In the coming weeks, Amazon might introduce its own line of big screen televisions in the United States, perhaps under its Amazon Basics branding. This would be a significant move, and one that could potentially benefit consumers with aggressively priced alternatives to TVs offered by the usual suspects, including LG, Samsung, and Sony. While nothing has been announced, it wouldn't be surprising if this comes to fruition. The retailer already launched a line of Amazon Basics TVs in India last year, including 55-inch, 50-inch, and 43-inch models, all three of which boast a 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, speakers with Dolby Atmos, and smart functionality provided by Amazon's Fire TV operating... Following call center company Teleperformance allegedly forcing employees to undergo AI camera surveillance, Amazon wants to monitor its own customer service employees. Soon, Amazon could use a system that captures all workers' keystrokes to run behavioral analysis and prevent malicious hackers or imposters from stealing data. In a confidential document acquired by Motherboard, Amazon reports that there have been several cases of customer data being accessed around the world. India ranks at the top of the list, with 120 security incidents, followed by the Philippines with just under 70, and the U.S. with approximately 40 security incidents. While each of these incidents are not explained,... Read more...
We’ve got another round of hot deals for you today, and they cover a rather eclectic range of tech products. You can find discounts on the latest M1 Mac Mini, Google’s venerable Pixel 3 XL, and Western Digital/SanDisk storage products. Apple M1 Mac Mini Up To $150 Off At Amazon The Mac mini was last refreshed in late October, and it received the highly acclaimed M1 (Apple Silicon) SoC at that time. This brain transplant gave the entry-level Mac a significant boost in performance over its Intel-based predecessor. Today, Amazon is discounting the base Mac mini (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) to $649 instead of the $699 MSRP. However, an additional $49.01 discount at checkout takes it down to just... Read more...
Amazon has secured a lucrative contract dubbed 'WildandStormy' to supply its Amazon Web Services (AWS) to the United States National Security Agency (NSA), in a deal that could be worth as much as $10 billion when all is said and done. However, it might be premature for Amazon to celebrate the contract win—it's under legal dispute by Microsoft. If this situation sounds familiar, it's because Amazon and Microsoft already fought over a similarly massive contract to supply their respective cloud services to the government. Back in 2019, the US Department of Justice awarded Microsoft Azure for its Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, with the JEDI contract having a ceiling of $10 billion... Read more...

If you thought Amazon wanting drivers to submit to biometric surveillance was bad, these recent revelations take the cake. Colombia-based call center workers, who perform outsourced customer services for some of the largest companies in the US, are now reportedly being pressured into signing a contract allowing their employer to install cameras in their homes to monitor work performance. Teleperformance is one of the world’s largest call center companies with nearly 400,000 employees and clientele, including Apple, Amazon, and Uber, among others. Now, in a new ground-breaking report from NBC, six workers for the Colombian company, even working on contracts for these companies, have come... Read more...
Late last week, we received the latest market share numbers from Mercury Research regarding AMD's processor market share. Needless to say, the company is performing exceptionally well in both the client and server markets. According to Mercury Research, AMD's share of the overall x86 processor revenue market stood at 16.9 percent for Q2 2021, which was a +0.8 point change compared to the prior quarter and a +7.3 point change year-over-year. In addition, client and server revenue share stood at 15.8 percent and 11.6 percent, up 4.1 and 4.7 percentage points, respectively, compared to the same period last year. With this in mind, we decided to venture over to two of the most popular retail websites... Read more...
We have a gaggle of hot deals for this Sunday on Apple products and a couple of mesh routers that might be right up your alley. Starting things off with the Apple camp, the AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, 4th generation iPad Air, and 2nd generation Apple Pencil are all deeply discounted. Starting with the AirPods Pro, these wireless noise-canceling earbuds are frequently on sale and today are available for $185 at Woot.com. Admittedly, that's not as low as the recent $179 pricing that we saw late last month, but it's still a screaming bargain versus its retail price of $249. In addition, the AirPods Pro come with a wireless charging case, support 3D spatial audio, and last up to 5 hours per charge... Read more...
If you're in the market for a fast gaming monitor to connect to your swanky GeForce RTX 3000 or Radeon RX 6000 graphics card, we have some excellent news for you this afternoon from the LG camp. Two of the company's 27-inch gaming monitors are available with rather steep discounts for a limited time. Kicking things off is the UltraGear 27GN750-B, a 27-inch gaming display with a Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. LG claims a 1ms response time (GTG) for this IPS monitor, and it comes with a 240Hz refresh rate. In addition to supporting HDR10, the UltraGear 27GN750-B also is compatible with NVIDIA's G-SYNC adaptive sync technology to eliminate screen tearing. The specs also claim that the display covered... What is the lowest amount you would sell your personal palm print for to a third-party? Amazon is offering $10 in promotional credit to anyone who scans their palm at a checkout-free store and links it to their Amazon account. In late 2020, the company introduced “Amazon One” as a “free, contactless service that lets you use your palm to pay, enter, or identify yourself.” This works because palm prints are like fingerprints in that everyone’s print is unique. As such, the palm prints can be scanned using Amazon’s “proprietary imaging and computer vision algorithms” to capture an image that is then tied to a user’s Amazon account. While... Read more...
Legislators worldwide have had a microscope on Amazon for some time now, and it seems a weakness has been found. The European Union recently slapped the world’s largest e-tailer with the biggest-ever privacy violation fine of a whopping 746-million euro ($888 million). On July 16th, CNPD, or the Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection, handed down the fine after a decision that blamed Amazon for processing personal data in a way that did not comply with EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The imposed fine of “€746 million and corresponding practice revision” was subsequently reported in a recent SEC filing from Amazon, where it was also noted that the... Read more...
Do you own an older Amazon Kindle device? Depending on the model, and whether or not you still use it (or plan to again), you may want to make a list of e-books you want to download and hop to it while you still can. Starting in a few months, the ability to download e-books using the cellular functionality in certain models will disappear for good (owners of newer Kindles need not worry). This is not Amazon playing a cruel trick on digital bookworms. Instead, it is a result of mobile network operators (MNOs) in the United States getting ready to switch off older 3G and 2G cellular signals, as they move to make further inroads in 4G and 5G connectivity. Due to this, Amazon has been sending out... Read more...
Amazon’s New World beta has been open now for over a week. Many players have overall enjoyed fighting monsters, utilizing resources, and joining factions in the MMO, but some have found other ways to enjoy their time. One player adopted the online ID “AmazonOfficial” in New World and has spent their time telling others in the game about many of Amazon’s alleged offenses. The online ID was adopted by Lulu Chiba, a community director at video game developers Aggro Crab Games and Eggnut Games. She quickly discovered that “AmazonOfficial,” “AmazonSupport,” and other desirable names were available and nabbed “AmazonOfficial.” She then decided... Read more...
Just last week, Bitcoin crashed below $30,000, descending to its lowest point in a month, and dropping to less than half of its peak value from April of this year. And today? It is not only back above $30,000, it is fast approaching $40,000 on speculation that Amazon will soon begin accepting the volatile cryptocurrency for online purchases. At the time of this writing, Bitcoin is up nearly 13 percent in the past 24 hours, to $38,449. That's still well below its all-time high of $64,829, but for proponents of Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency in general), it is again trending in the right direction. It also highlights the wild swings that the world's most popular digital currency is prone to. It seems... Read more...
If you've been following New World, the first title out of Amazon's PC game development, you'll know it's been a bit of a bumpy ride. Something about the game was reportedly causing certain GeForce RTX 3090 cards to keel over and die. Reports were pouring in all over Reddit of graphics cards from a variety of manufacturers that seized or went black while displaying the in-game menu of New World's closed beta. After that, the party was over and the graphics card was dead.  Fortunately, all hope is not lost for gamers whose cards fell victim to whatever caused this issue. YouTuber JayzTwoCents did his own investigations into the trouble, and says he's measuring GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards... Read more...
Amazon's game development team is now planning to issue a patch for the New World MMORPG that has made headlines this week for all the wrong reasons. Well, one wrong reason specifically—reports that it is somehow killing expensive GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards, possibly by cooking the memory chips (as one of the theories goes). Reports of issues with NVIDIA's top-tier graphics card surfaced after New World's closed beta went live on Tuesday morning. In multiple threads (on Reddit and New World's forums), users claimed the game was frying their GeForce RTX 3090 hardware, to the point where the cards were no longer functioning, necessitating a warranty replacement. That is never a pleasant... Read more...

Well, this is not good. There are multiple complaints from GeForce RTX 3090 owners who say their GPUs have gone belly-up after spending some time playing the closed beta for Amazon's New World MMORPG. Most of the reports are coming from people who say they own EVGA's GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra card, though not exclusively. The closed beta went live yesterday morning (or afternoon, depending on your time zone), with servers available in North America, Europe, Australia, and Brazil. It is set to launch to the public at large next month on August 31, after being delayed from its original May 2020 launch time frame. New World is one of three games Amazon Game Studios announced in 2016, the only... Read more...
Although we're now in the year 2021, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will soon kick off. The COVID-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc across the world during 2020 was the reason for the delay, but things will officially get underway on July 23rd and run through August 8th. Many of us will be glued to our TV sets to watch the games on our big screen Smart TVs, complete with surround sound speaker systems. However, the games are being held in Japan, and there is a considerable time zone difference here in the United States. That means that we'll likely miss many critical events as they occur live, and even if we can catch live events (or have time to watch them on replay), we might not be sitting in front...
