Apex Legends has only been out for two weeks, but the game may already soon receive a major update. Data miners have discovered the names of two possible future Apex Legends heroes and the names of their special abilities. “Octane” and “Wattson” may soon be added to the game’s limited roster. Octane will boast some sort of “Stimpack” ability. In Titanfall 2, “stims” quickly heal the user and boost their speed. Apex Legends' hero “Lifeline” is already a combat medic, so Octane’s ability may focus more on speed. Wattson will reportedly have some ability called “Tesla Trap”. Some have theorized that this character... Read more...
During AMD's earnings call earlier this week amidst all the talk of booming Ryzen and Radeon sales, AMD CEO Lisa Su took the time to point out that AMD was still in Ryzen's "early innings." AMD has more desktop Ryzen parts to ship in the coming months, and Ryzen mobile processors are set to hit retail in time for holiday shopping. A new leak shows what's going on with AMD's mobile parts, in what is alleged to be a Ryzen 5 2500U quad-core APU. This would be the first time a leak hinting at any details of the "Raven Ridge" Ryzen 2000 series parts has turned up. This particular Ryzen 2500U (the "U" designator is believed to be for mobile parts) chip is notable because it is claimed to feature... Read more...
The iPhone 8 is not due until this autumn, however, that has not stopped the Internet from leaking photos and information about the device. OnLeaks and tech blog Gear India have released renders of the iPhone 8 based on leaked CAD files. The images offer the most detailed look at Apple’s upcoming flagship to date.    The images assume that the iPhone 8 will be 144 x 71 x 7.7mm (roughly 6.57 x 3.03 x 0.3 inches). The iPhone 8 will therefore be slightly larger than iPhone 7, smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus, and thicker than both devices. The renders also depict an edge-to-edge OLED display without any front-facing visible buttons. The microphone hole and a dual-lens front-facing camera... Read more...
For months, there've been questions regarding just how secure Skype's encryption was. After Microsoft bought the VOIP company it began moving to a more centralized node structure that made it easier to scale the product but at the cost of intrinsic security. Now, it seems such concerns were valid -- new leaked documents from The Guardian allege that the NSA has an effective backdoor to all of Microsoft's online products including Skype, Outlook, and SkyDrive. While The Guardian doesn't have any slides to show this time around, it suggests that Microsoft has gone beyond the minimal amount of grudging cooperation mandated by law. The company has reportedly helped the NSA "understand" certain alias... Read more...
Last week the injunction which forced Wikileaks "off the air" was dismissed.   In the wake of this, the bank that first brought legal action against Wikileaks has given up - for now.Bank Julius Baer filed a brief note with a court in San Francisco Wednesday saying it would voluntarily dismiss its own case, while reserving the right to file it again in the future or pursue it "in an alternate court, jurisdiction, or venue."BJB's sudden move comes a few days after U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White reversed his earlier ruling (which pulled the plug on the Wikileaks.org domain) and said he was skeptical of the bank's ability to win the suit."This dismissal comes in the wake of our private... Intel has been slowly serving up information regarding the company’s upcoming Nehalem microarchitecture for many months now.  In our sneak peek at Nehalem and Intel’s 45nm High-K article from way back in March of last year, we outlined many of the details regarding Nehalem, but unfortunately we did not have any projected performance numbers to disclose.  Some news broke today, however, regarding a PDF that was inadvertently leaked by Sun Microsystems that not only mentions Nehalem, but has some performance data listed as well. “So how can Intel pull off such a massive performance boost over their current reigning champion “Harpertown” X5482 processor?  Consider the fact that Intel’s... Wikileaks was started with the intention of allowing whistleblowers to anonymously release government and corporate documents, "an uncensorable version of Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. " Of course, that only works if the site is reachable.A federal judge in San Francisco has shut down a Web site that posted more than a million government and corporate documents from whistleblowers and others alleging criminal acts worldwide.A permanent injunction was issued Friday by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. It was sought by the Swiss banking group Julius Baer after internal documents were posted to Wikileaks.org claiming to show the bank was connected to money laundering... Read more...
Seriously, is anyone surprised?Paying customers may not get their hands on Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 for weeks, but pirates can download the brand-new code for either today, according to searches at several BitTorrent trackers. The RTM, or release to manufacturing, versions of both operating systems can easily be found on BitTorrent tracker sites such as the Pirate Bay, which has made them available since yesterday. One torrent of Microsoft Corp.'s newest server operating system, Windows Server 2008, lists 42 "seeders," the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file, and nearly 190 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the... The latest build of Windows Vista SP1 was distributed to its beta testers last week.  Naturally it was also distributed to the likes of BitTorrent and other P2P file-sharing networks, though of course without Microsoft's permission.  Unlike the first build that was released, this was a .EXE file, not an ISO image.   Build 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655) weighs in at 684MB. However, Vista updates -- such as security patches and other hot fixes -- are normally packaged as .msu files, so the fact that the latest release is in .exe format may indicate that 6.0.6001.16633 is not a direct step toward a public release of SP1."Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format," a user identified... Guarding sensitive data is an extremely complex task and often requires a skilled IT team that stays on top of modern technology.  Of course, if your IT team does things like turning off firewalls in order to perform lengthy maintenance on servers (while leaving them connected to the internet), they might not really be a ‘good’ IT team to begin with.Sadly, this isn’t a hypothetical situation, but the true story of Verus, a Washington-based IT company that provides solutions for hospitals. Unprotected private data, which included names, addresses and social security numbers, soon became world-visible. At one point Google indexed the data. A woman searching for the details of a deceased friend... Read more...
