Credit MSI for recognizing that even diehard Windows users are prone to dancing on the dark side every once awhile, and the act of purchasing an iPhone or iPad device isn't necessarily PC heresy. With that in mind, it makes complete sense for MSI to release its free Afterburner overclocking utility for iOS devices. It's the same app as MSI's Android version, and with it you're able to remotely adjust and/or monitor MSI Afterburner settings on your Windows PC over a Wi-Fi connection. It's a neat way to monitor temps, voltages, and fan speed, and you can also overclock and even overvolt from your iOS device using the free app. To use it, you must have Afterburner 2.1.0 or above installed on your... The first time AMD's FX-8150 processor found itself in the Guinness World Records, it took a team of AMD sponsored overclockers (and a whole lot of liquid helium) working together to push the processor to 8429.38MHz. And this time? Andre Yang, working by himself, used the same model chip to break the record set in September and set a new one, which now stands at 8461.51MHz. Andre Yang accomplished the feat with a healthy dose of liquid nitrogen and an eye popping 1.992V. He used a base clockspeed of 272.95MHz with a 31x multiplier. He used the same model motherboard as the previous overclocking team, an Asus Crosshair V Formula. A lonely 2GB stick of Corsair memory sat in observance at 909.8MHz... Read more...
In the days of yore, overclocking was a complicated process that sometimes involved dip switches, lead pencils, pricey components, fairy dust, the right incantation, and a little bit of luck. It's considerably easier these days to push your processor well past its rated frequency, a point that's underscored by the tools Sapphire provides with its new Pure Platinum Z68 motherboard. As the name gives away, Sapphire's latest slice of silicon is built around Intel's Z68 chipset for second generation Sandy Bridge processors. It sports four DDR3 memory slots with support for up 16GB of DDR3-1600+ (and up 32GB "when suitable modules become available"), three PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots with CrossFire... Read more...
Every overclocker knows the number one enemy to their way of life is heat. High temps are the bane of every overclocking enthusiast, and unless you can keep your components cool, you won't have much luck pushing the pedal to the metal. It's true of every component, including videocards, which is why we're excited to see Powercolor promoting a non-reference Radeon HD 6590 graphics card decked out with a custom cooling solution. The "PCS+ HD6950 Vortex II Edition," as Powercolor calls it, comes clocked at 850MHz on the core and 1300MHz on the memory, resulting in 2.39 teraFLOPs of computing power. But it's the custom heatsink that gives this card an edge, according to Powercolor. By lifting the... Read more...
NASA tells us that "contrary to popular misconception, lightning often strikes the same place twice." This would certainly explain why MSI is launching not one, but TWO 'Lightning' videocards, the N580GTX Lightning and R6970 Lightning. These cards play for different teams obviously, the N580GTX representing Nvidia and the R6970 entrenched in AMD's camp. But both cards sport many of the same features, including MSI's Power4 architectures with all kinds of component upgrades, like a PWM module that's twice as large as previous Lightning cards. Memory has its own indepedendent power supply using an 8-pin connector to better help with overclocking, and MSI says its next-generation Proadizer capacitor... Read more...
Are the type that would overclock your toaster if it came with a utility that made it easy to do? If so, MSI's looking at you, along with everyone else who has an interest in no-fuss overclocking. MSI just released version 2.1.0 of its Afterburner overclocking software, and while it won't help you toast your bread in under 10 seconds, it does make easy work out of putting your videocard's pedal to the metal. "The new version of Afterburner not only supports the latest NVIDIA GeForce 500 and AMD Radeon HD 6000 series of graphics cards but also adds the Predator in-game video capture function. Gamers can now capture all of their most classic moments in their favorite games and share them online... Read more...
The MSI Master Overclocking Arena 2011 was held in Las Vegas last week, during CES. It's where nine teams go head to head to find out who the best overclockers are in North and South Amercia. Each team was made up of two participants that had to qualify for this event by first taking part in an online competition. The team that wins in Las Vegas will eventually go on to represent the Americas during the MOA World Finals in Taipei, Taiwan.  So what is competitive overclocking all about? Well, MSI Masters of Overclocking is an annual competition consisting of several qualifying competition held all over the world. In general, most overclocking contests are very similar. Contestants are provided... Read more...
Overclocked videocards are nothing new, but when you're the fastest on the block, you've earned the right to brag a little bit. And though HIS Digital isn't thumping its chest or making any "world's fastest" claims, the company's new 6870 TURBO graphics card is the fastest clocked HD 6870 we've spotted yet. The TURBO edition comes clocked to 920MHz from the factory, and if you know of a higher-clocked HD 6870, go ahead and link it in the comments section below. That's not a challenge, we'd really like to know, as would our readers. We poked around Newegg and couldn't find a single card that matches or exceeds 920MHz on the core. Rather than expend much energy ballyhooing the overclock, HIS seems... Read more...
Electroshock therapy is definitely not something most people want, but a little zap might help you with your SAT scores, according to a new study. The study, done by esearchers at Britain's Oxford University, showed that treatment with a low electric current could enhance math score, up to as much as six months. In the study, 15 student volunteers aged 20 and 21 were taught symbols that represented different numerical values. They were then timed to see how quickly and accurately they could complete a series of maths puzzles using on those symbols. The study took place over a six-day period. Volunteers were either given a placebo or a one milliamp electrical stimulus across the parietal lobe... Read more...
If you were concerned that Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture would ultimately be found wanting in the overclocking department, go ahead and put your mind at ease. Granted not all Sandy Bridge parts will have the moxie to kick it up several gears, but it's a good sign than an overclocker on Chinese-language Coolaler.com's forum managed to push an Intel Core i7 2600K to 5GHz...on air! Let's break this down. The major concern right now is that Intel's Sandy Bridge chips won't be much fun in the hands of overclockers. However, at the very least it would appear the unlocked K-series hold some promise. The 2600K boasts a 3.4GHz clockspeed at stock, and that 1600MHz boost to 5GHz is almost a 50 percent... Need a new machine? Not content with the stock options out there? As any real modder and hacker would advise, you should probably consider an overclocking rampage. But not without some help, of course. Maingear is a long-standing player in the custom PC business, and in order to gain a leg-up over the mass-market competition, they're announcing new Super Stock options that will boost the performance of everyday parts while still providing a warranty to end-users. The Super Stock options on the SHIFT "personal supercomputer" includes an overclocked processor, liquid cooling and custom paint options. Paired an overclocked CPU with a 3-way SLI graphics set ensures that you'll be getting serious... Read more...

We love the summer. This is normally the time of year where folks get out and enjoy the sun, take the family to the beach, or load up the car for a trip to the amusement park. But for a small group of elite overclocking enthusiasts, it's GO OC time.  The 3rd Annual Gigabyte Open Overclocking Championship was held this past weekend at the Pacific Palm Golf Resort in sunny southern California. It's where twelve of the biggest names of the extreme overclocking scene get together and battle it out, locked in the same room, provided identical hardware components, and given a time limit to produce the fastest benchmark results. Who needs to go outside and enjoy the weather?  We've got... Read more...
Asus hosted an overclocking competition this past weekend and invited us out to see XtremeSystems, OC Alliance, and Team PURE vie for top honors and performance world records on both LGA1366 and 1156. I've got experience working with single-stage phase changers, which use air-conditioner compressors to cool a CPU down to roughly -50C, but liquid nitrogen-fueled overclocking is an altogether different kettle of fish. It's also firmly in the "don't try this at home", although the price of LN2 most likely makes this a moot point. The Rampage III board here is being prepped for subzero overclocking. The substance being applied is kneaded eraser. I've used mastic tape for the same purpose, but kneaded... Read more...
Competition in the video card market can be pretty cutthroat, particularly when it comes to predicting the whims of the enthusiast market. Companies regularly vie for the title of Largest Pe... Fastest Video Card Available and they're willing to pull out all the stops to take home the crown. Case in point: Sapphire. The manufacturer's latest Radeon 5970 design was on display at CeBIT this year and packing enough firepower to perforate a burro at 20 paces. This new Radstrosity packs 4GB of RAM (2GB per GPU) and cranks up both the GPU and memory clocks. The GPU clock is boosted from 725MHz to 850MHz (a 17 percent increase) while the memory clock ticks up 20 percent from 1GHz to 1.2GHz. This inevitably... Read more...
MSI cards are no stranger to being at the top of the heap when it comes to breaking FPS records, and yet again the company is bragging about one of its own shattering the mold. The R5870-PM2D1G (not surprisingly based around AMD's Radeon HD 5870, a GPU that we adore) has just been used to create the new highest 3DMark Vantage P-Score of 24416, which is of course a high for a single GPU card. The award-winning user? Famed overclocked "Deanzo" from the great nation of New Zealand, who used MSI's own Afterburner OC'ing software to push the card to its stable limited. You might have guessed that LN2 was used to keep it cool, and you'd be right. The card was cooled to -180?, enabling the clock speed... Read more...

With a little knowledge, a sprinkle of liquid nitrogen and a few BIOS tweaks, the sky really is the limit when it comes to overclocking. If you don't believe us, maybe you'll believe MSI. The company has just announced that its P55 mainboard series (the P55-GD80) has helped to set a world record of over 5.3GHz. Specifically, the Xtreme Speed P55 was used by Coolaler in order to overclock an Intel Core i7 860 processor (2.8GHz in its stock performance), and the results were obviously impressive. All told, the CPU hit a whopping 5.39GHz, which is 92% past its set frequency. So, anyone up for giving this guy a challenge?World-renown mainboard and graphics card manufacturer, MSI, has attracted the... Read more...
