Nintendo is fairly good at keeping secrets, so much as that is possible in the internet era, so it is not surprising that we have heard very little about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 since it was announced at E3 this past June. There just have not been many substantial leaks. In the absence of such things, however, Nintendo has shared some new new images of the upcoming game. What Nintendo in Japan has shared really amounts to a behind-the-scenes look at some of what goes into developing these worlds and landscapes. Or as the Google-translated text refers to them, they are "stage production" images. "Stage production is the creation of background graphics such as the terrain, sea,... Read more...
If you've had your eye on the Nintendo Switch Lite, then we've got some good news for you from Amazon and GameStop. Nintendo's newest portable console just launched a few months ago, and discounts are hard to come by on the popular device. However, both retailers are offering a $25 promotional offer if you purchase a Switch Lite. In the case of Amazon, you'll purchase the Switch Lite at its regular price of $199.99, but you can enter the code UUDDLRLRBA at checkout to qualify for a free $25 promotional credit. Unfortunately, you can't apply it directly to the cost of the Switch Lite at checkout, and it will instead be emailed to you within 7 days of your purchase shipping.... Read more...
Nintendo wants to sell a bunch of the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite game consoles. However, it won't resort to cutting the price of the hardware to spark momentum. And the fact that Nintendo wants to continue selling the consoles for years to come is good news for fans. At a recent Q&A session, president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the pricing strategy and how the profitability of the hardware might increase. He was specific that Nintendo wants to sell the consoles at its current price for as long as possible. There are no plans to reduce the cost at this time, according to the exec. He also noted that profitability could fluctuate depending on the quantities produced in the future.... Read more...
Tecent, one of the world's largest gaming companies and technology firms, has yet to permeate the US market in the way that it wants, which is one of the big reasons why it partnered with Nintendo earlier this year. A key part of that effort is to "learn the essence of making console games" from a company that knows a thing or two about releasing hit titles. Nintendo is not just adept at making hit games, it has discovered the secret to creating booming franchises around iconic characters, like Super Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong, to name just a few. This is perhaps best exemplified in Super Smash Bros., a wildly popular brawler where many of Nintendo's characters appear in the same game. "What... Read more...
Nintendo Switch gamers or those with Switch gamers on their Christmas shopping list will want to check out these latest console and accessory deals. If you have any Pokemon fans on your shopping list, there's a new special edition Nintendo Switch Pikachu & Eevee Edition bundle; and Amazon is offering a trade-in deal. At Amazon, the special Pikachu & Eevee bundle sells for $426. Amazon is offering to take your normal Nintendo Switch with the Neon Joy-Con controllers and give you a $176.37 Amazon gift card for the trade. Nintendo just reported its earnings for Q3 2019, and the company had some good news on the hardware sales front. If you recall, Nintendo introduced the cheaper and lighter Switch Lite during the quarter, which has resulted in a massive uptick in sales. According to the Japanese gaming giant it sold 4.8 million Switch consoles during the quarter, which represented a whopping 50 percent increase year-over-year. We can attribute that sales momentum due to the introduction of the Switch Lite, which is priced at $199 compared to $299 for the standard Switch. Nintendo sold 1.85 million Switch Lite consoles and 2.85 million Switch consoles during the quarter. As of September 30th, Nintendo... Read more...
If you are like me and are a child of the 80s and 90s, then you probably have fond memories of the Nintendo Game Boy. As one of the first truly portable gaming consoles on the market, the Game Boy allowed us to toss in 4 AA batteries and have a few hours’ worth of escapism in games like Tetris and Super Mario Land without being tied to the TV. Nintendo's Game Boy lived on for quite a few generations, and its legacy still resides somewhat in the current generation Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. But for those that want to call back to the earlier, simpler times of the original Game Boy, there's a new device that's coming to the market from Analogue. Analogue is already a familiar... Call it one small step for PlayStation 4 owners and one giant leap for gamers, as Sony has opened the door for cross platform gameplay. Or shall we say, opened it a bit wider—Sony actually relented to Epic Games around this same time a year ago by allowing an open beta enabling cross-play in Fortnite between the PS4 and Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. At first, Sony was resistant to the idea, citing the PS4's supposed superiority over other platforms as the reason why. Sony also admitted at the time that it was not a technical barrier preventing it from embracing open play, just that the "PlayStation [4] is the best place to play." Sony would later backpedal by saying "enabling... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch Lite has been a surprise hit with gamers as a successful follow-up to the original Nintendo Switch (which itself was quite the blockbuster at launch). The Switch Lite is a more robust device that ditches the detaching Joy-Cons, kickstand and ability to dock with a TV. However, gamers do get a smaller and lighter device, a slightly smaller display with greater pixel density, and a $100 price cut (making it $199). Now, the folks at 8BitDo are looking to build on the Switch Lite hype with the new 8BitDo Lite controller. Like the portable game console that it will be paired with, the 8BitDo Lite is diminutive in size and brings with it most of the functionality that... Read more...
Apple has always held a vice grip on its App Store, and from its inception, only approved apps that meet the company's set of rules have been allowed to enter. Up to this point, getting around this meant having to jailbreak your iPhone. Well, not anymore—iOS developer Riley Testut has made available an alternative app store called AltStore that does not require jailbreaking your handset. It officially launches this Saturday, September 28, but he is offering up a preview straight away. It is compatible with even the latest versions of iOS, including iOS 13.1. Whether or not a future update breaks compatibility remains to be seen, but for now, it works. What's interesting about AltStore is... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch Lite launched to retail a few days ago, and a subsequent teardown analysis gives hope Nintendo may have addressed a Joy-Con drift issue that can affect the original Switch and the more recently revised version. We also get to see what's involved in cracking open and performing a DIY repair on the new model. In case you have not been following, here's the deal—Nintendo released the original Switch console in 2017 to much fanfare. It was lauded for its dual approach to gaming, as it can be slid into a dock to game on the big screen or played on the go with its integrated display. Then last month, Nintendo released a revised version with better battery life. The Nintendo... Read more...
Android and iOS gamers who are fans of the Mario Kart franchise can now download Mario Kart Tour on both Android and iOS devices. Some fans of the game already had it installed on their Android and iOS devices ready to go. The catch was that the servers needed for the game to work weren't live. The game does require a Nintendo account to play, so before you download, go and set one of those up, assuming you don't already have one. It was announced before that the game would feature Mario and other characters racing on tracks that are based on real-world cities. The game will also include classic Mario Kart courses for players to enjoy. Maps based on cities will rotate every two weeks, while the... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch Lite was just released this past Friday, and it's already a pretty nice bargain compared to the original Switch. The original Nintendo Switch is priced at $299, while its "Lite" counterpart comes in at only $199. However, a new deal today over at Rakuten (via seller GamerCandy) has the console for $199 -- its regular price -- but you can add the coupon code "SAVE15" at checkout to take 15 percent off the price. That brings your total down to $169 with free shipping and no tax (depending on what state you live in). The new Nintendo Switch Lite has a 5.5-inch display compared to 6.2 inches on its bigger brother and it weighs in at just 0.61 pounds. It's smaller in... Read more...
Another ROM site is facing legal action from Nintendo, which is suing over "brazen and mass scale infringement" of its intellectual property (IP) rights. Filed by Nintendo of America, the lawsuit alleges the ROM site served up hundreds of thousands of illegal copies of Switch games, and half a billion 3DS games. "Defendants reproduce, distribute, monetize, and offer for download thousands of unauthorized copeis of Nintendo's video games. This includes games for nearly every video game system Nintendo has ever produced including hundreds of games for its recently released Nintendo Switch," the lawsuit states. The site is ROMUniverse, and according to the lawsuit, it offers a premium membership... Read more...
You all had better watch out, because Blizzard is bringing its top team shooter over to the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo's September 4th Direct broadcast opened with the news, in fact. After previous leaks and whispers of a potential Overwatch Switch port -- especially after an Overwatch-themed Switch case briefly appeared online -- a port seemed inevitable, if slightly late. Now that Overwatch Switch is just around the corner, what kind of performance can we expect? The same day of the Direct reveal, Blizzard employee Nazih Fares took to Twitter to provide the performance information. Overwatch on Nintendo Switch targets a stable 30 FPS in both docked and portable modes, and plays... Read more...
Nintendo has already brought somewhat of a VR experience to its Switch console with the Labo VR kit (as shown above), but if you are hoping for a somewhat better implementation, you might be in luck. Well, maybe. A recently published patent design by Nintendo shows a design for a VR accessory that appears to slightly different than the Labo VR kit. It's also somewhat similar. Nintendo applied for the patent in February 2018, and it was published on August 22, 2019. The patent application describes a "3D image display system and 3D image display device," and there are accompanying design images. Here's a look at some... The images above depict a design whereby the user does not strap the VR accessory... Read more...
Nintendo has filed a patent that turned up in a patent database in Japan, for new Joy-Con controllers that might make it much more comfortable to game on the go or at home. The new controllers are hinged, and the front section can fold down to make the typically flat controllers more ergonomic and comfortable to grip and control. The patent art shows controllers where the left side folds below the thumbstick in the top section, and the right side folds just below the buttons. The patent indicates that the controller could be folded that way when attached to the Switch console or when removed. It appears that about three-fourths of the folding section moves while the other fourth of the section... Read more...
There has been a rumor that Overwatch would be heading to the Switch, and during the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast, it was confirmed to be true. Overwatch Legendary Edition is in fact bound for the Switch, arriving on the hybrid game console on October 15 in North America. Eager fans can preorder the game now. "Become the vibrant, powerful heroes of Overwatch! Line up the perfect shot using Nintendo Switch’s built-in gyroscopic motion controls, or engage the opposing team with the analog control sticks," Nintendo says. Switch players will be able to hop in and have access to 31 heroes on 28 maps. But it is the motion controls that could potentially set the Overwatch experience on the... Read more...
Sometimes games that are classics in other countries aren't titles we ever get to play here in America. One of the games that launched over two decades ago was promised for the States and never came here is an RPG from a company called Onion Games, and it is called moon. This time around, the game is being ported to the popular Nintendo Switch platform. The game is hailed as a sort of anti-RPG looking at themes in many RPG games like stealing supplies from strangers and killing animals for XP. The original launch for the game was 22 years ago on the original PlayStation. Over the years since that launch, English translations of the game have started and stopped for various reasons.... The next game to come to the Nintendo Switch is going to be a hot one. Many believe that SuperHot will launch on the Nintendo Switch, and the game will likely be announced tomorrow at Nintendo Direct. Dataminers were the first to find information about the upcoming release. “SimonTimer” discovered that SuperHot for the Nintendo Switch had received an update on Friday, August 16th. However, the game is not currently available on that console. You might be kicking yourself for having recently purchased a Nintendo Switch console, only to find out Nintendo is now shipping revised models with longer battery life. D'oh! The easiest solution is to return your Switch and purchase a newer SKU, but if a retailer is giving you grief, Nintendo may lend a helping hand. Users on Reddit report being able to exchange a recently purchased Switch console based on the 'old' hardware with a new model, free of charge. "Called to ask about the possibility of sending in my launch day Switch to get the battery upgraded (long shot of course) and they said they could only exchange for the new model if it was purchased after July 17th. They also told me it... Read more...
