It may not happen in my lifetime, but it sure seems like we trending towards a world where the majority of automobiles on the market will be capable of driving themselves. In preparation for that day, Amazon on Friday confirmed it is acquiring Zoox, a California-based startup that has been designing an autonomous vehicle from the ground up. "Zoox is working to imagine, invent, and design a world-class autonomous ride-hailing experience," said Jeff Wilke, Amazon’s CEO, Worldwide Consumer. "Like Amazon, Zoox is passionate about innovation and about its customers, and we're excited to help the talented Zoox team to bring their vision to reality in the years ahead." Over the past week, we've seen some pretty hot deals on Amazon hardware just in time for Father's Day. One of those discounted devices was the Echo Show 5, which is Amazon's [current] smallest Alexa-powered device with a display. Amazon has the Echo Show 5 on sale for $59.99 with free shipping, which is already a great deal and represents a $30 discount off its normal price. But today for just $5 more, Amazon is throwing in a Blink Mini compact indoor camera. Blink is now a subsidiary of Amazon, so it should come as no surprise that a bundle deal like this would be offered. The Blink Mini is a small, cube-shaped camera with a stable base that is capable of recording 1080p video in both... Read more...
Amazon has earned itself some well-deserved bragging rights for putting a stop to what ranks as the largest distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack ever, and by quite a bit. According to data divulged by Amazon, it halted a DDoS attack that peaked with a "previously unseen volume" of 2.3 terabits per second in February 2020. The attempted attack leveraged a compromised Connection-less Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (CLDAC). It also resulted in three days of "elevated threat during a single week" before it subsided. Amazon shared the details in its latest AWS Shield Threat Landscape report (PDF), in which it notes that the "largest known DDoS attacks are UDP reflection attacks." CLDAP... Read more...

Over at both Amazon and Best Buy, you can snag two Echo Show Premium 10.1-inch HD smart displays with Alexa integration for the price one right now, which effectively saves you $229.99. That is a heck of a bargain, and the timing could not be better—as calls for social distancing and self-isolation persist, gadgets like the Echo Show are handy ways to keep in contact with family and friends, no matter how far away they might be. Amazon Echo Show - Buy one, get one free (Amazon and Best Buy) "Echo Show makes it easy to stay in touch. Make video calls... Read more...
Amazon is halting the use of its facial recognition software by law enforcement officials, in hopes that the "one-year moratorium on police use of Rekognition," as the technology is called, will give Congress enough time to impose regulations ensuring its "ethical use." It's not clear if that simply means additional license will not be sold for one year, or if Amazon will also prevent its Rekognition software from functioning within police departments that already paid for it. Either way, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wants to see a bigger commitment from Amazon over what it deems a "threat" to civil rights, not just in the here and now, but beyond the one-year ban. "This surveillance... Read more...

The Amazon Echo Look camera is a standalone device that leveraged machine learning and artificial intelligence to give users fashion advice, making it easier to get dressed in the morning. Amazon has announced via an email sent out to owners of the Echo Look that the camera and its app will no longer function after July 24, 2020. The good news is that Amazon is offering a free Echo Show 5 to owners of the defunct device. The free product should go a long way to making Look owners feel better about Amazon killing their product, but not offering refunds. As for how the Echo Show 5 will replace fashion advice provided by the Look, Amazon says that it has been integrating features from the Look into... Read more...
AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3990X isn’t for everyone, but it is no doubt an impressive piece of silicon that doesn’t really have a rival in the High-End Desktop (HEDT) market. The processor comes with an MSRP of $3,990, which is well beyond the budget of most enthusiasts out there that are used to paying a few hundred bucks for a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor. However, there are many that will gladly pay that price of entry for the performance that it delivers. Luckily for those in the market for the Threadripper 3990X, Amazon is currently running a sale that knocks a considerable $540 off the price, bringing it down to just $3,449.99. That big savings could be put towards... Read more...
We’re always on the lookout for a great tech deal, and one just came across the news desk today on a popular smartphone from Apple. In this case, we’re talking about the iPhone XS Max, which is Apple’s flagship offering that first launched back in 2018. While the iPhone XS Max is coming up on two years old, it’s by no means “over the hill” when it comes to performance thanks to its A12 Bionic SoC, which is still highly competitive with even today’s Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 865 flagships. When the iPhone XS Max first launched, it was priced from $1,099 for the 64GB model, and topped out at $1,449 for the 512GB model. Once the iPhone 11 Pro family... Read more...

Crucible was developed by Relentless Studios and is a team-based action shooter that is driven by the choices players make. Each match in the game is a fight for survival and control. Players have to fight against their enemies to survive, while fighting what the planet throws their way. The game will force players and their teammates to work together to take down alien creatures, capture objectives,... Read more...
It’s been a while since we’ve seen any deals on Ring products, or Amazon’s Echo family of smart speakers, so it’s quite convenient that we’ve come across a deal this week that combines the two. The primary deal involves the Ring Stick Up Cam, which normally has a retail price of $149.99. However, with today’s deal, Amazon is selling the device for a new low of $84.99. But it doesn’t end there; Amazon is also throwing in a free Echo Dot with your purchase. The Echo Dot carries an MSRP of $49.99, but can typically be had for around $30 on sale, or even as low as $20 during Amazon’s crazy Prime Day festivities. Whatever the case, it’s still an... Amazon's entry into the home brewed hardware space has resulted in some competitively priced products with tantalizing features. It's been an interesting ride up to this point, and it just got more intriguing with the introduction of three "all-new" Android tablets, including the Fire HD 8, Fire HD Plus, and Fire HD 8 Kids Edition. The allure of the Fire HD 8 line is relative affordability. Whereas you're looking at spending $399.99 and up on Apple's iPad mini (barring a sale), the latest generation Fire HD 8 starts at $89.99. Apples and oranges to an extent (or Apple and Android), as we're looking at two different platforms and ecosystems, and different performance levels. But in terms of affordability,... Read more...
Back in early March, Ring launched its Video Doorbell 3 and Video Doorbell 3 Plus complete with 5GHz Wi-Fi support, improved motion detection, and Pre-Roll technology (which shows 4 seconds of video prior to an alert being triggered). Today, Ring has unveiled an update to its entry-level Video Doorbell. Like the original, the new Video Doorbell can be run off your existing wired doorbell connection, which makes setup a breeze. Or you can rely on the removable battery pack for power, which will last between 6 months to 12 months per charge depending on the number of alerts you receive per day. It can be easily removed and recharged via an included microUSB cable. With regards to specifications,... Read more...
After several years of development, Amazon Game Studios is close—very close—to launching Crucible, a free-to-play team-based player-versus-player (PvP) action shooter. It will go up against some stiff competition, namely Overwatch and Valorant, the latter of which is currently being tested in a closed beta and due to release this summer. Crucible will land on Steam in a couple of weeks, on May 20. In anticipation for the upcoming launch, Amazon Game Studios posted a 'First Look' video of Crucible to YouTube. It's only 1min40sec long, but depicts some actual gameplay footage and tidbits about what players will do in the shooter, as well as what characters will be available. Have a... Read more...

For those on a budget during the coronavirus outbreak, Amazon is offering monthly payments on many products as well. When it comes to testing for COVID-19/coronavirus and helping to stop the spread of the virus, Amazon is now taking matters into its own hands. This comes after Amazon took fire last month for terminating Chris Smalls. Smalls had organized a warehouse worker strike in Staten Island, New York over what he considered to be inadequate safety measures that were put into place by Amazon. In internal meeting notes that were leaked to the public, Amazon general counsel David Zapolsky berated Smalls, proclaiming, “He’s not smart, or articulate, and to the extent the press wants to focus on us versus him, we will be in a much stronger PR position than simply explaining for the umpteenth... One way to pass the time while you are hunkered down in your abode is to kick back and fire up a playlist of your favorite jams. Or get up and shake your rump—dancing is good exercise, after all. Either way, Amazon is making it cheap and easy to do by offering its Amazon Music Unlimited streaming service free for three months. This is quite different that what comes bundled with your Amazon Prime membership (assuming you have one). One of many perks of Prime is the standard Amazon Music subscription. It's a nice add-on, but also limited—it 'only' serves up around two million songs. That sounds like a lot, but it is not nearly as fleshed out as services like Apple Music and Spotify.... If there's one day that Amazon shopping fans look forward to each year, it's Prime Day, when the discounts are enormous on all sorts of items on the Amazon online store. With coronavirus ravaging so many people and hampering logistics around the world, Amazon has been pushing shipping times back and promising to focus on critical items that consumers really need, such cleaning and medical supplies, as opposed to other convenience type items. As a result, unfortunately, anyone waiting for Prime Day 2020, to pull the trigger on something they've been eyeing on Amazon, may have to wait a little longer, as Amazon has reportedly postponed Prime Day until at least August. The online giant also... Read more...
Amazon may have started out primarily as a seller of books, but it was not long after that it also got into the business of video games, among other things. From those humble beginnings, Amazon has experienced exponential growth. It is also a major player in the cloud space, and it will apparently leverage its related assets into taking on Google Stadia and GeForce NOW in the cloud gaming sector. Of course, Stadia and GeForce NOW are two different beasts—Stadia is sort of a hybrid distribution and game streaming platform (players have to purchases title through Stadia to play them on the platform), whereas GeForce NOW is more like having a gaming PC in the cloud to play your existing library... Amazon is really finding itself under immense strain as it tries to cope with an influx of orders amid the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. Not only are shipping times slipping for various products that it sells via its website (for both Amazon and Marketplace platforms), but its inventory has been obliterated when it comes to household staples like toilet paper and hand sanitizer.  In a bid to ease some stress on its shipping channels, Amazon is giving customers a financial incentive to choose slower "No-Rush Shipping" (when available) rather than take advantage of fast and free Prime shipping. For example, let's take the popular AMD Ryzen 5 3600, which is currently selling... Read more...
