Sony is offering US buyers a new and less expensive model of its Playstation3 gaming console, and cutting the price on its existing model, to try to spur sales. The current model, sporting an 80 GB hard drive, will now retail for $500, down from $600. The new model, already available in Europe and Japan, has a 40 GB drive and will sell for $400."I think the educational curve is starting to be broached with the general consumer," (SCEA President) Tretton told Reuters in an interview, when asked about his expectations for the PS3 through the end of the year. Sales of the PS3, which has a built-in Blu-ray drive for playing high-definition DVDs, have lagged those of Microsoft Corp's  Xbox 360,... Read more...
It's astrophysics, not rocket science, actually. Frustrated with the complexity and expense of running computations on big arrays of supercomputers, Dr. Gaurav Khanna of the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth has assembled 8 Playstation 3s into a cluster, loaded it up with Linux, and used it to perform massive calculations seeking to prove the existence of so-called gravity waves. Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity postulates that such waves exist, but it's never been proven. He also says that the console's Cell processor, co-developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba, can deliver massive amounts of power, comparable even to that of a supercomputer -- if you know how to optimize code and have... HotHardware could tell you all about the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. We could bring you the news from there that Sony announced a device that would let users record and store live television on their Playstation 3 game console. We could mention that programming saved in this fashion could then be transferred to a Playstation Portable for viewing, if you so desired. We might point out that the device is capable of handling high-definition broadcasts as well.  We might continue with an examination of the comparitively lackluster sales of the Playstation 3 compared to its competition, the X-box 360 and the Wii.  We might assess how the added functionality of turning the Sony console into... Sony's powerful gaming console with the semi-lackluster sales, the Playstation 3, is being upgraded to include an 80 gigabyte hard-drive in South Korea. It's currently being offered with a 60 gigabyte drive. It's unclear whether that means the more powerful offering is destined to be offered elsewhere anytime soon. "Increasing capacity for models is one of the options," said Satoshi Fukuoka, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We make such decisions depending on the needs of the market, and every country is different." The 80-gigabyte version will start selling June 16 in South Korea, where online games are enormously popular and broadband connections are more... Read more...
Sony has announced that they've discontinued production of the $500 20GB model of their Playstation 3 console, as had been rumored for a while now. With the Playstation 3 having fewer sales than the other next generation consoles in the past few months, demand for the 20GB model has been especially low. "My thoughts? The industry buzz had always been that Sony was offering retailers better margins on the 60GB unit, hence the reason for the wildly disproportionate retail orders. As far as consumers went, if you were dropping $500 on a PS3, you might as well drop $600 and get more hard drive space and wireless networking all built in."... Read more...
DigiTimes reports that Sony's latest Playstation 3 game console is experiencing a fair amount of issues ranging from overheating to a lack of proper resolution scaling. Although some users are having trouble in terms of the unit being properly cooled and in some cases even having the unit turn on, the largest problem appears to be a lack of the console being able to upscale 720p games up to 1080i. Those gaming with an HDTV which supports 1080i and not 720p will be forced to watch their games at a mere 480p until Sony can provide a solution. Fortunately, Sony does have a solution for the lack of systems in the retail channel as a second batch of Playstation 3 consoles will be hitting stores... Read more...
This seems to happen with every next-gen console launch, but things are getting ridiculous with regard to Playstation 3 pricing and availability. This article on CNN Money states that the PS3 is even scarcer than originally predicted. "Gamers knew getting their hands on a PlayStation 3 was going to be hard last weekend, but they probably had no idea it would be this hard. Sony had said going into the game console's launch it would ship 400,000 units to North America. But retail checks by analysts show the actual number of PS3s on store shelves was less than half of that. American Technology Research's P.J. McNealy, in a note to investors, said there were just 125,000 to 175,000 PS3s in stores... Read more...
Now that current and next generation consoles are equipped with processing power equal to a high end PC, we're able to do more than just simply play games on these devices. Now you can actually put your console to good use while its sitting idle, as Stanford's Folding@Home project may soon be available for the PS3(once the PS3 is out, of course). Folding@Home is a program which uses spare CPU cycles to simulate the folding of proteins, in an attempt to help find cures for many of todays worst disease, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The Playstation 3 version of F@H will also contain some interesting graphical enhancements as well. "The network hopes to apply the new... Read more...
Digitimes has reported that Chinese media are confirming Asustek Computer has been shipping production Playstation 3 gaming consoles in small volume since the beginning of July. The first consignment should result in roughly 4 million units in total with a significant amount remaining to ship before the console officially launches on November 11. This flies in the face of rampant rumors the last few months in which the maturity of the console was called into question and delays were claimed to be absolute. Fortunately for those dying with anticipation for this item, we'll all have the chance to have a Playstation 3 well in advance of the holidays. "After the first batch of PS3 shipments from...
