It looks like users are having some fun with apparent engineering samples of Intel's upcoming 9th generation Core i7-9700K processor. We've spotted a handful of leaks already, the latest of which purportedly shows the 8-core chip being overclocked to 5.5GHz in current generation Z370 Express chipset motherboard. AMD has not yet launched its upcoming Ryzen 5 2500X and Ryzen 3 2300X, which will flesh out the company's second-generation Ryzen family. However, both chips have been spotted and detailed in numerous leaks and benchmarking runs. Earlier this month, AMD officially released its second-generation Ryzen processors, which are based on a refined 12nm Zen+ architecture. Professional overclocker der8auer has already shown us that the processors have some huge overclocking potential, and he attempted to further exploit this good fortune by delidding a Ryzen 5 2600. As is typically the case when der8auer puts processors on the operating table, he coaxed the processor's heat spreader up to a temperature of around 180 degrees, after which he was able to pop the lid off. AMD Ryzen CPU fans who aren’t in the market for the higher-end processors will be happy to hear that another set of benchmarks has leaked pointing to the overclocking prowess of the upcoming AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, which was accomplished using a high-end X370 mainboard. The user doing all the overclocking is a Discord user who goes by the name "Mow" and has provided CPU-Z and other images to prove his overclocking claims. The Ryzen 2600 was overclocked to maximum of 4.05 GHz and had DDR4 RAM running at 3,466 MHz. For whatever reason, NVIDIA does not want its hardware partners overclocking the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti at the factory. This is probably to prevent closing the performance gap between (and cannibalizing sales of) it and the GeForce GTX 1080, though interestingly enough, NVIDIA said it designed the 1070 Ti with overclocking in mind. The only caveat is you have to do it yourself, and Gigabyte is making it easy with its new AORUS GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card. Motherboard makers have an obvious vested interested in the overclocking scene where limits are pushed and records are broken. With that in mind, Gigabyte is in full chest-thumping mode after hosting an X299 OC gathering in which experienced overclockers used one of its X299 motherboards to push an Intel Core i7-7740K processor all the way to 7.5GHz and slightly beyond. As much as we like what AMD has been able to accomplish with Ryzen, there have been some growing pains associated with its newest CPU architecture, which is not unexpected when introducing a brand new platform. The good news is AMD is not ignoring the situation—AMD has been working its motherboard partners on firmware updates, the latest of which addresses compatibility issues with higher frequency DRAM that falls outside of the JEDEC specifications (anything faster than 2,667MHz). It was only last week when the Internet was abuzz with an overclocker taking an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor and revving it all the way to 5.2GHz on LN2 cooling. That paved the way for a new Cinebench R15 world record, though that record no longer stands. When someone who is experienced in their field issues a warning not to do something, it is a good idea to heed the warning. In this instance, renowned overclocker Der8auer posted a video explaining how to rip the integrated heat spreader (IHS) off an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor. The process is known as "delidding" and it is popular among extreme overclockers and enthusiasts because it allows them to remove and replace the stock thermal interface material (TIM) with a higher quality paste and use direct die cooling. Intel did something interesting when it launched its Kaby Lake-based series of 7th generation Core i processors recently. Tucked away in the product line-up, alongside quad-core speedsters like the Core i7-7700K, was a new, relatively low-priced Core i3 processor, which also happened to be unlocked for more flexible overclocking. Most previous-gen Core i3 processors were multiplier locked, which limited overclocking to only BCLK adjustments. Russian website OCLab got hold of an upcoming Intel Core i7-7700K chip and decided to take it for an overclocking spin. Intel is expected to launch Kaby Lake to the desktop in January. That's not far away at this point, though if you're curious about how well the processors will overclock, it's starting to feel like an agonizing wait. That's because early results show that Kaby Lake is going to be a fun architecture to play with.
