NVIDIA posted yet another impressive earnings report, a statement that grossly undersells the lede. Not only did NVIDIA crush its earnings, it recorded the highest quarterly revenue since the company's inception nearly three decades ago. Continued growth in gaming and the data center both contributed heavily to its $7.1 billion in revenue. That represents a sizable 50 percent gain from the same quarter a year ago, and a 9 percent jump from the previous quarter. Broken down by sector, NVIDIA saw record highs in more than half of its core businesses, including gaming, data center, and professional visualization. Those also happen to be its three biggest earnings (in that order). "The third quarter... Read more...
Players who are caught cheating in the extremely popular video game franchise Call of Duty could face much stiffer and broad consequences, which could include being banned from playing any of the future CoD releases. This is an attempt by Activision Blizzard to combat the enormous amount of players who find the need to not only cheat, but ruin the game experience for other players. Cheating in Call of Duty games is not new. In fact, during the Beta test of Call of Duty: Vanguard, it took cheaters little time to overrun it. Players of the popular game franchise have complained for years about how bad cheating has become and ruining the game, with little to no relief. Add into that fray the storm... Read more...
One of the most anticipated updates to Fortnite has arrived. What had fans so eager for this update is the collaboration with Naruto, for what figures to be one of the most popular crossover events to date (and there have been many). This is one of the most popular video games on the planet teaming up with the super-popular anime series Naruto: Shippuden. "Naruto Uzumaki, the number one most unpredictable ninja and Jinchuriki host of the all-powerful nine-tailed beast is ready—along with the rest of Team 7—to take you through to a Victory Royale!," Epic Games explains. Other members of Team 7 are coming along for the crossover event as well, including Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno,... Read more...
It wouldn't be much of a 20-year celebration of Xbox without some kind of Halo announcement, but worry not gamers, Microsoft didn't make that mistake. At the conclusion of its Xbox Anniversary Celebration livestream today, Microsoft announced the semi-surprise early launch of Halo Infinite Multiplayer Season 1: Heroes of Reach. We say "semi-surprise" because it was rumored this might happen, and it surely did. This is the free-to-play multiplayer component of Halo Infinite, which is scheduled to launch on December 8. But rather than make gamers wait until then, they can begin playing right now on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and Windows PCs. Microsoft says it will also be available... Read more...
If you on the hunt for one of Microsoft's  or Sony's latest consoles for someone in your life this holiday season, you might be in luck. Black Friday and subsequent weeks of holiday-related deals are looming and both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 restocks are coming soon. In late October, we ran down some leads on Xbox and PlayStation console drops which should still be on the way. However, it seems there is more to the story than we initially thought, as Walmart’s Black Friday ad has leaked with some interesting info. In a multi-day "dealebration" (deal-celebration) called “Black Friday Deals for Days,” both PlayStations and Xboxes will be available online only... Read more...
Looking for something to play this weekend that doesn't require a burly PC? Well we have good news—Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy is completely free right now, and once you claim it, the bundle is yours to keep forever. If you missed out on this series when each chapter came out, now is your chance to dive in at no cost. Assassin's Creed Chronicles is a 2.5D, side-scrolling spinoff of the main series. It's a three-part lineup developed by Climax Studios and published by Ubisoft, the first and most well-received being Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China. It takes place in 1525 as the Ming dynasty is beginning to crumble, and you play the part of Shao Jun, the last Assassin... Read more...
A listing at the FCC confirms ASUS is prepping a new ROG Strix Scar 15 gaming laptop with the model designation G533Z. Unfortunately, much of the good stuff is being kept confidential, though the listing does at least present a sketch of the laptop's underside. More interesting, however, is what the upcoming laptop is rumored to wield. Rumor has it the G533Z will be kitted with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti mobile graphics chip. Neither of those slices of silicon officially exist yet, though multiple leaks suggest they are coming. It's just a matter of when, and with ASUS seeking FCC approval on its upgraded ROG Strix Scar 15, hopefully they're not too far... Read more...
You may have noticed, but finding gaming hardware in stock is frustratingly challenging. That's true of graphics cards, it's true of consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S, and of course it's true of the PlayStation 5. Regarding the latter, the prospect of finding one in time for the holidays may have just gotten a little bleaker, with Sony having reduced production by a not-insignificant amount. The component shortage strikes again, and it's certainly not endemic just to Sony. Earlier this month Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said of the company's Switch console, "We can't produce enough to meet the demand we are expecting during the upcoming holiday season." The comment... Read more...
The highly anticipated handheld gaming PC from Valve was expected to start shipping in December of this year, in time for Christmas, to those hopped on the reservation system right off the bat. But 2021 isn't finished playing the role of the Grinch—a shortage of components (what else?) has forced Valve to delay Steam Deck shipments until next year. "We are sorry we won't be able to make the original launch date—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but material shortages have disrupted our shipping plans. We will continue working to improve reservation dates based on the new timeline," Valve said in a statement. Valve decided to enter into the extremely profitable... Read more...
It didn't take long for Valve to earmark its initial batch of Steam Deck handheld gaming PCs to those who plunked down $5 for a reservation, which will begin shipping in December. Any new reservations placed are now estimated to ship sometime after the second quarter of next year. There's a window of opportunity for competitors to fill the gap, and One-Netbook is hoping to do exactly that with its own line of handheld PCs. Additionally, it's seeking testers for its newest model, the One XPlayer AMD Edition. Handheld game consoles are immensely popular. Nintendo dominates the field with its lineup of Switch consoles, but handheld gaming PCs are gaining momentum. One-Netbook is one of the players... Read more...
The next major expansion for Destiny 2, known as the "Witch Queen" expansion, is still over three months away, but that's not to say that there's no content on the horizon. As it announced at the showcase in August, Bungie's living game is slated to be the biggest part of the company's 30th Anniversary celebration, with a tightly-packed parcel of content arriving on Guardians' doorsteps December 7th. The free anniversary event is going to include a new six-player activity called Dares of Eternity. Players can match with five others to "unravel secrets and [earn] rewards that commemorate [Bungie's] long and storied history." Apparently, the activity will be similar to Astral Alignment, and it... Read more...
It's frustrating to fathom that nearly a year after the latest generation game consoles launched to retail, they remain as difficult to obtain as ever. Unfortunately, that is not likely to change in the near future. However, if you're looking for a bit of positive news on the situation, it's this—Sony is purportedly stuffing multiple jumbo jets full of PlayStation 5 consoles and shipping them to retailers in time for Black Friday, and the overall holiday season. This amounts to a massive restock effort for the holidays, or at least 'massive' in terms of the shortage that keeps lingering on, and on, and on, and...you get the idea. What that amounts to is 130,000 PS5 units crammed into three... Read more...
Alder Lake is here, and in a sense it represents Intel's own 'Zen' moment, like the one rival AMD had several years ago (see our Alder Lake review for our full analysis). That's great news for consumers (we need Intel and AMD to keep pushing and leapfrogging one another). What's not so great is that as good as Alder Lake is, its hybrid architecture has broken compatibility with some games in Windows 11 and Windows 10, because of the way certain Digital Rights Management (DRM) schemes work. Patches are in the pipeline, though, and there's also a temporary workaround for early adopters. The issue here is a unique one. Intel's initial batch of Alder Lake CPUs are comprised of two different cores.... Read more...
Even Santa Claus and his merry band of elves won't be able to save Christmas if holiday cheer ultimately depends on procuring a Nintendo Switch game console. We already knew it was in short supply, but in a sobering update, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa essentially said the situation has gotten more "severe," prompting the company to downward revise its sales forecast. In an updated earnings report, Nintendo said it now expects to sell 24 million Switch consoles for its full fiscal year. On its own, that's not a bad number, but it represents a negative 1.5 million unit revision from Nintendo's previous forecast. Simply put, Nintendo conceded it is making fewer Switch consoles during the... Read more...
AAA video games have really ballooned in size over the last ten years, and chief among the offenders are your big open-world extravaganzas. Red Dead Redemption 2 comes in at nearly 120GB on PC, ARK: Survival Evolved is 115GB, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Odyssey tips the scales at 110GB. Another Ubisoft title is about to pack on some pounds with its latest update: Far Cry 6. The most-recent entry in the jungle combat simulator has you exploring a Caribbean island which is definitely not Cuba, and working to overthrow a sadistic dictatorship. The base install is relatively svelte at just 60GB in its largest incarnation (on PC), but there's a high-resolution texture pack that tacks on another... Read more...
Netflix officially announced its intentions to enter the extremely lucrative gaming industry this past July. Following up on that, Netflix yesterday tooks it is first step into the already very competitive mobile platform that will include five mobile games at the outset. Netflix will begin its mobile gaming journey on Google Play Store with five games suited for mobile-only play. Two of the games originated from the Netflix original series Stranger Things and developed by BonusXP. Those are Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game. The next two games, developed by Frosty Pop, are Shooting Hoops and Teeter Up. The last of the five games is Card Blast, developed by Amuzo and Rogue... Read more...
When you think of "video game piracy," you probably think immediately of PC games. That's not really a fair association, though; console game piracy has been going on as long as there have been video game consoles, and it's a bigger market than you likely realize. Perhaps not as big as it once was, though, as famed console hackers Team Xecuter are currently facing the long arm of the law. Team Xecuter, for those unfamiliar, was one of the largest and longest-lived creators of "circumvention devices," known more colloquially as "mod chips." These devices, whether hardware, software, or firmware, modified console game systems such that they would play copyrighted game content without verifying... Read more...
This past Summer, LG created a new product category with its UltraGear Gaming Speaker (GP9), though not entirely from scratch. The GP9 combines aspects of a soundbar with a portable Bluetooth speaker, and also serves as an external USB soundcard with a built-in Hi-Fi Quad DAC (ESS9038 Pro) to bring your headphones to life. It works with PCs, game consoles, and anything that blasts out audio through a Bluetooth connection. It also has a distinctive gamer aesthetic, or at least what LG thinks qualifies as one with the usual RGB lighting flare. But is it any good at everything or anything it's designed to do? That's what I was eager to explore when LG unveiled this device, after having recently... Read more...
Roblox took to Twitter to announce that its servers were finally back online everywhere. This followed a long weekend of rumors that the outage was perhaps caused by some gassy side-effect initiated by a free Chipotle "boorito" that players could claim in-game and redeem in real life. The server issues seemed to begin on October 28th as players began reporting outages across platforms. Roblox confirmed those reports and said it had identified the root cause and was working on a resolution. As of yesterday, Roblox reported on its Twitter feed that all servers were back online, and play should resume as normal. You can hear the collective sigh from parents everywhere. It did not take long for the... Read more...
Cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and blockchains are modern buzzwords amongst gamers, and whether you love them or hate them they are here to stay. Meanwhile, Ubisoft can't seem to keep itself out of the headlines lately apparently. And the company is back in the lime light, thanks to its latest earnings call where Ubisoft mentioned several times its involvement and investment in blockchain-based gaming technologies. Specifically, the fact that it'll be funding the blockchain gaming-focused company Animoca Brands, a self-proclaimed global leader in blockchain gaming. But what does it even mean to be marrying gaming with blockchains  and cryptocurrency anyway? On a very rudimentary level, the idea... Read more...
Cheaters never prosper, especially when they are being targeted by ransomware-laden files scattered about the internet. Whether or not comeuppance like this is deserved, Japanese Minecraft players looking for alternate accounts to cheat or circumvent bans are being infected by the Chaos ransomware variant in a ghastly way. Minecraft, owned by Microsoft, has become one of the most popular games in the last 12 years. However, with this level of popularity comes numerous issues, such as cheating across the 22 platforms on which Minecraft is offered. Thankfully, many of these cheaters eventually get caught and banned, but there are also ways around a ban to continue wreaking havoc on servers worldwide.... Read more...
Talk about spooky-good timing: Nintendo and Lego waited for Halloween to announce an expansion of the Lego Super Mario collection with a trio of new Luigi's Mansions sets. It will be a few months before you can actually buy them (drats!), but they are coming for some "ghost-catching fun" with a handful of iconic characters from the popular franchise. "All new sets come with their own series of unique challenges, giving fans a chance to dive into the world of Lego Super Mario with a Luigi’s Mansion twist and role play new storylines and challenges to collect as many coins as possible!," Lego says. The biggest and priciest of the three of the Haunt and Seek Expansion Set ($79.99). It includes... Read more...
