One of the interesting features of the camera for the OnePlus 8 Pro is the Photocrom color mode. The mode allows the smartphone's infrared camera to see through certain materials, such as black plastic, to give a glimpse at what electronics and other devices look like inside. As cool as that function was for peering inside of electronic devices, details soon surfaced that the mode could also allow people to look through some thin black clothing. The ability to see through clothing led OnePlus to issue a software update intended to eliminate the filter in the Chinese market Hydrogen OS. However, when the software update rolled out, it removed the feature for users in other countries, which OnePlus... Read more...
For the time being, OnePlus is disabling the "Color Filter" on its OnePlus 8 Pro handset through an over-the-air software update. The decision to turn the feature off came after the phone's ability to see through certain objects came to light, giving it a sort of x-ray vision effect. While certainly neat, there are some privacy implications that come with that ability. In case you missed our previous coverage, the OnePlus 8 Pro's Color Filter uses a Photochrome mode on the handset to take infrared photography. This is what allowed it to penetrate certain objects—in the photo above, for example, we took a picture of an LG remote control using the Color Filter. As you can see, it was able... Read more...
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a fantastic smartphone from top to bottom, with its 120Hz OLED display, fast Snapdragon 865 processor paired with 12GB of RAM, great build quality and ergonomics, and exceptional camera performance. Oh, and it can see through plastic objects as well. That's right, the OnePlus 8 Pro boasts a bit of x-ray vision. We were not aware of this initially, until a user on Reddit posed the question about the potential capability, based on what they were told by a friend. "One of my friends claimed that the [OnePlus 8 Pro's] color filter sensor is able to see through a thin layer of plastic to see the electronic components behind it? Can anyone with the phone validate this claim for... Read more...
The highly anticipated OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are on sale starting today, and lucky for prospective Android flagship shoppers, we have our full deep dive review on the pages ahead. OnePlus has made a name for itself over the years, especially with Android enthusiasts, for building high quality devices with thoughtful feature inclusions, while limiting costly unnecessary features and delivering exceptional value at almost unheard-of price points. Top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered devices with more RAM, more storage, and OnePlus' lean, mean Android-based Oxygen OS -- at price points hundreds less than competitive devices -- has been the hallmark of the brand. However, this new OnePlus 8... Read more...
The launch of the OnePlus 8 Pro is getting off to a bit of a rocky start. On paper, it's certainly a worthy successor to previous OnePlus handsets, and is priced competitively for a premium phone. However, display and compatibility woes have marred the release. As it pertains to the latter, apparently the OnePlus 8 Pro has not yet been fully validated for Verizon's wireless network. OnePlus 8 Pro owners have posted various complaints on the OnePlus forums, in regards to getting their handsets working correctly on Verizon's network. Some claim they are having trouble sending and receiving SMS text messages, while others say they are unable to make or receive phone calls. So, what's going on? The... Read more...
OnePlus 8 Pro preorders are starting to arrive ahead of the official launch at retail stores on April 29th. Some who received the device early are already complaining that there are screen issues with the high-end smartphone. Among the screen issues that have been plaguing owners are crushed/clipped blacks, low brightness irregularities, "green-tint" issues, image retention, and lines appearing around the punch-hole camera cutout. OnePlus is already promising that a fix is coming, as it is aware of the issues. Some of the problems, like brightness uniformity, are typical for all OLED smartphones. Problems with crushed/clipped black colors are expected be fixable with software. Some owners are... Read more...
The OnePlus Pro 8 has leaked numerous times over the past few months, and the company's CEO has even "teased" certain aspects of the device including first-ever (for the company) wireless charging support. Today, however, the OnePlus 8 Pro is finally official, and it offers quite a lot of bang for the buck. As you might expect for a 2020 flagship, the OnePlus 8 Pro is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865 SoC, which is paired with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. 5G availability in the United States is pretty spotty right now, but it is expected to quickly expand in 2020 with wide penetration in 2021. Of course, OnePlus isn't new to 5G, as the company offered the next-generation wireless... Read more...
For the first time ever, OnePlus is getting ready to launch a smartphone with built-in wireless charging support. While now a fairly standard feature on many smartphones, the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro will be the first to feature wireless charging, with OnePlus putting its stamp on the technology with a 30W charging stand. Yes, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also work with Qi wireless chargers, but the 30W stand OnePlus is readying will make quicker work of reviving an exhausted battery. How so? It will be capable of taking the capacious 4,500 mAh battery from 1 to 50 percent in only 30 minutes. That's much faster than the typical wireless chargers that are available for Apple's iPhone devices and Samsung's... Read more...
Iron Man has some free time on his hands these days, so what he is up to? Advertising, of course! Robert Downey Jr., the actor who put Iron Man  (and the Marvel universe) on the big screen map, is apparently once again part of a marketing campaign with OnePlus. While nothing has been confirmed, it appears he is working with OnePlus to promote its upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro. The image you see above is from a similar 2019 campaign, with Robert Downey Jr. standing in front a blue McLaren in a suit and sneakers, with a OnePlus 7 Pro in hand. OnePlus told The Verge last May that it it intended to use the actor's celebrity image across Asia, with its home country and India being points of focus. What... Read more...
We pretty much assumed this would be the case, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed this morning that its 8 Series smartphones will be going "all in" with 5G connectivity when they are released later this year. Lau confirmed this bit of information first in a Twitter post, and then in an interview with CNET. But the inclusion of 5G connectivity means that pricing will also have to increase to compensate. OnePlus has always valued itself as providing a lot of bang for the buck with its smartphones, but the 5G revolution will put pressure on that position. The delicate issue of pricing was touched on by Lau in the interview, with him stating, "We've always had a position in creating... Read more...
Although the Samsung Galaxy S20 family might have kicked off the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 festivities for 2020 flagship Android smartphones, it certainly won't be the last new device announced. One of the next smartphones to come down the pipeline will be the OnePlus 8 Pro. In addition to the aforementioned Snapdragon 865 SoC, the OnePlus 8 Pro will also come with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. It's said the SoC will be paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM depending on whether you opt for 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. On the display front, it's expected that the smartphone's OLED will measure 6.5 inches with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. pic.twitter.com/laO3szAcsM... Read more...
OnePlus has been able to build a reputation and a following by offering high-end features in Android handsets that undercut the competition on price. The OnePlus 7T, for example, is every bit a premium Android phone, but is significantly cheaper than some of the $1,000 top-shelf handsets on the market. That said, where is the wireless charging feature? Well, it might be coming to the OnePlus 8 Pro. For whatever reason, wireless charging is an increasingly popular feature that has, up to this point, eluded OnePlus owners. Instead, OnePlus has been hanging its hat on Warp Charge technology. Users who shell out for the $30 Warp Charge adapter can take their OnePlus 7T from a comatose state to a... Read more...
It's only been a couple of months since we posted a review of the OnePlus 7T, but in the time that has elapsed, there have been numerous leaks and rumors centered on the unannounced OnePlus 8 Pro. If you were hoping for a reprieve from another leak today, well, our apologies. Instead of a reprieve, you get some diagrams to look at. The diagrams are mostly in line with previously leaked renders, so there's not a lot that is new. However, they do outline (quite literally) some changes OnePlus is making to its next flagship phone, assuming these are legit. Perhaps the most interesting (to some people) is the pill-shaped cutout in the front of the handset. The OnePlus 7T debuted with a teardrop notch... Read more...
Leaks, rumors, and renders pertaining to the OnePlus 8 Pro are coming in hot and fast as of late. That is not surprising, if as one of the rumors suggests, a launch is less than three months away at this point. One of the freshest bits of unofficial information, however, is that the OnePlus 8 Pro could tout a display with a 120Hz refresh rate. OnePlus has not shied away from going with a gaming-grade refresh rate. Both the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T, for example, boast AMOLED screens with a 90Hz refresh rate, whereas the majority of smartphones are stuck at 60Hz. Up until somewhat recently, 90Hz was only found on gaming phones. As companies have pushed the envelope in the gaming smartphone... Read more...
Following up on the launch of the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro, we can now turn our attention to what comes next from OnePlus. That would be the OnePlus 8 family. More renders have come to light, and they show the OnePlus 8 Pro sporting a full-front display with a punch-hole design for the front camera. Looking back, the recently launched OnePlus 7T featured a teardrop notch for the front camera, similar in style to the Essential Phone. Prior to that, the OnePlus 7 Pro from earlier this year used a motorized pop-up camera to keep the front display nice and clean. A punch-hole cutout for the front camera is one that has worked for Samsung, and if the leaked press renders are accurate, that is... Read more...
