside" starring Harvey Keitel ("Reservoir Dogs"), Craig Roberts ("Submarine"), Analeigh Tipton ("Crazy, Stupid, Love"), Reid Ewing ("Modern Family"), and Zack Pearlman ("The Inbetweeners"), and possibly you as well. First things first. "The Power Inside" is described as a blockbuster-class experiment in social entertainment. This is actually the third year Intel and Toshiba have partnered with award-winning directors to produce a Hollywood-quality film,... Read more...
Companies that aren't extra careful with their social media accounts can end up with egg on their faces, and sometimes it just boils down to having a strong enough password. This is a point Twitter wants to drive home with its users following a couple of high profile hacker attacks on Burger King, which was hijacked and overrun with McDonalds content, and Chrysler, which saw its Jeep Twitter feed hacked by prankster who posted the brand had been sold to Cadillac. Maybe Burger King's password was Whopper123 and maybe it wasn't, but either way, Twitter felt now was a good time to talk about password security. "Over the past couple of days, there's been a fair amount of conversation about account... Read more...
Given all the frenzy around ultrabooks, Microsoft's Surface, and the low power potential of future chips like Haswell, you might think that desktop replacement-class laptops had fallen out of favor with modern laptop manufacturers. iBuyPower's CZ-17 "Valkyrie" is proof that they haven't -- and while its size and weight won't appeal to road warriors or anyone who needs a svelte portable, it packs a number of significant features into its chassis, at a price that won't break the bank. It also makes a few compromises along the way; we'll show you where they are.   iBuyPower's CZ-17 Valkyrie Specifications & Features  Processor Options Dimensions Weight Display System Memory Graphics... Well, those rumors of the "Facebook phone" have amounted to something. It's not exactly a "Facebook phone," but it's close! INQ is a little-known cellphone company, but now with this, they're getting on the map in a big way. The company has just released the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q phones, both of which are "Facebook focused." The INQ Cloud Touch is an Android 2.2-based phone with full touch-panel, while the Cloud Q is the same phone with the addition of a QWERTY keyboard. Both phones feature tri-band HSPA, a 3.5" touch-panel, 5MP camera and above-average Facebook support. There's even a dedicated Spotify key, which turns this into the ultimate social networking phone. It's clear that INQ is... Read more...
Debt collectors have begun using Facebook as a tool, although it is unclear if that is legal under FTC regulations. Here we have a further example of why not to use social networking sites: the Israeli military has used Facebook to catch approximately 1,000 draft dodgers. These were women who lied about their religious background to avoid serving in the Israeli military. Israeli military service is compulsory, but Jewish women can be exempted if they are religiously observant. Two years ago, the military hired private investigators as, of late, drafting dodging has become more prevalent. The evidence ranged from one woman who was caught updating her Facebook profile on the Sabbath to another... Read more...
At the annual Research at Intel event, the company Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner announced Intel's plans for a new research division. This purpose of this new department, dubbed Interaction and Experience Research (IXR), is to "reinvent the computing experience in ways we can only begin to imagine." Supress your gag reflex long enough to keep reading—there's some very interesting stuff percolating under the heady odor of the PR department. We think of Intel as a technology company first and foremost, but the corporation is quite interested in other aspects of computing. Better technology isn’t enough these days," said Rattner. “What the individual values today is a... Read more...
