Zen has proven to be a formidable contender, it seems like a Zen 2 refresh is en route, and looking further down the road, Zen 3 will likely keep the party going. As it pertains to the latter, a new leak potentially sheds some light on what AMD has on tap, both for its upcoming CPUs and APUs. All indications point to Zen 3 being on track for a release later this year. For the average user, 32GB of RAM is a lot (the sweet spot is generally considered to be half as much). Be that as it may, G.Skill is introducing a handful of new high capacity, high performance DDR4 memory kits consisting of multiple 32GB modules, offering a total capacity of up to a whopping 256GB. That might even be enough to satiate Chrome! It's certainly brag-worthy, though whether or not 256GB of system memory makes sense depends entirely on what kinds of things you are doing. It seems as though every few months we hear of a new semiconductor breakthrough from Samsung, and today is no different. The company just announced that it has built the world's smallest 8-gigabyte DDR4 DRAM chips ever, thanks to its second-generation 10nm manufacturing process (which Samsung refers to as 1y-nm). The 8Gb DDR4 RAM is claimed to have a 30 percent productivity gain over its predecessor, while boosting performance and efficiency levels by 10 and 15 percent respectively. About a week ago we talked a bit about the Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32GB memory kit that operated at 4,333MHz and claimed the title of the world's fastest 4x8 32GB kit. That title lasted only about a week for Corsair because G.SKILL has just launched a new, and even faster 4x8 32GB DDR4 RAM kit. Corsair has unveiled Vengeance LPX memory, which it says is the world's fastest 4x8GB (32GB) kit. The kit consists of a quartet of 8GB RAM modules that are built with hand-sorted and extensively binned Samsung B-die ICs. Timings on the memory are CL19-26-26-46 at 1.5V. The memory kit is fully XMP 2.0 compliant, so users can get these high performance values with the click of a BIOS setting. Move over, G.Skill, it looks as though another hardware manufacturer is looking to vie for the crown of world's fastest DDR4 memory. The new challenger is from Corsair, which has just unveiled its newest Vengeance LPX 16GB kit, which includes two 8GB DDR4 DIMM modules. AMD has risen in rank thanks to its Ryzen launch and is once again a competitive force in the enthusiast market, but the roll out has not been without some bumps in the road. There are two main issues working to undermine Ryzen. One is that gaming performance is not where many thought it would be, and the second is memory compatibility. Samsung announced today that it has begun volume production of its 8Gb LPDDR4 memory chips, with expected commercial shipments in 2015. The announcement is noteworthy for a number of reasons. First, one of the most important characteristics of a modern mobile device is its battery life, and moving to a new memory standard should significantly reduce the memory subsystem's power consumption. With the launch of Intel's Haswell-E processors and X99 chipset right around the corner, everyone aside from Intel itself has been previewing products that complement the platform. Most notably, this involves motherboard and memory manufacturers, with some choosing to remain mum in advance of the launch, with others happy to talk about what's en route. The DDR4 future looms increasingly large, as Crucial announced that it’s now sampling DDR4 server memory to channel partners who are working on platforms to support the latest generation of RAM. Last summer, Samsung started mass producing DDR4 RAM for servers and data centers, and in now the company is ramping up production in anticipation of a strong demand for the new generation of memory that will be paired with Intel’s forthcoming Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 products. Micron Technology, one of the world's largest makers of DRAM and based out of Boise, Idaho, has started mass producing next-generation DDR4 memory that will support server systems based on Intel's upcoming Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family. As time goes on, we'll also see DDR4 memory appear in high-end desktops. For now, Micron is touting the improved power and performance benefits of DDR4 as being critical to the growing enterprise market. Leading the charge is Crucial, a subsidiary of Micron, which is pushing to make DDR4 memory modules available to consumers by the end of the year. That doesn't mean you should hit the panic button and sell off your recently assembled system sporting DDR3 memory slots, but it does mean the next time you build a PC, it may sport DDR4 RAM. We spent a little time checking out the Technology Showcase at IDF13 and spotted a number of cool pieces of hardware on the show floor we thought you’d like to check out. Samsung says it's now mass producing what it claims is the most advanced DDR4 memory in the world. Built on 20nm-class process technology, Samsung's 16GB and 32GB DDR4 memory modules will find homes in enterprise servers and next-generation, large-scale data centers, the South Korean memory maker said. Intel’s Skylake processors won’t launch for some time (the company still needs to release Broadwell at some point, which won’t be out until sometime next year at the earliest), but according to a leaked roadmap slide, we can see some juicy details about Skylake. The chips will be built on Intel's 14nm process node (which we’ll see first on Haswell-E processors), and they’ll also feature AVX 3.2. Micron on Thursday introduced its new M500 solid state drive (SSD) with terabyte-class capacity, an ultra-slim design, and increased response times compared to previous SSD products, all at an "affordable price point." The M500 SSD will be sold to consumers, businesses, and system builders under the Crucial brand, and to OEM customers under the Micron brand. So, how "affordable" is it? The 960GB M500 will initially sell for less than $600. That's a chunk of change, for sure, but well under a buck per gigabyte (62.5 cents per gigabyte, to be exact). Lest anyone forget that Samsung dabbles in more areas than just displays, the technology guru has just begun sampling what it claims is the world's first 16GB double data rate-4 (DDR4), registered dual inline memory modules (RDIMMs), which at the outset are designed for use in enterprise class servers. Samsung said it's sampling both 8GB and 16GB DDR4 memory modules, which it produces using a 30nm-class process technology.
