Oppo's Find X smartphone launched during the summer, and it had a very attractive design that eschewed the notch design that the iPhone X popularized (and was quickly followed by many others). Instead, the Find X got around the need for a notch by using a motorized, pop-up camera that hid away when not needed. A new version of that smartphone has been tipped by a TENNA (the Chinese equivalent of the FCC) listing, and it will have a feature that is a world first. Gigabyte is pulling the covers off some new gaming peripherals and other PC component hardware at Computex 2018. One of the products is the company's new AORUS RGB gaming RAM. The memory is a 16GB kit using a pair of DDR4 8GB DIMMs. It operates up to clock speeds of 3200 MHz with has timings of 16-18-18-38. Voltage is 1.2V standard and when XMP is enabled 1.35V is consumed. The DDR4 DRAM chips employed are Samsung B die parts and the sticks are fitted with a fancy looking symmetric high-efficiency heat spreader. Samsung has announced that mass production has kicked off for its new 32GB DDR4 SoDIMM for laptop computers. The RAM is based on 10nm-class production technology and is aimed directly at delivering PC-grade desktop performance for on-the-go gamers. Samsung says that the new RAM has significantly more capacity, supports higher speeds, and has lower energy consumption than its previous offerings (or its competitors). Corsair has unveiled Vengeance LPX memory, which it says is the world's fastest 4x8GB (32GB) kit. The kit consists of a quartet of 8GB RAM modules that are built with hand-sorted and extensively binned Samsung B-die ICs. Timings on the memory are CL19-26-26-46 at 1.5V. The memory kit is fully XMP 2.0 compliant, so users can get these high performance values with the click of a BIOS setting. A mere month after DDR4 was introduced for the first time on an AMD platform (Ryzen), the memory guidance organization JEDEC has decided to reveal its plans for DDR5. That's right: nothing can stop the progression of technology. As soon as we have something fresh to enjoy, the next big thing is right around the corner! This probably won't surprise many, as it has been a theme from one generation of DDR to the next, but DDR5 is going to be two times faster than DDR4, and of course more power-efficient (which should come in handy for mobile devices). When it comes to onboard RAM, Android smartphones often come fully stocked. These days, you expect at least 2GB of RAM on all but the most low-end devices. 3GB is common with most flagships, and some recently released Android smartphones come packing 4GB of RAM. Researchers at MIT have come up with a new network design that exploits cheap, power-efficient flash memory without sacrificing the speed that supercomputing applications enjoy from Random Access Memory (RAM). What's appealing about the development is that flash memory is about ten times less expensive than RAM and consumes about a tenth as much power. The downside is that flash memory is only about a tenth as fast, though by utilizing MIT's new system, several common big data applications could use flash memory just as efficiently as conventional RAM. Every few months, some huge chipmaker comes out with yet another advancement in memory technology that makes it simpler to shove more and more memory into tighter and tighter spaces. Intel’s latest chipset is Z97, and along with a growing mountain of motherboards sporting the new tech, HyperX (a division of Kingston) is releasing memory kits that support the chipset, too. All three of its FURY, Genesis, and Predator memory lines are getting a 9-series refresh, and the company said that it worked closely with motherboard manufacturers “to guarantee compatibility and the highest performance”. The DDR4 future looms increasingly large, as Crucial announced that it’s now sampling DDR4 server memory to channel partners who are working on platforms to support the latest generation of RAM. Micron Technology, one of the world's largest makers of DRAM and based out of Boise, Idaho, has started mass producing next-generation DDR4 memory that will support server systems based on Intel's upcoming Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family. As time goes on, we'll also see DDR4 memory appear in high-end desktops. For now, Micron is touting the improved power and performance benefits of DDR4 as being critical to the growing enterprise market. These next-generation modules will deliver a power improvement of up to 35 percent compared to standard DDR3, along with 4Gb-based DDR4 modules running at 2133 megatransfers per second (MT/s). Leading the charge is Crucial, a subsidiary of Micron, which is pushing to make DDR4 memory modules available to consumers by the end of the year. That doesn't mean you should hit the panic button and sell off your recently assembled system sporting DDR3 memory slots, but it does mean the next time you build a PC, it may sport DDR4 RAM. AMD has been marketing its own brand of memory for several months, and selling its own Ramdisk software as a performance-boosting option to customers to boot. That program has apparently been at least modestly successful, as the company is stepping up the campaign with a new type of Radeon memory and a new enthusiast class of product. The new Radeon RG2133 RAM is designed for low-latency operation (AMD claims a CAS latency as low as seven via overclocking profiles) and runs at 2133MHz at 1.65v.
