Essential certainly didn’t get the reception the company dreamed it would when it launched the Essential Phone last year. The device essentially flopped with only 5,000 units sold on Sprint from launch through late September 2017. That hasn't stopped Essential from plugging away and trying to woo buyers with seemingly continual price cuts and new color choices. Three new Essential.com exclusive colors have been announced including Ocean Depths, Copper Black, and Stellar Gray. And now Amazon is getting its own exclusive color called Halo Gray (which you can purchase here for... Read more...
The jailbreaking community is alive and well, and people frequently install "unauthorized" software on their smartphones and tablets once they’ve cracked the bootloader. This practice is often frowned upon by device OEMs (especially Apple), but it is legal to do so under an exemption in Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), however, wants to extend the exemption to include another hot segment in the consumer electronics market: smart AI speakers. That would means that owners of devices like the Amazon Echo, Google Home, and... Read more...

Back in June 2016, Amazon introduced its "Prime Exclusive" phone program, which offers Prime subscribers attractive smartphones with budget pricing. The catch, however, is that you have to put up with lockscreen offers and ads to take advantage of the favorable pricing. For example, the fourth generation Moto X has a suggested MSRP of $400, but it is offered for $280 unlocked as a Prime Exclusive. Likewise, the LG Q6 falls from $300 to $180 as a Prime Exclusive. Luckily for those that have already purchased a Prime Exclusive phone, or those that are looking to purchase one in the future, there... Read more...
Amazon absolutely dominated Q4 2017 with massive sales numbers for the Christmas and holiday shopping season. Amazon has a history of releasing some rather hilarious Super Bowl commercials, and this year is no different. Amazon’s Alexa AI voice assistant is at the forefront of this year's commercial, and in this case, the digital voice assistant seems to have lost her voice. Amazon's energetic CEO, Jeff Bezos, is visibly concerned about losing one of his most famous stars and inquires if any potential voice actors have been lined up as a replacement. After a half-hearted confirmation that Amazon has a rather deep bench of voice talent, the commercial starts cranking up the laughs. We won't give away... Read more...
The smart speaker market is booming with estimates pegging usage in America at about 39 million users combined for the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Amazon is the leader in the segment and the company has announced that its Alexa voice assistant that is embedded in the Echo devices now has gained ability for the device to send text messages to other users. Previously Echo could send a text-based message to a user, but the sender and the receiver both needed to be running the Alexa app and have an Echo device. The new SMS feature will only work on Android smartphones and is only available... Read more...
Google has carved out a significant chunk of the smart home speaker market with its Home speaker line, which now accounts for nearly a third of all installed home automation devices, according to data and analysis by Consumer Intelligence Researcher Partners (CIRP). Just as importantly, Google has managed to shrink the gap in the market place between its speakers and Amazon's Echo line. No small feat, Amazon essentially created the smart home speaker market when it unexpectedly launched its first Echo product over two and a half years ago. It was an immediate success, and continues to be today.... Read more...
Amazon has been teaming up with smartphone manufacturers to offer devices at a significant discount under the Prime Exclusive program. That program allows users to buy the phones at a lower price than full retail with the caveat being that the user will have to see ads on the lockscreen. One of the devices that is offered on that program is the Moto G5 Plus. However, the device has a security flaw that could be exploited by anyone that has physical access to your smartphone. The first step of this newly discovered exploit is to touch the fingerprint scanner of the device. If the fingerprint of... Read more...
It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Apple's HomePod AI smart speaker, but it appears that calmer waters lie ahead. Apple announced today that the HomePod will be available in stores beginning February 9th. The HomePod was originally supposed to launch in December 2017, but Apple couldn't meet that original deadline. “We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers," said Apple in a mid-November statement. "We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and... Read more...

Fans of Amazon's Alexa digital assistant tend to take advantage of it the more convenient it is to utilize, so it's been a bit frustrating for Android users who've had very few good options (if any at all) up to this point. Actually, things are still not perfect, but at least we're getting somewhere with a recent update to the app that is now on Google Play (hit the source link below). HTC's U11 was one of the rare Android smartphones with Alexa baked-in In this new update to its Alexa Android app, Amazon has added the ability for full Alexa Voice integration on all Android devices.
