Doom Eternal is here, and the early consensus around the HotHardware email thread is that the game is absolutely stunning. The 2016 Doom reboot ran great on relatively pedestrian hardware thanks to obsessive fine tuning by id Software and its id Tech 6 engine. The new Doom is harder, faster, and louder, but still unmistakably Doom, and it's a graphical tour de force. Since folks are diving into the game this weekend (no small part in thanks to multiple state orders to "shelter in place" because of COVID-19), we're here to share the quickest way to optimize performance. Tune-Up Those Drivers For Doom Eternal, Especially Graphics To start with, if you have a Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER... Read more...

Look, anyone who plays Fortnite who says they don't want a Polar Renegade Spray is lying. I mean, just look at it (show above)! Okay, maybe not everyone cares about earning the uncommon spray, which is from the Bear Brigade set. But for those who do, completing a Winterfest challenge is the key (which starts with your stocking). More on that in a moment. First, let's start with Day 12 challenge, which involves destroying Snowflake Decorations around the map. There are several that are scattered across the map, and it can take a bit of time hunting them down. However, you only need to destroy three of them, so that makes things a little easier. These can be found at POIs on the map, though the... Read more...

When it comes to today's PC games, most new titles will cost you upwards of $60 if you want to purchase it the day of release. As the months (and years) pile on, that price often falls down to $20 or even lower if you're lucky. Such is the came with a racing simulator that hails from 2015: DiRT Rally. If you visit the Steam store today through tomorrow morning at 10:00am EST, you can grab that game for the low, low price of free. It might not be packing all of the latest graphics wonders like real-time ray tracing made possible by NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards, but it still looks good on modern PCs despite its age. While DiRT Rally isn't a balls to the wall, hyper-realistic simulator,... Read more...
It seems that even Blizzard's World of Warcraft can be a cruel, cruel mistress. Unfortunate fans of the classic WoW experience had their days ruined today by a sustained DDOS attack on Blizzard's servers, according to multiple sources. It isn't just WoW Classic, either. Several independent sources are reporting that servers for the latest expansion, Battle of Azeroth, are also under attack. WoW Classic only launched on August 26th, 2019, which is just a couple of weeks ago at the time of writing. What kind of heartless monster would attack classic MMO fans at a time like this? Could it be a nefarious attack by North Korea, like the Sony breach of 2014? Could it be the work of jilted lovers,... Read more...
We all float down here. Rumor has it that Fortnite will celebrate Halloween with an It: Chapter Two crossover. Several leaks were posted on Twitter that hint that the crossover is coming soon. Data miners discovered sound bites labeled “Illinois Laugh” and they sound eerily like laugh of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The data miners also found a file for a “CreepyBalloon”. The floating balloon resembles the balloon that Pennywise uses to lure his victims. Image from FortTory via Twitter Epic Games appears to have tried to misdirect data miners. The “CreepyBalloon” is light pink instead of the iconic red. The sound bite has been labelled as the “Illinois... Read more...

Finnish game studio Remedy Entertainment makes some of the finest-looking, quirkiest games around. Perhaps best known for the Max Payne series (but not Max Payne 3, which was developed solely by Rockstar), Remedy has been publishing its games exclusively on Xbox and PC for the last several years. The studio has delivered interesting, story-driven games more recently in the form of cult survival classic Alan Wake and the more recent sci-fi thriller Quantum Break. Both games featured cutting-edge graphics for their respective times. For that reason, maybe it's no surprise that the studio's latest creation, Control, uses the most cutting-edge graphics technology available today, including... Read more...

It's hard to tell from the video if the cookies are to replenish energy lost in battle or if they grant special abilities. Snapfire... Read more...

Following the disappointing launch of Fallout 76, a team of modders and fans of other games in the Fallout franchise have set out to recreate what could be the next best game in the Fallout series. The team aims to take the well-developed, story-driven world of Fallout 2 and essentially port it to the Fallout 4 game engine as a mod called "Fallout 4: Project Arroyo." Following the acquisition of the Fallout franchise by Bethesda, Fallout has become one of those widely recognized games with millions of followers worldwide. To be fair, Fallout didn't get there overnight or by the actions of Bethesda alone. The first Fallout game as well as its sequel Fallout 2 were both created by Interplay in... Read more...
If the thought of playing a small and very short new game each day piques your interest, Mediations my be a platform that will interest you. The person behind the idea is Rami Ismail, and the whole concept behind Meditations came to him in late 2017 when he found a small game called TEMPRES, something he calls a minimalist puzzle game. That small game took no longer than five minutes to figure out says Ismail. That experience kicked off a quest to sign up developers to create small games that are easy to pick up, figure out, and play with the Meditations launcher offering up a new title every day. Ismail signed up 350 developers with each developer asked to pick a day of the year that meant something... Read more...

If you are a fan of the original 1993 game Doom, you are in for a treat with Romero Games offering up a new expansion for the original game to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The game is called SIGIL, and John Romero says that the game is a free megawad that contains nine single-player levels and nine deathmatch levels with music by metal guitarist Buckethead. The megawad will launch in mid-February and requires that you have the original 1993 registered version of Doom to play, not the newer 2016 version of Doom for Switch and other platforms. Before you panic -- if you lost your original Doom floppies from way back in 1994 -- the original DOOM is available on Steam. Romero calls SIGIL... Read more...
EA announced that it will partner with Petroglyph Games to remaster Command And Conquer, which is one of the oldest games in the RTS genre. The original Command And Conquer first launched in 1995 and quickly became a success, spawning a whole series of games. It also lead to the creation of the Red Alert series, which has a similar gameplay experience, but it is set in an alternate universe. Due to Command And Conquer's success, EA purchased the game's developer, Westwood Studios, in 1998. Westwood Studios continued to produce new entries in the Command And Conquer series until 2003, when EA closed it down and moved development of future Command And Conquer to a number of other developers. Bethesda officially launched Fallout 76 today, and already it has received hundreds of negative reviews on Metacritic. The majority of these reviews are for the PS4 version of the game, but the game as whole has a current total of 421 negative reviews. Far fewer positive reviews have been posted to metacritic, adding up to just 123. A common complaint among the reviews is that the game looks and feels too much like Fallout 4, and that's something I agree with. I had a chance to try out the BETA version of Fallout 76 for PC, and gaming with max settings on a 4K screen I couldn't see any visual difference between Fallout 76 and Fallout 4. There were a number of graphical glitches that stood out... Read more...
