OnePlus 8 Pro Tipped To Boost Refresh Rate For Even Smoother Display

OnePlus Never Settle
Leaks, rumors, and renders pertaining to the OnePlus 8 Pro are coming in hot and fast as of late. That is not surprising, if as one of the rumors suggests, a launch is less than three months away at this point. One of the freshest bits of unofficial information, however, is that the OnePlus 8 Pro could tout a display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

OnePlus has not shied away from going with a gaming-grade refresh rate. Both the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T, for example, boast AMOLED screens with a 90Hz refresh rate, whereas the majority of smartphones are stuck at 60Hz. Up until somewhat recently, 90Hz was only found on gaming phones.

As companies have pushed the envelope in the gaming smartphone sector—ASUS's ROG Phone II features a 120Hz refresh rate, same as the first generation and second generation Razer Phone—we are starting to see more mainstream devices up the ante as well. And so here we are, talking about a 120Hz display on the OnePlus 8 Pro.
The rumor comes from Twitter user Max J. (@Samsung_News_). As his Twitter handle implies, he normally deals with Samsung news and rumors, and according to his profile, he is an editor and graphic designer for AllAboutSamsung.de, a German-language website that is....(*drum roll*)...all about Samsung news.

His latest tweet, however, is an image that says "120 Hz" with the caption "Be a 'pro'." The world "pro" is notably in quotation marks. When someone asked if he was referring to Samsung's Galaxy S11, he simply responded, "1+."

There's no other context for the rumor—it's not clear where he is getting his information from, or if this is even a supposed leak versus wishful thinking. However, a 120Hz display on the OnePlus 8 Pro is certainly with in the realm of possibility.

ASUS is the first to implement a 120Hz refresh rate on an OLED display, with the ROG Phone II, and OnePlus could follow suit with the OnePlus 8. The tech exists, and going that route would help differentiate the OnePlus 8 from the OnePlus 7T and other phones with a 90Hz refresh rate (like Google's Pixel 4).

It's all speculation right now, though. Rumor has it the OnePlus 8 Pro will be announced on January 23, 2020. In the meantime, leaked renders are making the rounds, in case you are curious what the phone might look like. If the renders are accurate, the OnePlus 8 Pro will feature a punch-hole design for the front camera, and a quad-camera arrangement on the rear.
