There are multiple ways to sneakily extract data from a PC, and not all of them involve directly tapping into the storage device. Even a PC that is not connected to a network is vulnerable. These are referred to as air gapped systems, and security researcher Mordechai Guri from Israel's Ben Gurion University of the Negev found yet another way to siphon data from them, this time by interpreting sounds from the power supply. Guri is a bit of a specialist in this area. Last month, he outlined a clever method of extracting data from an air gapped PC by manipulating and interpreting case fan vibrations. He referred to this method as 'AiR-ViBeR' in a whitepaper. While limited in scope, if a person... Read more...
Gigabyte is pulling the covers off some new gaming peripherals and other PC component hardware at Computex 2018. One of the products is the company's new AORUS RGB gaming RAM. The memory is a 16GB kit using a pair of DDR4 8GB DIMMs. It operates up to clock speeds of 3200 MHz with has timings of 16-18-18-38. Voltage is 1.2V standard and when XMP is enabled 1.35V is consumed. The DDR4 DRAM chips employed are Samsung B die parts and the sticks are fitted with a fancy looking symmetric high-efficiency heat spreader. The RGB LED lights on the RAM supports 5 DDR light effects. Gigabyte says that the RAM is 100% binned and tested with a limited lifetime warranty. For gamers and enthusiasts who... Read more...
EVGA set up shop in a swank suite at the Bellagio Hotel a short distance away from the craziness of the Las Vegas Convention Center, to display its latest products to CES attendees. As you’d expect, EVGA had a wide array of motherboards and NVIDIA GPU-based graphics cards on hand, including a custom GeForce GTX 980 Ti geared for the upcoming wave of VR gear, but the company also revealed some upcoming products that have nothing to do with graphics.     Some of EVGA’s high-end, custom GeForce GTX cards were displayed in a glass case, with a trio of EVGA’s custom SLI bridges situated just in front. The company’s TORQ gaming mice were on display as well, along with... Read more...
Whenever a company uses the word "value" to describe a product, our skepticism meter starts buzzing. In many cases, their definition of value either differs from ours, or the low price comes at the expense of quality. EVGA contends that neither is the case with its new line of GQ power supplies for budget conscious buyers. The tagline for these new models is "great quality, great value," and indeed the GQ line delivers the goods with things like 80 Plus Gold certification, an ECO fan mode for near silent operation, high-quality Japanese capacitors that aren't likely to bulge or leak, and a semi-modular design to help with cable management. There are four models/wattage configurations to choose... Read more...
It's one thing for a company to say they believe in their product, but it's quite another to prove it. That said, it's obvious EVGA truly believes in its new SuperNOVA G2 power supply line, as evidenced by the generous10-year warranty. In addition to a elongated warranty period, EVGA's newest PSUs also boast 80 Plus Gold certification and high quality construction throughout. The SuperNOVA G2 is available in 750W and 850W models, both of which use Japanese Nippon Chemi-Con solid state capacitors. Should you tear either PSU open -- and we don't recommend you do that, for fear of electrocution and all -- you'll also find a full DC to DC, LLC resonant circuit design to improve efficiency. A dual... Read more...

Corsair is one of the few companies in the PC enthusiast space that has been able to expand their product offerings, while also maintaining or even bolstering their solid reputation in the community. All too often, a company will attempt to build upon some initial success by entering a new market with a “me too” or re-badged product and end up losing credibility with enthusiasts along the way. Corsair seems to take a different approach, however. Instead of simply re-branding a product just to quickly gain a presence in a new or fledgling market, Corsair, more often than not, seems to bide their time to customize or design a product (or product family) to specifically cater to... Corsair’s attention to detail and understanding of the enthusiast community has allowed the company to evolve from a memory manufacturer into a well-regarded supplier of cases, cooling hardware, input devices, PC audio, power supplies, gaming accessories and storage devices. Their latest product, the Corsair AX1200i Digital ATX Power Supply, takes things a step further and blazes a trail by adding some innovative and useful features not found in any competing products. The Corsair AX1200i Digital ATX Power Supply’s name hints at this PSU’s 1200 watt rating, but beyond its monstrous power output, the AX1200i is also highly efficient and sports a Digital Signal Processor (DSP)... Power supplies might be the least glamorous part of a PC build, yet ironically enough, some would argue they're the single most important component you can pick out, especially if you intend to overclock and/or are rocking high-end hardware. Unlike cases and peripherals, most PSUs aren't all that flashy, but Thermaltake's new Toughpower XT 1275W Platinum Snow Edition bucks that trend by adding a bit of "white ecstasy on PC performance," the company says. The Snow Edition unit is a nearly all-white PSU, including the fan blades, which comprise the 14cm dual-ball bearing fan with three fan modes (Fanless; Silent; and Cooling). You don't have worry yourself over which mode is appropriate, Thermaltake... Read more...

Remember when a 350W power supply would get the job done? In some builds, a modest amount of wattage is all you need, but today's high-end systems demand much, much more. Hence why there are so many beefy power supplies on the market, like Antec's newly minted High Current Pro 1000 Platinum PSU with 80 Plus Platinum certification. It's actually Antec's first kilowatt-class PSU to be 80 Plus Platinum certified, which means you can count on a minimum 89 percent efficiency at 20-100 percent load levels. Antec says it runs as efficiently as 94 percent. "We wanted to give users the best possible feature set for their investment in a 1000 watt power supply," said Mafalda Cogliani, Global Marketing... You often hear computers being compared to cars, especially when it comes to tinkering and overclocking, but whereas there's nothing sweeter sounding than the loud roar of a big block engine, PCs are most admired when they run silently. That's not always easy to accomplish, and to help you towards that goal, Cooler Master just launched its Silent Pro M2 line of modular power supplies. Cooler Master claims it improved the 135mm fan in the Silent Pro M2 series to run longer and quieter than before, though the company stopped short of offering up any particulars, such as the exact noise level and whether it still runs quiet during heavy loads. In terms of power, the Silent Pro M2 series comes in... Read more...
