Who would have thought that Minecraft would be worth the effort to add ray-traced visuals to its blocky textures and comparatively simple graphics? But that's what happened, and the Minecraft with RTX beta turned out to be a wonderful example of how ray tracing can benefit a game, as we saw in our hands-on impression. Now a month later, gamers who have been pining for more are getting their wish. NVIDIA today announced the release of the Creator Worlds Pack #2. It features five new Creator Worlds with new gameplay, and of course those delightfully traced rays that make Minecraft with RTX pop. And according to NVIDIA, you can expect to see new uses of RTX's ray-traced effects, along with new physically-based... Read more...
In case you missed the news, the Minecraft with RTX beta is here, and with it comes a beautifully repainted world with path-traced rendering, physically-based materials, and NVIDIA DLSS 2.0 support to bolster performance. This is essentially Minecraft with ray tracing. To run it, you will need a relatively well-equipped PC. Specifically, the minimum requirements call for the following hardware... CPU: Intel Core i5 or equivalent, or better GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or better RAM: 8GB or more Storage: 2GB (game, plus all worlds and resource packs) Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit The GeForce RTX 2060 is the most affordable graphics card with dedicated hardware (RT cores) for real-time ray... It was seven months ago that NVIDIA announced it was working to give Minecraft a makeover, thanks to the ray tracing hardware acceleration hardware built into its GeForce RTX line of graphics cards. Well, unless you've been living under a rock -- or haven't been spending as much time on our news page as you should -- you know that Minecraft publisher Microsoft will make a beta of this new techology available to the public at 1 PM Eastern time today. We've been playing Minecraft RTX with its new graphics features the last few days, and now we can show you what it's all about.  While real-time ray tracing with DXR has been the headlining feature, NVIDIA and development studio Mojang... NVIDIA has been talking up Minecraft with RTX for nearly a year now, but we're getting very close to the first public beta for the game. As its name implies, this enhancement to Minecraft brings everything that you know and love about the popular game with the inclusion of GeForce RTX effects. According to NVIDIA, the Minecraft with RTX Windows 10 Edition Beta will go live on April 16th. With RTX enabled, Minecraft adds ray-traced reflections, global illumination, emissive lighting, volumetric fog effects and more, which brings a bit of added realism to the still blocky environments. The effects can be quite dramatic; especially with the reflections and atmospheric lighting. In addition,... Read more...
There’s no question that real-time ray tracing afforded by NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX graphics cards have led to an increase in realism for AAA games. Some of the titles that are RTX-enabled include Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (among many others).  One incredibly popular game that many folks don’t realize will [soon] be RTX-enabled is Minecraft. NVIDIA first brought us news of Minecraft with RTX back in August 2019, and is now giving us a fresh update on its status. The game worlds that you see below are fully path-traced, and chock full of global illumination, reflections, shadow effects and more to give the typically... Read more...
We've heard it more and more in the last several weeks; we're all in this together. While many people are working from home, there are a large number of students who are also trying to learn from home. Minecraft is a game that has been around for a long time, and it has announced free educational content in the Minecraft Marketplace. Microsoft and developer Minecraft developer Mojang say that educators around the world are doing all they can to provide digital lessons for approximately half a billion students are out of school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game company wanted to do its part to "help keep young minds sharp and stimulated." It's part is putting some free education content on... Read more...
I feel pretty good about myself when I accomplish mundane chores, like raking the leaves or organizing my inbox and whittling down my visible emails to just a handful. Then I see something like the latest timelapse that was put together by Elysium Fire, a Minecraft building team, and I get anxiety just thinking about how much work and coordination it must have taken to construct this fantastic world. It's a sprawling futuristic city "strongly inspired" by Cyberpunk 2077, a highly anticipated open-world role playing game by CD Projekt Red, which is due out next year. Specifically, the builders drew their inspiration from Night City. To be clear, however, it's not a carbon copy by any means, "just... Read more...
A few months ago, NVIDIA dropped a bombshell on us with the revelation that it's working with Microsoft on a real-time ray traced version of the widely popular game Minecraft. Leveraging the dedicated hardware included on Turing-based graphics cards like the GeForce RTX series, NVIDIA is promising some rather dramatic visual upgrades to the notoriously "basic" game with realistic shadows, reflections, and lighting effects. NVIDIA is now giving us performance targets for this upgraded version of Minecraft, which by itself isn't exactly a very demanding game. However, with a handful of ray tracing effects enabled, NVIDIA says that it is targeting performance of 60fps at 1080p with the... Read more...
Minecraft fans have a lot to look forward to starting next month. Early access for Minecraft Earth, the Minecraft AR game, launches in October. The devs recently gave up lots of details at Minecon Live about what gamers can expect in the coming months. But of course, the biggest thing from the event was the talk of Minecraft Earth incoming. Once early access is opened up, the devs say that they plan to have Minecraft Earth all over the globe by the end of 2019. Minecraft Earth uses augmented reality to allow gamers to build Minecraft constructions in the real world using their phones. The initial beta of Minecraft Earth started in late August in five cities. Fans can check this page for more... Read more...
When we think of Minecraft, we think of an addictive game that allows us to escape the rigors of everyday life to embark in a simplistic, virtualized world that is both fun and engaging. However, Facebook sees Minecraft as more than just mere child's play -- in fact, it's using the game as a training ground of sorts for its AI assistant. Team members from Facebook Research are using the 3D sandbox game because of its near limitless ability to create and rules that are "simple and predictable within certain limits" according to MIT Technology Review. This simplicity makes Minecraft a perfect fit for a generalist AI assistant. Facebook researcher Arthur Szlam and his team have crafted an AI... Read more...
One of the most popular games ever made is getting a big-time facelift. At Gamescom, NVIDIA announced it has been working with Mojang and Microsoft to bring real-time ray tracing to Minecraft, the world's best selling video game, transforming colorful, block-filled worlds into richer landscapes with realistic lighting effects. This is Minecraft as you have never seen it before, and perhaps never envisioned. Since Minecraft is not particularly demanding to begin with, NVIDIA has opted to refit the entire game with path tracing, a compute-intensive form of ray tracing. In other words, this is full-scene ray tracing and not a hybrid implementation. NVIDIA did the same thing with Quake II RTX, and... Read more...
The devs behind the incredibly popular game, Minecraft, have announced bad news about a long-anticipated update for the game. The Super Duper Graphics Pack that was promised years ago has been canceled. The first we heard of Super Duper was during E3 2017, and in November of 2017, the devs promised that Super Duper would land in 2018. That launch never happened, and now Minecraft devs are canceling the graphics pack altogether. The devs said that they realize the cancellation of the graphics package will be a disappointment to some fans, but it was shelved due to poor performance. Devs say they weren't happy with the way the Super Duper Graphics Pack performed across devices. Development on the... Read more...

To celebrate the birthday, the folks behind the game have done something that fans will enjoy, and bosses might hate. Minecraft Classic is launching running the original game directly in a browser. The developers say that Minecraft Classic is exactly as the game was in 2009 when it launched. That means all the original bugs, original interface, and only 32 blocks to enjoy. Most of those blocks are dyed wool, and the game is only available in creative mode. Even Minecraft was simplier a decade ago. The official birthday for the game is May 17. Players can bring up to nine friends into their world to play... Read more...

Microsoft may have seemed bonkers to shell out a staggering $2.5 billion to acquire Mojang, the developer behind Minecraft, around three and a half years ago, but on hindsight it's looking like a smart play. Minecraft continues to grow in popularity, hitting all-time highs in pretty much every important metric. For example, there have been 144 million copies of Minecraft sold across more than a dozen platforms, with 74 million active players every month. "We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we're at 74 million monthly active users — and that's really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it's through the game updates or bringing... Symantec has issued a warning that it found at least eight different apps on Google Play that were infected with a malware called Android.Sockbot. The apps all posed as add-ons for Minecraft: Pocket Edition and claimed to change the way characters look in the game with new skins. The infection from these apps was widespread with an install base between 600,000 and 2.6 million devices. The malware was mainly focused on infecting users in the U.S., but there were infections in Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, and Germany as well. Symantec says that it set up network analysis of the malware and found that it was aimed at generating illegal ad revenue. However, the apps had no functionality to display ads... Read more...
