For the past few generations of iPhones, Apple has released Smart Battery Cases that allow you to extend the runtime of your device. The Smart Battery Case introduced for the iPhone 11 family featured a silicon case that wrapped around the device and an integrated battery that charged the device via Qi wireless technology. Apple is reportedly taking a different approach with the battery case for this year's iPhone 12 family. According to a new report from Bloomberg, this new battery case won't add any additional protection to the iPhone 12/iPhone 12 Pro, and is simply meant to give you boosted runtimes. And given that the iPhone 12 introduced MagSafe to the equation for charging... Read more...
When Apple launched the iPhone 12 family last year, the company revealed the usual suspects: a 6.1-inch iPhone 12, a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, the company also brought along a fourth member of the family: the iPhone 12 mini with a small (in this day and age) 5.4-inch display. Apple designed the phone to appease to smartphone users who have long cried out for a device that offered flagship performance, but was more pocketable like the 4-inch iPhone SE from many moons ago. The iPhone 12 mini still stands pretty much in a class of one when it comes to a modern smartphone with flagship performance and features across-the-board in such a small form-factor.... Read more...
Apple has just reported its earnings for fiscal Q1 2021, and they were nothing less than impressive. The company booked over $100 billion in revenue for the first time ever in company history. More specifically, it reported revenue of $111.44 billion versus a consensus of $103.28 billion. This represented a significant 21 percent increase year-over-year (YoY) for the company. Likewise, earnings per share (EPS) came in at $1.68 versus a consensus of $1.41; marking a 35 percent increase YoY. While Apple is headquartered in the United States, the company said that a 64 percent of its revenue was generated through international sales. “This quarter for Apple wouldn’t have been possible... When Apple launches new point releases for iOS and iPadOS, we usually ignore them as they typically have just a few minor improvements or feature additions. This time around, however, there's really a very good reason to shine a light on iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4. Apple announced that the new software updates address three zero-day security flaws that were discovered in its mobile operating systems. One exploit is a kernel level vulnerability (CVE-2021-1782) that would allow a malicious app to gain elevated privileges on a device. Two additional vulnerabilities (CVE-2021-1871 and CVE-2021-1870) are related to Apple's WebKit browser engine, and allow remote attackers to remotely execute code on... Read more...
If you have an implantable medical device, Apple is warning that you might want to rethink what accessories you purchase for your brand-new iPhone 12 (and where you place them). In a new support document that was uploaded to its website over the weekend, Apple confirms that the iPhone 12 and its supporting accessories can potentially cause electromagnetic interference with medical devices. More specifically, Apple points to interference with lifesaving devices like pacemakers and defibrillators. Previous iPhones have included magnetic coils as part of its wireless charging mechanism, but the iPhone 12 includes a greater number of more powerful magnetics to support MagSafe accessories (like chargers... The hits just keep coming for those that have bought a new iPhone 12 and are looking to tap into Apple's growing MagSafe accessory ecosystem. The company has just now confirmed that its 29W chargers, which were still on sale as recently as two years ago, are insufficient for charging two devices with the new MagSafe Duo wireless charger (which can charge an iPhone 12 and Apple Watch simultaneously). Before we even get into the latest charging fiasco with the MagSafe Duo, we must first tackle the absurdity of the notion that this wireless charger doesn't even come with a wall power adapter. A wall adapter is necessary for the product to work, and at $129, you would think that Apple would include... Read more...
Samsung and Apple are two of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, and it makes sense that they go back and forth in a competitive business tango. Recently, rumors circulated that the Samsung Galaxy S21 has been tapped for launch in January of next year. This early launch may have been selected so Samsung could attempted to steal some thunder from Apple’s late-arriving iPhone 12 series. Samsung could also have something else in store, though, with a rumored Samsung Galaxy Note20 Fan Edition, which could also launch next year. In September, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE launched at $699. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was a trimmed down S20 which kept premium flagship features, making... Read more...
When Apple announced its iPhone 12 family earlier this month, the company took the "courageous" step of removing not only the familiar EarPods from the box (no big deal to most), and the USB-C charging brick. At the time, the company patted itself on the back by stating that it was being environmentally-friendly by not contributing to additional e-waste, considering that that many people already have a gaggle of wall chargers littered around the house (or office). More discerning pundits, however, saw the move as Apple's way to cut costs and help offset the additional expense of the 5G connectivity that is standard across the iPhone 12 family. And one other curious wrinkle is that while... Read more...
Smartphones have never been all that easy to repair, but that hasn't stopped owners from fixing (or attempting to fix) broken screens, dead charging ports, speakers that don't make sound, and a host of other issues. There's nothing quite like the feeling of using a heat gun to melt some adhesive underneath a screen and then using a suction cup to pick up the front of a thousand-dollar smartphone to replace a broken part. Thankfully, we have guides on the internet, and very few are more helpful than the ones from the folks at iFixIt. They're at it again, too, as they've published a teardown guide for Apple's newly-released iPhone 12 and 12 Pro.  Interestingly, the two iPhones, released just... Read more...
One of the major selling points of Apple's new iPhone 12 models is support for 5G connectivity, which is offered on its entire lineup (iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max). But apparently it might come with a pretty big caveat for some people. A supposed internal sales document suggests 5G will not work if using dual SIM cards. It is not uncommon for people to have multiple phone numbers, which allows them to keep their work and personal lines separate from each other, but still use the same handset. Using two SIM card in a single device is simply more convenient than lugging around two smartphones, for those who need to have distinct phone numbers for whatever reason.... Read more...
Apple today opened preorders for its half of its upcoming 2020 smartphone family: the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro. Both smartphones come with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, 5G connectivity, and an A14 Bionic, but the difference is in the details. The iPhone 12 is the cheaper of the two, priced from $799*, and features an aluminum body, dual cameras (wide, ultra-wide), and 4GB of RAM to feed the A14 Bionic SoC. The iPhone 12 Pro, on the other hand, is priced from $999, features a stainless-steel body, triple cameras (wide, ultra-wide, telephone), a LIDAR sensor and 6GB of RAM. Apple iPhone 12 It should be noted that the iPhone 12 comes with just 64GB of internal storage, while the... Read more...
Apple seems to be rubbing a lot of people the wrong way with its iPhone 12/iPhone 12 Pro family that was announced this afternoon. While there are kudos all around for standard 5G connectivity, the faster A14 Bionic SoC, and improved cameras, Apple also took the USB-C wall charger and EarPods out of the box. And now, Apple is sure to leave many people scratching their heads with the revelation that it is essentially placing an additional $30 fee on top of the MSRP for certain models of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. Apple announced that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini will start at $699 in the 64GB configuration, while the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 will be priced at $799 for the same amount... Read more...
After months of leaks and speculation, Apple iPhone 12 family has finally been officially announced. Given how much ink has been spilled about the smartphones up to this point, most of you should already be pretty familiar with Apple has to offer. As in previous years, the iPhone 12 lineup is being split into two distinct families: the mainstream iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, along with the flagship iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12  These are the entry-level models in the new smartphone family, and they are both powered by Apple’s new A14 Bionic SoC. Apple’s new A14 Bionic SoC is a 6-core design that is claimed to be 50 percent faster than any... Read more...
Apple is holding its iPhone 12 event later today (1pm EST to be exact), but serial leaker Evan Blass has already provided us with the first official photos of the smartphones (along with a bonus). The images don’t really tell us what we didn’t already know, but they at least confirm the design of the smartphones along with the colors that they will be available in. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 will be available in Black, Blue, Green, (Product) Red, and White. We can also confirmation of dual rear cameras on the back of the smartphones, which is in keeping with last year’s best-selling iPhone 11. iPhone 12 Pro Moving on to the “pro”... Read more...
Apple announced earlier this week that it will be revealing its iPhone 12 family on Tuesday, October 13th. The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models are arriving later in the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are highly anticipated among the Apple faithful. Apple leaker Kang, who has a generally reliable track record when it comes to leaks, is giving us a final rundown of details for the upcoming smartphone family including pricing ahead of the official reveal. There aren't many surprises here compared to previous leaks, but we do get some revised pricing details for the cheapest member of the family: the iPhone 12 mini. iPhone 12 mini  5.4-inch OLED display A14... It looks as though we finally have a date for Apple's upcoming iPhone 12 keynote: October 13th. For those that have followed Apple's history of iPhone announcements, this upcoming virtual event is arriving roughly a month later than usual. As you might expect, we can blame the COVID-19 pandemic for disrupting global supply chains, which delayed production. Apple isn't giving many hints with its invite, other than to say "Hi, Speed". We take this to mean the new A14 Bionic SoC, which was first introduced with the 4th generation iPad Air. According to benchmarks that leaked over the weekend, the A14 Bionic offers roughly a 20 percent uplift in performance over the A13 Bionic in the iPhone... Read more...
The newest generation of Apple's iPad Air, announced just a couple of weeks ago, is armed with a custom A14 Bionic processor. Having debuted in a new iPad first, the same chip is expected to find its way into Apple's upcoming iPhone 12 family, rumored to range in price from $649 for the iPhone 12 mini with 64GB of storage to $1,399 for the iPhone 12 Max with 512GB of storage. As we await the launch, some leaked benchmarks give us a purported glimpse of the A14 Bionic's performance. Apple calls the A14 Bionic its most advanced chip ever with 11.8 billion transistors, with the promise it will deliver a "massive boost in performance." Or more specifically, Apple claims the chip's 6-core design offers... Read more...
We’re still awaiting invites to be sent out for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro virtual keynote address. The phones are expected to be announced sometime this month (with availability in November), but Apple is being tight-lipped about the exact reveal date. In the meantime, we have to rely on leaks to give us some insight into what Apple is planning, and the latest one seems highly plausible. The leak pertains to pricing for the entire lineup starting with the iPhone 12 mini and topping out with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. According to the leaker, @a_rumors1111, here’s how the full stack will play out: iPhone 12 mini  64GB $649 128GB $699 256GB $799 iPhone... Read more...
Were just a few weeks away from Apple's big unveil for its iPhone 12/iPhone 12 Pro family, which means that the leaks are starting to come in at a faster pace. In recent days, we're learned that the smallest of the new phones will adopt the iPhone 12 mini branding, which is a first for the iPhone family. Today, however, we're getting some insight into the available storage capacities for the new smartphones, and it isn't looking good for those that had hoped that Apple would end it stingy ways. Although Jon Prosser has been hit or miss on recent Apple leaks, he's is indicating with confidence that the baseline iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 will come with just 64GB of storage standard. ... The latest rumor making the rounds about Apple iPhone 12 lineup involves the naming strategy for the smartphones. Earlier this week, reputable Apple leaker L0vetodream alleged that Apple's smallest iPhone will not be called the iPhone 12 as previously rumored. Instead, he claimed that the device would be called the iPhone 12 mini. If this is indeed the case, that would mean that Apple would introduce an iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is a similar strategy to the company's iPad lineup which includes the iPad mini, iPad, and iPad Pro (along with the iPad Air). Further confirmation of L0vetodream's claims came today from Twitter user DuanRui, who posted... Read more...
Many analysts are expecting that the next generation of smartphones from Apple will represent a "mass upgrade" opportunity as customers look to upgrade older phones. The general idea is that many Apple customers have been sitting on the sidelines with older devices (i.e., first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 8, etc.) waiting for the next big thing in smartphones to arrive: 5G connectivity. However, AT&T Communications CEO Jeff McElfresh is throwing some cold water on that notion, and instead says that the launch of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro families might not make a much bigger blip than previous years. "I do believe that you will see many of the iPhone subscribers move to upgrade to... Read more...
Updated 9/8/2020 @ 2:15pm EST Apple's event has been updated with the title "Time Flies" which sees to suggest that this event will solely be about the Apple Watch Series 6, and perhaps the iPad Air 4. The original story continues below: We finally have an announcement date for Apple’s fall lineup of devices: September 15th. The event will take place exactly one week from today and will be livestreamed starting at 1pm EST. Apple typically announces its new iPhones earlier in September, but the COVID-19 pandemic threw a monkey wrench into those plans by delaying production and testing of certain critical components. Unfortunately, Apple isn’t providing many details on what it will... Read more...
