For a long time, the only place to get Nintendo games and characters was on a Nintendo game console. However, Nintendo has been bringing some of its popular characters and properties to mobile devices with games like Super Mario Run and Pokemon Go. It's been a while since we've heard anything new from Nintendo on the mobile game front, but that is changing with Dr. Mario World. Dr. Mario World will launch for download on Android and iOS devices on July 10, 2019. Gamers can pre-register for the game on both devices now. Dr. Mario World is a puzzle game that sees Dr. Mario trying to eliminate viruses. Players have to match capsules with viruses to make them disappear. All the player has to do is... Read more...
There is something strangely cathartic about seeing an old piece of hardware that has suffered the fate of time and neglect, get restored to its original glory (or close to it). Maybe on a psychological level, this plays to our recognition of our own mortality. Or maybe it's just the nostalgia. Whatever the case might be, there is a video making the rounds of an old, beat up Nintendo Game Boy being lovingly restored, and it's worth taking a coffee break to watch. First released in 1989, the original Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld console that predates the Nintendo Switch by nearly three decades. It was a hugely popular system for its time, selling over 1 million units in the US alone during the... Read more...
While there's plenty of talk about a new cheaper Nintendo Switch on the horizon, for those that want a game console right now, the original is still a damn fine system. The deal currently applies to the following gaming consoles: Nintendo Switch 32GB with Gray Joy-Con Nintendo Switch 32GB with Neon Red/Neon Blue Joy-Con Nintendo Switch Pikachu & Eevee Edition with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! + Poké Ball Plus  When you add either of the consoles to your cart, you'll then be given the opportunity to add a game for free with... Yes A lot of gamers were hoping that Nintendo would be rolling out some new Switch hardware at E3 2019 as rumors had suggested. Sadly, Nintendo has now confirmed that there will be no new hardware at that event. However, something else interesting about the Switch has surfaced recently that allows gamers to get more performance out of the existing Switch hardware. With the Switch being a hybrid system, game designers have to design games around docked and undocked performance modes. Inside the Switch is an NVIDIA Tegra processor that changes its clock speed depending on if the Switch is in docked or undocked mode. Hackers have found a way to gain access to change the clock speed of the Tegra... Read more...
Over the past month or so, we've been hearing lots of rumors concerning at least two follow-ups to the Nintendo Switch. Earlier this week, reports indicated that a Nintendo Switch Lite would launch in June with a more attractive price point than the $299 original. Today, however, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa made it clear that a June launch is out of the question. "We have no plans to announce that at this year's E3 in June," said Furukawa. He also added that "[We are] always working on new hardware and we will announce it when we are able to sell it.” The Nintendo Switch has proven to be popular with gamers, partly due to the fact that it is a hybrid system that allows you... There is an odd veil of secrecy surrounding Mario Kart Tour, the upcoming mobile port of sorts that will see Mario and his friends (and enemies) hit the pavement on smartphones and tablets. Nevertheless, while information is few and far between, we now know at least one additional thing—there is closed beta headed to Android next month. The close beta is only being made available on Android, which is interesting. Why? When Nintendo released Super Mario Run, one of its first smartphone games, Apple iOS device owners were able to play while their Android-wielding brethen could only watch in envy. It was not until three months later that Super Mario Run strolled over to Android. It seems Nintendo... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch is one of the fastest selling consoles of all time. As of December 2018, Nintendo had sold 32.27 million Switch consoles. Could a successor prove to be just as successful? Rumor has it that Nintendo will release a “lite” version of the Switch by the end of June and a a slightly beefier iteration by the end of 2019. The Nintendo Switch “Lite” will be smaller and less expensive than the current console. It is reportedly aimed at “casual gamers”. The newer Switch would still be able to plug into a television, but it would be more portable. One source hinted that the smaller Switch contains new hardware that is “different from the original”.... Read more...
For most people, the thought of playing Super Mario Bros. on a Commodore 64 probably never occurred to them, for a number of reasons. The biggest one, of course, is that Super Mario Bros. was never made available for the best selling PC of all time—it's an NES game. However, the thought did occur to developer ZeroPaige, who made a ROM of the classic game, but unfortunately Nintendo is shutting down the party. ZeroPaige spent the better part of a decade—seven years, to be exact—developing a nifty port of Super Mario Bros., in the form of a ROM that is playable through C64 emulation software on a modern PC. While the gameplay appears to stay true to the original, however, it's... Read more...
Long before anyone played Angry Birds and Temple Run on a tablet or smartphone, and way before the Switch dazzled us with Breath of the Wild, there was an 8-bit handheld console called the Game Boy. Perhaps you remember playing it when you were a kid. If so, welcome to middle age. Time sure does fly, and though it's hard to fathom, your memories of sticking cartridges into the original Game Boy are now up to three decades old. The original Game Boy debuted in Japan on April 21, 1989, meaning the handheld just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Its birth in North America came shortly after, on July 31 of the same year, while a European launch did not happen until a year later, on September 28, 1990.... Read more...
Nintendo's gamble that gamers would be interested in a hybrid console that both connects to a big screen TV and can be played on the go paid off in a big way. The Switch, despite being relatively under powered compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, has proven immensely popular. Surely there will be another iteration at some point, and perhaps two more. According to a Japanese-language report at Nikkei, Nintendo is prepping a more affordable version of the Switch for a release this fall. There are not a ton of details to go on, but the Switch Lite, as we will refer to it, is said to be more compact. The smaller design will up the portability factor, as is the focus, though according to the... Read more...
Nintendo continues to do very well with the Switch console. The console received a Switch Online update in April that added some cool new games to the mix, including Punch-Out and Super Mario Lost Levels. Rumors have also hinted that Nintendo might be getting a 3DS-style redesign with a rugged exterior. Nintendo has now announced that the latest firmware update is out for the Switch and it brings the system software to version 8.0.0. Along with the move to a new whole number increment also comes some new features that Switch fans have wanted for a while now. Perhaps the most noticeable change with the update is enhanced sorting features of the "all software" list. Those games can now be sorted... Read more...

Nintendo released its Labo line of products last spring, and the cardboard kits are meant to provide interactive build-and-play experiences. Nintendo has unveiled the new Switch Online NES Collection title updates that are landing for April. We reported early yesterday that Nintendo is preparing to unleash two new variants of its hugely popular Switch gaming console this summer. The original Nintendo Switch is unique in the fact that it features a hybrid design that allows it to be used as a portable console, or docked for use with a large-screen television. One of the new variants is said to be a slightly more powerful version of the current Nintendo Switch, while the other will be an even lower-priced budget entry. Eurogamer -- which has a long track record of having an inside track on unreleased consoles -- has posted some additional information on the latter model. According to the publication, it... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch has been an incredibly popular game console that has sold very well for Nintendo. The Japanese gaming giant confirmed in January that it had sold over 32 million Switch consoles as of the end of 2018. Now, a new report claims that there are two new versions of the Switch in the works. The report claims that one of the new Switch models will have "enhanced features" and will aim directly at avid gamers. However, the Wall Street Journal report claims that the enhanced Switch won't be as powerful as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X consoles. That would seem to indicate no support for 4K resolution gaming, but we don't know that for sure. Multiple sources from within the supply chain... Read more...
Nintendo has been doing well with the cool Labo Toy-Con kits that it launched last year. Nintendo has now announced a new addition to its lineup: the Labo VR Kit. These kits allow gamers to build cardboard accessories for the Switch that turn it into a VR gaming platform.  The Starter Set + Blaster offers a headset that appears to have lenses inside for the Switch and a cardboard blaster. After buying that starter set, gamers can add a couple of expansion sets. Expansion Set 1 includes a camera, and an elephant add on. The elephant is interesting with images showing the Joy-Con controllers inside the cardboard trunk; that trunk appears to move as part of the associated game. Expansion... Read more...
Well, this is one spectacular bombshell. Reports are making the rounds that Microsoft and Nintendo are working together bring some Xbox games directly to the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Switch -- these would be straight ports of existing titles. But that's not all, it appears that the two companies are going all-in with a Project xCloud partnership that would allow Xbox Game Pass subscribers to stream games to a Nintendo Switch. This would allow for truly cross-platform gaming that would be less dependent on tying you into one particular hardware ecosystem, but instead rely on streaming games to a wide variety of devices as long as you have a fast and stable internet connection.... One of the best sources of information that gamers in North America have had from Nintendo for many years now has been Reggie Fils-Aime. Fils-Aime has served 15 years at Nintendo of America, 13 of those years have been as President and COO of the company. Nintendo has announced that Fils-Aime will be retiring and that his last day with Nintendo will be April 15. Reggie Fils-Aime Nintendo has also announced that Bowser will be taking over as President of Nintendo of America. That's not the bad guy Bowser from the Mario franchise; rather the new president will be Doug Bowser. He has been the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo of America since 2016. Bowser is credited with... Read more...
As we reported back in January, Nintendo has no plans to cut the price on its popular Nintendo Switch hybrid gaming console anytime soon. Talks of a revised console with faster internal components have also been pushed aside. So, the next best thing that the company can do is to offer some fresh bundles with popular games to keep things fresh. Nintendo has a new Switch bundle on deck, and this time the company isn’t offering up a free game. Instead, it’s throwing in a free $35 eShop gift card, which can be used towards the purchase of games directly from the console. One of the big upsides to purchasing games digitally – especially for a system that can be... Read more...
Way back in the day all anyone wanted for Christmas was a Nintendo Entertainment System. If you were lucky enough to get that NES, you undoubtedly wanted the Super Mario Bros. cartridge to go with it. Hoards of those video games were sold, and while we didn't know it at the time, the game would go on to be one of the most beloved video games ever made. While you could find the standard retail boxed version of Super Mario Bros. in just about any store that sold video games, there were a pair of incredibly rare versions of the game made. These versions are so rare because instead of being sealed in shrink wrap as the games usually were, there were sold in boxes sealed with a sticker. Only two of... Read more...
When it comes to smartphones and tablets, Nintendo has a relatively small footprint in mobile, with only a few titles under its belt. That's part of why it was so exciting when Nintendo announced a year ago that it would be releasing Mario Kart Tour to smartphones by March 2019. It's been a long wait for fans who have been eagerly anticipating the title, and unfortunately, they're going to have to wait a little bit longer. The good news is that Mario Kart Tour is still bound for smartphones, and barring another delay, it's still slated to ship in 2019. However, Nintendo is now anticipating a summer release. The extra time will be used to improve the quality of the game. "In the smart device business,... Read more...
Nintendo is doing very well with its Switch console after having a very rough time with the previous generation Wii U. Late last year, the Switch was crowned the fastest selling game console of this generation. With sales going so well for Nintendo, any idea of price cuts or new hardware seem unlikely, something confirmed by Nintendo's President recently. Nintendo has made its latest earnings release public, and in that release, the gaming company confirmed it had sold 32.27 million Switch consoles as of December 31, 2018. Nintendo moved 9.41 million Switch consoles in Q4 2018 alone. Software sales for Nintendo boomed in Q4 2018 thanks to holiday shopping; for that three month period Nintendo... Read more...
