Well, that was fast—there is already a discount available on Apple's newest generation 10.2-inch iPad, the one that was just announced earlier this week and is not yet shipping. While not yet available to bring home, Amazon is accepting preorders for the latest iPad models, and you can snag a 10.2-inch iPad with Wi-Fi connectivity and 128GB of onboard storage for $399.99. The savings amounts to a 7 percent discount (save $29.01) over the $429 MSRP. While we have seen Amazon (and other retailers) offer price cuts on iPad models, it is a bit unusual for there to be a deal on a brand new version before it even starts shipping. It is the only the 128GB Wi-Fi model that is on sale, albeit all... Read more...
Apple today announced the new Apple Watch Series 5, which looks very much like its predecessors -- especially the Series 4. However, the big change with the Series 5 is the addition of an always-on display (finally), which is made possible with Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxid (LTPO) technology. So instead of having to raise your wrist to provoke the Apple Watch to turn on, you can always see the time and all of your complications no matter what you're doing. Apple says that even though the display is now always visible, the battery life remains at 18 hours. It also features a built-in compass (alongside a new compass app). Apple Watch Series 5 starts at $399, while the LTE models will be... Read more...
If you're in the market for a new tablet, Best Buy is running some rather remarkable deals on consumer and professional tablets from Apple. Both the standard 9.7-inch iPad and the 11-inch iPad Pro are available with a steep discount with free shipping or free in-store pickup. First up is the 9.7-inch iPad, which normally rings in at $329 for the 32GB model. However, Best Buy is currently selling the upgraded 128GB iPad for an even lower price of $299 (available in Silver, Space Gray or Gold). The regular price for the 256GB SKU is $429, so this represents a $130 discount. Amazon is currently selling the 32GB iPad for $249, but this deal from Best Buy is a far better deal in our opinion --... Read more...
When it comes to the tablet market, Apple gets the bulk of the attention (and market share) with its iPad family. While numerous Android OEMs have simply given up on the form-factor in favor of large-screen smartphones, Samsung remains a staunch support of dedicated tablets. After launching the Galaxy Tab S5e earlier this year, Samsung’s upcoming entry into the fray is the Galaxy Tab S6. Real life shots of the tablet have been spied, and it shows a device with a 10.5-inch display and dual cameras on the rear (something that isn't yet the norm for a tablet, but quite common on smartphones). Powering the tablet will be Qualcomm's potent Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM.... Read more...
Amazon Prime Day may be a few weeks away, but you do not need to wait until July 15th to get a good deal. A variety of products are available at discounted prices this weekend. You can pick up a discounted Vizio Soundbar, iPad, Roomba Bot Vaccum, or even a $8 wireless charger on Amazon. Perhaps the most intriguing deal this weekend is for a wireless charger. You can currently purchase a Seneo 10W Fast Qi Wireless Charging Pad for $8.49 USD. The charging station is compatible with a variety of devices and can reportedly charge 15% faster than other comparable products. The VIZIO SB2920-C6 29-Inch 2.0 Channel Sound Bar is on sale for $78.99 with free shipping. The sound bar features Bluetooth,... Read more...
One of the drawbacks to using Siri on iPad and iPhone devices is that the digital assistant dominates the display when invoking the AI feature. It does not work that way on Mac systems—Siri appears in a smaller window so that you can see everything else on the screen. Well, with the introduction of iPadOS, Apple could port the same functionality over to its iPad lineup, it was so inclined. Not only is having Siri appear in a smaller window more convenient, it is also more functional, as it allows users to drag and drop items. As of this moment, though, Siri only appears and functions that way in macOS. However, Apple's VP of software engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted that such a change... Read more...
Retailers never miss an opportunity to draw in customers with tantalizing discounts, and Memorial Day weekend presents yet another occasion for a deals event. As such, there are bargains to be had on a wide range of electronics, everything from big screen TVs with smart features built in, to tablets and games. We've rounded up some of the more interesting ones. If you are looking to upgrade your TV (or adopt a new one for your home), you will find several options. Some of the best deals happen to be in the 55-inch range. That represents a noticeable bump in size versus a 32-inch TV, without the price hikes that accompany 65-inch and larger sets. Here are a few worth checking out... RCA 55-inch... Read more...

Spring is in the air, which means that we’re starting to hear more about the next version of iOS that powers iPhones and iPads. Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is scheduled to kick off on June 3rd, but a new report is already shedding some light on what we can except in iOS 13. The first addition is something that has been requested from Apple fans for a long time: a true systemwide dark mode. Apple has already introduced dark mode with macOS, so it’s only natural that the company would want to extend this feature to iOS. According to 9to5Mac, the feature won’t be enabled by default, and will instead be accessible via the Settings menu. A... Read more...
Reason number one not to leave your electronic gadgets within unsupervised reach of a toddler is because, at best, they'll turn into a sticky mess. At worst, however, they will find a way to break it. Reason number two is because they might lock you out of the device...for five decades! We are not being facetious (maybe a little), that exact thing recently happened. Evan Osnos, a staff writer for The New Yorker, posted a hilariously disturbing image to Twitter. Apparently his toddler tried multiple times to unlock his iPad, until finally the security feature locked it down for 25,536,442 minutes. In case you are wondering, there are 525,600 minutes in a regular year (not counting Leap Year).... Read more...
We've been hearing rumors of merger between Apple's iOS and macOS apps for a while now, but a new report suggests that that efforts to make this possible are well under way. In fact, these so-called universal apps could be made available to the public starting in 2021. This reporting comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, he in particular seems to have the pulse on the inner workings at Apple. The program has been underway using the codename Marzipan, and would see apps originally designed for the iPhone and iPad make their way to macOS devices. According to the report, Apple will initially only allow iPad app developers to port their apps over to Macs thanks to a new SDK. It's expected... Read more...
Thing's aren't all rosy in the iPhone realm today. Apple has been forced to go back to Qualcomm modems in the German market to get around a sales ban. In addition, consumers are upgrading their smartphones on a much longer upgrade cycle than in years past. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a research note that predicts what we might see from Apple on the iPhone and iPad front for 2019 that could spark an upgrade craze from customers. Kuo says that the 2019 iPhone line will include a 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch OLED model and a 6.1-inch LCD model -- the same as the current crop of devices. Kuo expects that the followup to the iPhone XR will get 4GB of RAM and that all models will use a frosted... Read more...
Apple fans love rumors, and one of the best places to find hints of upcoming hardware is within new developer versions of iOS. The iOS 12.2 beta is currently available and one developer dug into the code looking for references to future products. Not surprisingly, iOS developer/guru Steven Troughton-Smith found references in the code to four new iPad models. The models referenced include "iPad11,1"; "iPad11,2"; "iPad11,3"; and "iPad11,4". The iPads with the 11,2 and 11,4 designations called out in the code are rumored to be cellular versions with the other two offering Wi-Fi only. All we have to go on right now is speculation, but the thought it that these iPad designations are for new iPad... Read more...
Remember when analysts went bonkers over tablets and predicted they would take over the world, shoving PCs aside as we all scrambled to replace our desktops and laptops with slates? Yeah, that didn't happen (though tablets did help spur a thriving 2-in-1 market). Not surprisingly, even Apple is seeing relatively soft tablet shipments. In an effort to spur more tablet sales, Apple may be readying a new iPad mini device. A report in China cites sources within Apple's supply as saying Apple will unveil a fifth generation iPad mini in the first half of next year. Then after that, the same sources say Apple will launch a couple of larger, entry-level iPad devices. This is interesting from a couple... Read more...
We’re well into the Christmas shopping season, which means that retailers are throwing all kinds of discount at popular tech gear to boost sales. While robust discounts on Apple hardware like iPhones isn’t typical, the “standard” iPad is regularly on sale. The base iPad has an MSRP of $329 and can typically be had on sale for around $300. However, both Target and Amazon are currently selling the tablet for $80 off, making it just $249. This matches the short-lived Black Friday discounts from last month and represents the lowest price we’ve seen for the iPad. The $249 pricing is available for two of the three available colors for the iPad –... Read more...
Apple really annoyed the snot out of people around this time last year with its condescending and downright annoying commercial for the iPad. In it, a young girl can be seen going about her day working on her iPad performing varying tasks. Towards the end, she's laying on the grass outside her house typing away with the iPad's keyboard accessory when a woman asks, "What are you doing on your computer?" The girl responds by saying, "What's a computer?" The ad was so controversial and so hated that Apple removed it, and it sparked a entire wave of memes mocking the company (and unfortunately, the actress in the ad). The point that Apple was [apparently] trying to make is that the iPad transcends... Read more...
It appears that the chilly relationship between Apple and Amazon has thawed a bit more. The two companies have announced that Amazon will now sell iPhones, iPads and other Apple products directly and via authorized sellers in the Amazon Marketplace. Products that will now be available for sale on Amazon include the new iPhone XS/XS Max, iPhone XR, iPad Pro family, Apple Watch Series 4, Mac desktops and laptops, Apple TV, and Beats headphones. It should be noted that this is the first time that Amazon has ever sold [new] iPhones and iPads directly to customers, although the retailer has previously sold Mac computers. iPhones and iPads that have been available for sale in the past have either been... One of the most peculiar tech stories that we have reported on in recent memory had to deal with a helium leak involving a newly installed MRI machine at a medical facility. Helium leaked in significant enough volumes to cause iPhones, iPads and even Apple Watches to fail throughout the building. At the time, it was suspected that all of the Apple devices were using a similar microelectromechanical system (MEMS) oscillator, which was made even more apparent given that Android devices within the building were completely unaffected. We first reported on the incident in mid-October, and yesterday, the original poster on reddit, Erik Wooldridge (harritaco), provided an update.  It... Read more...
With October nearing its end and November just around the corner, that means everyone will be gearing up for the holidays. It also means that Black Friday is creeping up fast on those looking to score a deal. Retailers will be wasting no time and ads for this year's deals have already started to leak. Costco's Black Friday ad has turned up, and it looks like this year will be big for tech fans looking for new TVs, game consoles, laptops, and tablets for themselves or as Christmas gifts. One of the best deals Costco's ad has is on a Dell XPS 13 4K UHD touchscreen laptop with a $500 discount. That machine has an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. However, the... Read more...
Doctors and researchers have used MRI machines for over forty years to create detailed images of internal organs and tissues. But do MRI machines play well with other modern inventions? One Reddit user recently reported that an MRI machine zapped every iOS and watchOS device in his facility. Redditor u/harritco remarked that he had experienced the “most bizarre issue I've had in my career in IT”. A medical facility had installed a new MRI machine and by the end of the day every iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch had been disabled. More than forty people were affected by the issue, but no other devices, other than iOS devices, seemed to be impacted. All Android devices and other electronics... Read more...
Apple's planned TV service has been long talked about and long delayed. In 2015, reports indicated that the delay in bringing the service to market had to do with negotiations for local programming. Last month, a report surfaced that claimed Apple's insistence on staying away from programming with sex and violence was threatening the service. Many wondered how Apple planned to lure in subscribers, in a Netflix world, with bland original content. The answer is that Apple reportedly has no plans to sell subscriptions to its service, for now. People who claim to be familiar with its plans say that Apple plans to give its original programming away to all Apple device owners. That means anyone who... Read more...
One of the things that annoys lots of people about Apple and its products is the company's reliance on proprietary charging tech. While many tablets and smartphones use a standard USB port for charging, Apple relies on the proprietary Lightning port. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stepped up on the eve of Apple's event with some last-minute predictions. One of his predictions is that Apple will be ditching the Lighting connector on the 2018 iPad Pro and moving to the more common USB-C interface. Kuo isn't clear if that USB-C port will be usable for anything other than charging the iPad Pro. According to the analyst, the move from Lightning to USB-C will be the main update for the new...
