NVIDIA's GeForce 7 Update: Introducing the 7900 GTX, 7900 GT & 7600 GT

7900 vs. 7800 with Similar Clocks

Next we did a quick study on how the new GeForce 7900 would perform if we clocked them down to GeForce 7800 series levels.  Have there been changes made in hardware such that there is any appreciable performance increase clock-for-clock in the new GeForce 7900 series architecture?  We'll see if we can answer this next.

Underclocking the New GeForce 7900s
Faster than 7800s clock-for-clock?

In short, the answer is no. Downclock a GeForce 7900GTX to GeForce 7800 GTX 512 speeds and you get roughly the same performance.  The same holds true for downclocking a GeForce 7900GT to 256MB GeForce 7800 GTX levels.  The GeForce 7900 series is obviously all about the die shrink, higher core clock speeds and faster memory.   That's no surprise really.  Where NVIDIA was able to trim transistors in silicon, they didn't gain or lose performance, looking at it from a clock-for-clock tick perspective.
