Starting on September 22nd and running through the 25th Blizzard will have a free weekend where you won't have to spend any money to get the game or play. Earlier this month we talked about the folks working to organize the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games wanting to add eSports games. Ratings for the Olympics have been on the decline as it appears fewer people care to watch most of the sports that the games highlight each year. This led the Paris Olympics committee to decide that adding in eSports might be a good thing to boost ratings and viewership. As you are likely aware, eSports draw huge crowds and have very avid supporters that could help turn the Olympic ratings slump around and get younger people interested in the games again. Most would assume from the willingness to consider eSports that it could mean shooters like DOTA 2, Counter-Strike,... Read more...
Gaming is meant to be fun, but it just can't be all of the time. That's because players of online games have to be constantly aware of looming threats. Yet another new case of an attack, involving a game called ROBLOX, highlights the fact that it's not just the game itself that is at risk sometimes, but the tools surrounding it. Despite the fact that ROBLOX mimics Minecraft in that its an open-world sandbox game, it actually came out years before Mojang released even an alpha. Today, the game enjoys an impressive 12 million monthly users, many of whom use the ultra-successful platform Discord to chat to friends. It's Discord in this case that's the big threat, though, again proving to us that... Read more...
One of the greatest appeals of Netflix is that for a monthly fee, you have nearly unlimited access to a wealth of movies and television shows, as well as some seriously entertaining original series. What if a service existed for gaming that was similar to Netflix in terms of its addictive content? Microsoft just launched Xbox Games Pass, a video game subscription service that has the potential to do just. Xbox One owners can pay $10 USD a month in order to access over one hundred different games currently. Gamers will then need to download the games directly to their hard drive and install them on their Xbox One or Xbox 360. They will also need to still maintain an Internet connection. This mode... The AMD Radeon RX 580 has been in the wild for over a month at this point. AMD pitched the Radeon RX 580 as an ideal choice for gamers looking to upgrade from graphics hardware acquired a couple years back. Specifically, in the lead up to the launch, AMD compared the performance of the RX 580 to cards like the Radeon R9 380. So, with that in mind, we're in the lab today to test that claim using the recently launched Prey reboot from Bethesda Softworks and developer Arkane Studios, as our primary benchmark and game engine to explore. The game also just so happens to look fabulous.  This is an AMD focused analysis; yet all frugal-minded gamers in general, should take note. If the Sub-$300... Read more...
Far Cry 5 is coming, and the hype train rolls out today with the reveal of the very first teaser trailer for the game. If the Himalayan atmosphere of Far Cry 4 was a bit too “out there” for you, maybe you will be more at home with the setting of Far Cry 5: present-day Montana. Montana might seem like a rather strange place for a modern, first-person shooter, but you can’t argue with the picturesque landscapes presented in the trailer below. We don’t have much to go on from the actual trailer other than the blood curdling scream of a man at the start, a shot of a person running through a field of high grass and the troubling sight of a man ringing a bell with the head of another (unconscious... Although a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront II leaked a few days ago, Electronic Arts is today providing us with the real deal on the sequel to the original game, which launched two years ago. While Star Wars: Battlefront was multiplayer-only (and was roundly criticized because of that oversight), Battlefront II actually has a full single-player campaign for those that want it. In fact, the debut trailer for the game focuses primarily on the single-player mode, which introduces an all-new character: Iden Versio. As the official website for the Battlefront II explains, Iden is a “commander of Inferno Squad—an Imperial special forces unit equally lethal on the ground and in space. Encounter... Read more...
The sad reality of gaming is that it is not uncommon for a title to ship with bugs. Some have a few crawling around while others are infested to the point where even the Orkin man would cringe. After plenty of hype and anticipation, Mass Effect: Andromeda fell somewhere in between, leaving many gamers feeling disgruntled with the state it shipped in. If you stopped playing because of it, you may want to give the game another shot. Bioware promised to fix a host of issues with its 1.05 patch, which is now available. More than just lip service, it seems the patch has done a lot of good for the game, in particular with the way characters' eyeballs looked. Prior to the patch, there were complaints... Read more...
It's a funny thing, I've killed more people over the years than I care to remember. Some of them I shot down in the streets because they were invading my turf, and others I ran over with a car—it's hard to avoid plowing through pedestrians when driving on the sidewalk. Of course, all of this happened in a virtual landscape, and not once did I feel compelled to repeat my heinous actions in the real world. That's weird, because study have study have shown that in-game violence leads to real-world crimes. So, what gives? As absolutely shocking as this may sound, the studies were wrong. We'll give you a moment to pick your jaw up off the floor. Now brace yourself before reading further. Ready for... Read more...
Balancing a checkbook can be a real buzz kill if you often find yourself with too much month at the end of your paycheck. Do you know what else stinks? Auditing the expense of in-game purchases, whether paid for with the time you spend grinding away to avoid doling out real dollars, or the actual hit to your wallet for various microtransactions. This is especially true in For Honor, in which casual players would have to clear their calendars for the next two and a half years in order to unlock all of the game's items. Or you can spend an exorbitant amount to unlock everything. Here's the thing—in For Honor, you can avoid microtransactions completely by earning steel in the game, which in turn... Read more...
Ghost Recon: Wildands takes gamers back to squad-based tactical shooter country, albeit this time we’re dropping in hot, to cartel-controlled Bolivia. Our mission is to gather intel to systematically take down each cartel leader until the head of the snake is dispatched. The operation is playable solo or with three others in 4-player co-op. Ubisoft has also made this one available for would-be operatives on all Platforms (PC, Xbox One and PS4). Ditching the futuristic theme of the previous Ghost Recon installment, Wildlands is firmly set in the present and brings a new, completely open-world setting to the franchise, in what Ubisoft is calling "one of the biggest games it has ever published."... Building a PC from scratch can seem intimidating to anyone who has never done it before. After all, computers are capable of complex calculations, so assembling a system from a pile of pricey parts must be difficult, right? Well, no. It's actually rather easy to piece together a PC once you know where everything goes. To help with that, a programmer from Romania is developing a simulator that has virtual builders installing everything from the motherboard standoffs to the CPU and even drive bay covers. It's called PC Building Simulator and it's available now to tinker with, albeit as an alpha build. As such, it's a bit rough around the edges. The only mode of play is the tutorial—there is a career... Read more...
Nintendo is taking a big risk with the Switch, a hybrid console that eschews a spec war with Microsoft's Xbox One S and Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro in favor of a versatile gaming experience, one that can be enjoyed in the traditional living room setting in front of the big screen TV, as well as on the go like any any other mobile handheld. Such a gamble needs a blockbuster hit, and it appears Nintendo has one in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Zelda is one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time. Link, the iconic main character, was introduced over three decades ago with the original Zelda title on the Famicom Disk System in Japan, and then the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)...
