With the launch of Intel's Haswell-E processors and X99 chipset right around the corner, everyone aside from Intel itself has been previewing products that complement the platform. Most notably, this involves motherboard and memory manufacturers, with some choosing to remain mum in advance of the launch, with others happy to talk about what's en route. G.SKILL is the latest to jump on the early-preview bandwagon, and in doing so reveals seven different sets of DDR4 RAM it'll be selling. As Haswell-E and X99 in general target the enthusiast market, and features the use of a quad-channel memory controller (like X79 did), G.SKILL is going to be initially selling kits that include only 4 or 8 DIMMs.... iBuypower is offering an AMD-based system in its Chimera 4SE line, which is designed to give users serious gaming performance without a wallet-busting price tag. The Chimera is part of iBuypower’s Signature Series, which includes iBuypower’s highest-priced and most powerful gaming systems, like the Revolt and Valkyrie. The centerpiece of the Chimera 4SE FX Ultimate is an all AMD-based CPU/GPU combo. The processor is a 4.7GHz (5.0GHz with Turbo), eight-core AMD FX-9590, designed with overclockers in mind. It’s cooled by a closed-loop liquid cooler, which seems to be the way most custom builders are going these days. That’s likely due to not only the headroom they give overclockers,... Read more...
iBuypower is offering an AMD-based system in its Chimera 4SE line, which is designed to give users serious gaming performance without a wallet-busting price tag. The Chimera is part of iBuypower’s Signature Series, which includes iBuypower’s highest-priced and most powerful gaming systems, like the Revolt and Valkyrie. So, what makes a desktop PC a Chimera 4SE? The chassis, for one thing. The Chimera has a custom chassis with unique artwork that makes the Chimera easily identifiable. (We talk more about the chassis on the next page.) Overclocking is another Chimera feature. The system comes with a 10% factory overclock “with room for more,” according to iBuypower.... Read more...
We spent a little time checking out the Technology Showcase at IDF13 and spotted a number of cool pieces of hardware on the show floor we thought you’d like to check out. It seemed a number of popular memory manufacturers all got the same memo, as Crucial, Kingston and G.SKILL were all showing off DDR4 memory modules in their booths, among other existing memory and storage related products.          The focus in Crucial’s booth was clearly on DDR4 memory, which will eventually usher in higher clock speeds at lower voltages on the desktop. G.SKILL too was showing off some DDR4 memory modules, alongside an Ivy Bridge E based system rocking some... You know G.Skill as a maker of memory products, including system memory and solid state drives (SSDs). The company is also active in the overclocking scene where its modules have set frequency records. All of that is fine and dandy and will continue to be a focus, but moving forward, G.Skill also wants to be recognized as a maker of PC peripherals. G.Skill's enhanced persona will kick off at the Computex convention in Taipei next week. That's where G.Skill "will be making a strong entrance in the field of PC gaming peripherals" starting with newly engineered gaming headsets. Here's a teaser shot the company provided to the press: Unfortunately, that's all the details we have. G.Skill said it... Read more...
Why choose between speed or capacity when you can have both? So proposes memory maker G.Skill, which claims its new Trident X Series 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3-2800 memory kit (F3-2800C11Q-32GTXD) is the fastest clocked 32GB kit you'll find on the entire planet. "Being the first to introduce such large capacity memory kit running at an incredible speed of 2800MHz, G.Skill continues to impress power users/professional overclockers by offering the best memory solution with highest quality," G.Skill said in a statement. The kit consists of four sticks of 8GB memory modules. Alone or apart, they're rated to run at C11-13-13-35 at 1.65V. G.Skill mentions they're a perfect complement to Z77-based boards running... To coincide with the release of Intel's current flagship Sandy Bridge-E processor and companion X79 chipset, a number of Intel’s memory partners released new quad-channel memory kits optimized for the platform. Previous Intel platforms were designed to offer optimal performance with two or three-channel memory configurations; Sandy Bridge-E and the X79 Express, however, perform best with a quad-channel setup. As such, we thought it would be a good idea to round-up a varied group of quad-channel memory kit options to see how each performed with a Sandy Bridge-E CPU and the X79 Express chipset, along with learning about what kind of features they offered to end users... Around the same time, Intel had also defined a new Extreme Memory Profile (XMP 1.3) specification, for easy optimization and overclocking. As such, we thought it would be a good idea to round-up a varied group of quad-channel memory kit options to see how each... Read more...
According to HWBot, the world record for memory overclocking has fallen again. Christian Ney, a Swiss overclocker, hit DDR3-3736MHz with a 4GB G.Skill RipjawZ DIMM. He used liquid nitrogen to keep the processor and memory cool, down to -197 degree C both at idle and under load. The screenshots of CPU-Z tell the tale. The memory was set to timings of 11 (CAS), 13 (RAS to CAS delay), 13 (RAS precharge), 36 (tRAS cycle time). Ney’s rig consisted of the aforementioned G.Skill memory as well as an AMD A8-3870K processor, Voodoo3 2000 PCI (Avenger) graphics card, Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H motherboard, 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, and a 750W X-Series PSU. Another day, another solid state drive to consider for your rig. SSDs are becoming ever more tempting these days with increasing capacities, increasing speeds, more stability and lower prices. But of course, HDDs are following the same path, but at least some of the larger SSDs are now becoming viable alternatives from a value perspective. G.Skill is a name most commonly referred to when speaking about memory, but this week they're introducing a new solid state drive. It's the Phoenix EVO 115GB, which uses the new SandForce SF-1222 controller and 2xnm NAND flash chips. It's rated at 280MBps / 270MBps, and comes with a 3-year warranty on top of that. There's no listed price, but it should be on... Read more...
A high-performance gaming rig is only as strong as its memory, and G.Skill is one of the world leaders when it comes to high performance RAM. If you're in need of a memory boost, or you're building a new machine with performance in mind, the company's new Sniper series is worth a look. It's designed in ultra-low voltage, particularly 1.25V. That can save up to 10% on electricity drain, and it will also enable power-minded gamers to push the boundaries without too many overheating problems. Or, no overheating problems if you don't take things to the extreme. The kits that are shipping are rather large, in terms of capacity. There's a 4GB x 2 kit and a 4GB x 6 kit, so don't even bother looking... Read more...
SSDs account for just a fraction of the storage market in terms of units shipped, but high consumer interest and significant profit margins have brought manufacturers in droves. GSkill isn't exactly a newcomer to the field, but the sheer number of companies in the dogpile make it more difficult for any single manufacturer to win a definitive lead against the others, at least in terms of technology alone. Today we're reviewing GSkill's 60GB Phoenix Pro. This relatively diminutive drive is meant to offer enthusiasts an attractive balance between price and performance, but the Phoenix Pro is fighting to distinguish itself in a tight field...
