You can safely assume that motherboard makers will not be caught flat-footed when Intel's 12th Gen Core desktop processors based on Alder Lake arrive. There's plenty of work that goes on behind the scenes between CPU and motherboard players. Especially so with Alder Lake, I imagine, given all the new technologies. It won't be long now before we can run some officially sanctioned benchmarks with finalized Alder Lake silicon, assuming no last minute delays put a cramp in Intel's plans to release its next-gen CPUs before the end of the year. Alder Lake is poised to be an interesting launch for multiple reasons, one of which is that it supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Intel's upcoming Alder Lake launch will usher in the start of the DDR5 era in the consumer space, and then sometime next year, AMD will hop on board with its Zen 4 lineup. This is going to result in higher bandwidth memory products, with transfers (or 'speed' if you prefer to call it that) starting at 6,400MT/s. The added bandwidth could come at a cost, and not just a monetary one, but also paid for in heat. In late April, research firm TrendForce sounded alarm bells when it projected that soaring PC demand would mean bad news for PC DRAM prices. At the time, the company showed PC DRAM prices increases of 23 to 28 percent during Q2 2021, with an increase in the average selling price (ASP) jumping by as much as 23 percent. However, the firm is singing a different turn for its Q3 2021 projections. It now forecasts that PC DRAM prices will only increase by 3 to 8 percent quarter-over-quarter. We all know that bigger is better, right? At least in generalities, it's often true. More CPU cores help performance in multi-threaded workloads, while high frequencies boost performance in lightly-threaded tasks. With graphics, it's all about more as well; more shading resources, more ROPs, more VRAM, and a wider bus means more frames per second. About the only way more doesn't help is when it's the wrong kind of more, as in latency. If a monitor has a long response time, it can hurt your game play. AMD is out there living the good life right now. Zen has proven to be a formidable contender, it seems like a Zen 2 refresh is en route, and looking further down the road, Zen 3 will likely keep the party going. As it pertains to the latter, a new leak potentially sheds some light on what AMD has on tap, both for its upcoming CPUs and APUs. For the average user, 32GB of RAM is a lot (the sweet spot is generally considered to be half as much). Be that as it may, G.Skill is introducing a handful of new high capacity, high performance DDR4 memory kits consisting of multiple 32GB modules, offering a total capacity of up to a whopping 256GB. That might even be enough to satiate Chrome! It's certainly brag-worthy, though whether or not 256GB of system memory makes sense depends entirely on what kinds of things you are doing. It seems as though every few months we hear of a new semiconductor breakthrough from Samsung, and today is no different. The company just announced that it has built the world's smallest 8-gigabyte DDR4 DRAM chips ever, thanks to its second-generation 10nm manufacturing process (which Samsung refers to as 1y-nm). The 8Gb DDR4 RAM is claimed to have a 30 percent productivity gain over its predecessor, while boosting performance and efficiency levels by 10 and 15 percent respectively. AMD has risen in rank thanks to its Ryzen launch and is once again a competitive force in the enthusiast market, but the roll out has not been without some bumps in the road. Samsung announced today that it has begun volume production of its 8Gb LPDDR4 memory chips, with expected commercial shipments in 2015. The announcement is noteworthy for a number of reasons. First, one of the most important characteristics of a modern mobile device is its battery life, and moving to a new memory standard should significantly reduce the memory subsystem's power consumption. The DDR4 future looms increasingly large, as Crucial announced that it’s now sampling DDR4 server memory to channel partners who are working on platforms to support the latest generation of RAM. Last summer, Samsung started mass producing DDR4 RAM for servers and data centers, and in now the company is ramping up production in anticipation of a strong demand for the new generation of memory that will be paired with Intel’s forthcoming Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 products. Micron Technology, one of the world's largest makers of DRAM and based out of Boise, Idaho, has started mass producing next-generation DDR4 memory that will support server systems based on Intel's upcoming Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family. As time goes on, we'll also see DDR4 memory appear in high-end desktops. For now, Micron is touting the improved power and performance benefits of DDR4 as being critical to the growing enterprise market.
