Lots of Android fans who have pre-ordered a Pixel 4 smartphone are waiting in anticipation for the smartphone to ship. One of the new features of the Pixel 4 is Face Unlock, and Google designed face unlock in a way that many feel lessens the security of the device. Google has said that it will be issuing a software update to address the issue in the coming months. The problem that some have with the device is that face unlock will unlock the phone even if the user's eyes are closed. Not requiring a person's eyes to be open would mean that someone could pick up the phone and unlock it while the owner slept or while they were unconscious. Most face unlock-style features on devices, such as the... Read more...
Microsoft has launched the preview of the Project xCloud game streaming service. The xCloud preview opened yesterday afternoon and is available for gamers in the U.S., U.K., and Korea. The caveat is that players must be invited to the beta, and invites are going out now. The xCloud beta kicks off with streaming limited to Gears 5, Halo 5: Guardians, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves during the initial preview of the service. Microsoft's Kareem Choudhry, cloud gaming head, says that the xCloud test will allow Microsoft to test in a broader capacity with a range of gamers, devices, network environments, and real-world use scenarios. Over that last few years, OnePlus has earned a reputation for offering well-appointed, high-performance mobile devices that compete with other contemporary flagships, but with highly aggressive pricing. When we looked at the OnePlus 7 Pro back in June, or the OnePlus 6T before that, we declared both handsets leaders, in terms of value and performance. With the upcoming OnePlus 7T, which is due to start shipping in just a few days, OnePlus is trying to capture that status again. Looking at the OnePlus 7T’s list of features and hardware specifications, it appears to be a premium Android phone in every sense of the word. The device is built upon Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855+ mobile... Read more...
Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18999 (20H1) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. The software giant warns that as with all pre-release builds, the new Insider Preview Build may have bugs that cause issues for some users. Those who install Build 18999 (20H1) and then want to switch to the Slow or Release Preview rings will need to do a clean install on their PC. The most significant feature added in this update is for the Your Phone app. This app is on the current version of Windows 10 and allows Android phone users to send and receive text messages and get notifications right on their computer. Your Phone is a big time saver for those who don't type very quickly... Read more...
A dangerous zero-day vulnerability affecting at least a dozen different Android phone models is being actively exploited in the wild, according to Google's Project Zero team. Attackers who leverage the security flaw are able to gain full control of an affected Android phone. As of right now, no patch for the vulnerability exists (though one is being worked on). Google's own first- and second-generation Pixel phones are among the Android models affected by this. So are a spattering of Samsung Galaxy phones. So far, Project Zero has confirmed the issue affects the following models... Pixel and Pixel XL Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Huawei P20 Xiaomi Redmi 5A Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Xiaomi A1 Oppo A3 Moto... One of the big features of the upcoming Google Pixel 4 smartphone will be its Motion Sense gesture control. It's easy to get the idea behind what Google will be offering with the Motion Sense gestures, but it's better to see the gesture in action. A video has leaked that shows the gestures in action in different situations. The motion of the gesture is the same swiping a hand over the screen action in each instance but does do different things depending on what the phone is doing. For instance, waving a hand over the screen for the phone when the alarm is going off silences the alarm. Dismissing with a gesture is much better than having to fumble in the dark for your phone and swipe the screen... Read more...
Google is getting some of the apps that are already running on Pixel devices ready for the upcoming Pixel 4, which will debut at an event to be held on October 15. Another app update has landed adding new features for Pixel 4 users, with at least one Pixel user receiving an update to the Google Recorder app. The Google Recorder app allows users to record audio from the microphone of the smartphone, and that is pretty much all it does. The update that recently landed allows the app to transcribe audio recordings automatically and enables the user to search audio recordings. The images seen here come from Google Play and show what is changing in the app. The app screenshot with the dark background... Read more...
At today's Surface event, we were all expecting for Microsoft to announce the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro X and perhaps get a glimpse at its dual screen tablet (now officially called the Surface Neo). What we weren't expecting, however, was a "one more thing" announcement of the Surface Duo. Surface Duo is a new Android-based smartphone that was developed with the cooperation of Google on the software side. The device doesn't appear to be running any recognizable flavor of Android, and is likely using Microsoft's own take on the world's most popular operating system. The device itself looks like a shrunken down version of the Surface Neo thanks to its... Read more...
Sometimes new features that are coming to Android devices leak accidentally ahead of their official announcement. This is what has happened with the Google Personal Safety app that the search giant itself accidentally rolled out early. The leak confirms that car crash detection is coming, but it's unclear at this time if the Personal Safety app will come to all Pixel devices or if the app will only land on the coming Pixel 4 smartphone. XDA-Developers reports that the integrated Emergency Information app on the Pixel 2 XL was updated this week to version 1.0.271601625 as "Personal Safety." The description in the app store has confirmed that car crash detection would be made available for Pixel... Read more...

Android and iOS gamers who are fans of the Mario Kart franchise can now download Mario Kart Tour on both Android and iOS devices. Some fans of the game already had it installed on their Android and iOS devices ready to go. The catch was that the servers needed for the game to work weren't live. The game does require a Nintendo account to play, so before you download, go and set one of those up, assuming you don't already have one. It was announced before that the game would feature Mario and other characters racing on tracks that are based on real-world cities. The game will also include classic Mario Kart courses for players to enjoy. Maps based on cities will rotate every two weeks, while the... Read more...

Malware has been a common problem within the Google Play Store, and two apps that have run a malicious adware scheme have been the latest to get the boot. The apps have been raking in the cash for their authors, but have consequently been putting the people who have downloaded them through living hell. The first of the app is called Sun Pro Beauty Camera, and it amassed over 1 million downloads since it first appeared on the Play Store. The second app, Funny Sweet Beauty Camera, which was created by the same developer, garnered in excess of 500,000 downloads. Not only would the apps display intrusive ads that were hard or nearly impossible to close out (even when the apps in question were... Read more...
ASUS recently sent us its brand-spanking-new ROG Phone II and we are in the process of evaluating the handset for a full review. We hope to have that posted within the next few weeks. In the meantime, we have some preliminary benchmarks and initial analysis to share, starting with the observation that this is the fastest Android phone we have ever tested. More on that in a moment. Before we get into the initial performance data, let's take a moment to talk about the gaming phone category, the ROG Phone II Ultimate Edition, and the specs. Gaming phones are still a somewhat new and niche category, albeit a growing one. ASUS threw its hat into the ring last year with its first generation ROG... Read more...
