There are some things that you can take for granted from BMW. One of them is that its cars are luxurious; even the less expensive 2- and 3-Series cars are posh compared to the standard fare from most automakers. BMW also makes some very fast cars like the 2020 M340i that it rolled out last November. One of the most luxurious of the vehicles in the BMW stable is the 7-Series, and Alpina has taken that luxurious car and turned it into the world's fastest sedan. The car is the 2020 Alpina B7, and its biggest claim to fame is the over 200 mph top speed the vehicle is capable of. Only five other sedans in the world boast a top speed of at least 200 mph; the Alpina B7 is the sixth and fastest of them... Read more...
After the years of teasing, spy shots, and camouflaged prototypes blasting through Europe, did Toyota actually slip up just weeks ahead of the 2020 Supra's official debut? That appears to be the case, thanks to a goof on Toyota Germany's website. The website allows you to get on the waitlist for the 2020 Supra, and states the following (translated from German): We are sorry, all Supra have already been reserved.  Thank you for your interest in reserving a Supra. Due to the high demand unfortunately all vehicles are already reserved at the moment.  Register now on the waiting list so that we can let you know when there are some vehicles available again. We only need your name and... Read more...
At this point, we just wish that Toyota would go ahead and reveal the new Supra (MKV) instead of waiting for the official Detroit Auto Show announcement. The nameplate has been on hiatus in the United States since the late 1990s and Toyota has been teasing its return (and dragging us along for the ride) for the past five years. Most recently, we've seen the vehicle strutting around in plain sight covered in digital camouflage meant to mask its true shape. However, we're getting a nice good look at the car's butt courtesy of a photo leak. In the picture above, you can see a rather large integrated spoiler (first seen on the Toyota FT-1 concept car), a massive rear diffuser and dual exhausts. Also... Read more...
The move to electric vehicles seems inevitable, but we are slowly getting there as early adopters purchase vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt. However, there are three primary negatives that make the buying public skeptical of EVs at the moment: cost, range anxiety, and the widespread availability of quick-charging stations. With respect to charging infrastructure, the German National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW), whose members include BMW and Porsche, have developed a prototype 450 kW charging station that uses a Type 2 Combined Charging System (CCS). In early testing, the consortium supplied a test vehicle with a 90-kWh lithium-ion battery... Read more...
BMW has announced details on its new for 2020 M340i and M340i xDrive sedans. These cars are identical save for the xDrive being an all-wheel-drive, and the standard M340i being rear-wheel drive only. BMW says that the M340i xDrive will make its official world debut at the LA International Auto Show on November 30. Both M340i versions share the same updated 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine that uses a single, twin-scroll turbocharger with an integral, compact, steel exhaust manifold. The new turbocharger features impellers that are 25% lighter than the same parts in the preceding models; lighter internals means that the turbocharger can build boost pressure more rapidly for less turbo lag and improved... BMW seems acutely aware of the criticism some have had for the more recent 3 Series iterations, so it's gone and retooled the sedan, giving it a bigger design, making it more tech savvy, and a punchier look. Or as BMW puts it, the 2019 model 3 Series "takes the signature characteristics of a BMW and turns the volume up several notches." The dial has quite been turned up to 11, though certainly the latest 3 Series is a bolder, more aggressive representation of the sporty sedan. It has T-shaped air intakes in front of both wheel wells, sleeker looking twin LED headlights, a "kidney grille" with a single surround for the two elements, slim L-shaped 3D rear lights, and a twin-pipe exhaust system.... When you think about autonomous vehicles, your mind might immediately drift to cars and vans from companies like Waymo, which have racked up eight million cumulative miles. What your mind doesn’t go to is an autonomous motorcycle, yet that is exactly what BMW Motorrad engineers have whipped up. This autonomous motorcycle is a BMW Motorrad GS R1200 adventure bike, and its panniers aren't filled with riding gear and clothing; rather they are filled with all sorts of tech allowing this bike to start from a stop, ride around corners and curves, and stop again without a human sitting atop the bike. This BMW project is meant to help the company invent safety technology that will make... Read more...
BMW has announced that it is putting a new proprietary AI assistant into its cars that it calls the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This AI is proprietary and aims to enhance the BMW driving experience. The AI is always on and will respond to the voice prompt "Hey BMW" and can perform a range of functions for the driver. Drivers can harness the AI to control vehicle settings, navigation, entertainment systems, explain vehicle functions, and conduct conversations. BMW plans to debut the AI in 2019 and promises that this will usher in a new era for drivers to operate their cars and functions via voice control. In the future, BMW claims that the AI will be ready to help drivers when they are... Read more...
Last week, we gave you a first look at the 2019 BMW Z4 M40i Roadster courtesy of renders that leaked early to the internet. The images gave us good looks as the vehicle from nearly every angle (save for the front) and even a glimpse inside the cabin. Today, however, we're getting The Full Monte, as the car was officially unveiled today at Pebble Beach. Taken as a whole, we're not quite certain what to make of the styling direction of the car. It seems to have lost some of the ultra-long nose, short rear deck proportions of its predecessor and has adopted a lot more swooshes and air vents this time around. Stylistically, it looks sort of like a mashup between a current-generation Mercedes-Benz... Read more...
Around this time last year, BMW outed its Concept Z4 Roadster, which as it turns out was a thinly-veiled look at the all-new 2019 Z4. Images of the non-camouflaged 2019 Z4 leaked over the weekend, and now we're getting a glimpse at the first official renders that have made their way to the internet ahead of the vehicle's debut at Pebble Beach. Needless to say, the changes from concept to production are minimal, so if you liked the looks of the Concept Z4, there's a pretty good chance that you'll like what you see here in Z4 M40i trim. Some of the prominent features include a large air vent behind the front wheels, dual roll bars behind the seats, and a soft top mechanism to replace the previous... Read more...
BMW's 8-Series coupe died nearly two decades ago and in the interim was replaced -- in spirit -- by the 6-Series. The 6-Series never had quite the appeal of the 90's wunderkind, but it is now back in full force in the BMW lineup. BMW first teased the design direction of the new luxury coupe back in mid-2017 with the Concept 8 Series, and the production models doesn't stray too far from that precedent. There's a wide twin-kidney grille up front (which is flanked by full LED headlights) with a rather large air intake just below. Another set of inlets flank the lower grille. The sides of the vehicle are rather unadorned save for a pair of vents aft of either front wheel. Out back, you'll find... Read more...
Believe it or not, but the BMW X5 is approaching its 20th birthday. The first-generation model went into production in 1999 as a 2000 model year vehicle. Today, BMW has taken the wraps off the fourth-generation X5, and it's appealing as ever for those looking for a premium, mid-size crossover vehicle. As seems to be the case with every new generation of vehicle launched these days, the 2019 X5 is larger than before, and comes packing in even more technology and luxury features that you would expect (from a BMW). The vehicle is 1.1 inches longer than the outgoing model, and rides on a wheelbase that is just fractionally longer than before. It's built using BMW's Cluster Architecture, which... Read more...
BMW has been experimenting with alternative powertrains for quite some time, and has offered vehicle like i8 sports carand the funky i3 whatchamacallit(which is available in fully-electric and range-extending variants). Now, the company is looking to bring an electrified version of its hot-selling X3 crossover to market, and it will be called the iX3. The vehicle debuted in concept for today, and it retains the same basic shape as its gasoline-engined sibling. Most of the changes occur upfront where the twin kidney grille gives way to a version that sort of merges the two together. To our eyes, it reminds us a bit of a KIA grille, but we digress -- it's a false grille anyway given... Read more...
BMW has gone official with the all-new 2019 M2 Competition sports car. The first notable thing about the new car is that it has a detuned version of the engine from the M3 and M4 under its hood. In M2 Competition guise, that M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine makes 405hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That heart is an M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder unit that pushes power to the rear wheels. Driving purists will be thrilled to hear that the standard transmission is a 6-speed manual unit, while the M DCT is optional for those preferring flappy paddles for shifting. BMW says that the car is good for a 0-60 mph sprint of 4.0 seconds with the DCT transmission and 4.2 seconds with a manual.... Read more...
