The year is 2020 and flip phones are back. Are these new smartphones practical for everyday users or are they a novelty piece? iFixit recently disassembled a new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and concluded that the device will be very difficult and costly to repair. The iFixt experts first noted that the Galaxy Z Flip’s specs are more impressive than its competitor, the Motorola Razr. The Flip features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ SoC, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal storage, and a 3300 mAh battery power in two cells. In comparison, the Razr includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, 6GB memory, 128GB of storage, and a 2,510 mAh battery. The Galaxy Z Flip is also a little over one hundred dollars cheaper... Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold did a belly flop prior to its initial release in 2019 due to its under-engineered display and hinge mechanism. Samsung delayed the official launch and went back to rework both the display and the hinge, and finally released the revised version in late September 2019.  While Samsung is currently grabbing headlines with its sleek Galaxy Z Flip, a true successor to the Galaxy Fold is reportedly in the works. It’s allegedly being developed under the codename “Champ” and will be called the Galaxy Fold 2. According to Mac Weinbach of XDA-Developers, the Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to ditch the awkward notch on the current folding... Read more...
Jerry Rig Everything (JRE) has long been taking smartphones and putting them through rigorous to see how durable they are. One of the most annoying things for many smartphone users is a screen that scratches easily. After Samsung touted how durable its thin and flexible glass was, being able to withstand 200,000 folds, JRE decided to put the device to the test for screen durability. However, the test didn't go so well. One thing noted before the durability test starts is that the flexible glass over the camera lens has a divot in it and that you can see a crease in the glass over the hinge area when the device is unfolded. JRE also promises to test the hinge for durability later, noting that... Read more...
The Motorola Razr launched earlier this month to much fanfare due to its folding [plastic] display and its design that gives a clear shout-out to Razr flip phones from year’s past. While we had previously been presented with a hastily-presented teardown of the Razr last week, the disassembly experts at iFixit have now given us a more thorough look at the $1,499 device. As you might expect, iFixit explains that the Razr represents “numerous feats of engineering” to allow the smartphone to fold completely flat, and it adds that is the “most complicated phone-based contraption” that it has ever encountered. Before slicing into the Razr, the teardown experts... Read more...
While Samsung let the cat out of the bag Sunday night during the Oscars, today is the “official” big reveal for its Galaxy Z Flip folding smartphone. The Galaxy Z Flip is Samsung’s next-generation folding smartphone, and takes on a completely new form-factor. The Galaxy Fold resembled a thick smartphone when closed (complete with a 4.6-inch cover display), it opened up to provide a small, tablet-like 7.3-inch display area. The Galaxy Z Flip is completely different, as it resembles a tall smartphone (22:9 aspect ratio) when open, and halves its size when closed to make it more pocketable. In practice, the Galaxy Z Flip is more akin to the recently launched Motorola... Read more...
The Oscars took place last night, and during the broadcast, Samsung ran an ad for its yet unannounced Galaxy Z Flip smartphone. Nowhere in the ad does Samsung mention the name of the smartphone, but it does note that the device will be unveiled at its Unpacked event on February 11, which is tomorrow. The Samsung commercial highlights the folding clamshell design of the smartphone. The commercial gives up no details on the smartphone and only shows it opening and closing. It does show an interesting shot of how calls can be answered or declined on the small display on the front of the smartphone. The commercial can be seen in the tweet embedded below. We’ve been hearing a lot about the Motorola Razr over the past few months, from its announcement, to its launch delays, to some early impressions on its durability. Those initial thoughts on durability were posted earlier this week, and some questioned whether the hinge would be able to stand up to the abuse of daily use. Those durability issues were directly addressed by CNET, which decided to test out the hinge on the Motorola Razr. Needless to say, the result were rather… interesting. The publication used its FoldBot to open and close the Razr repeatedly under controlled conditions to see if it could make it to 100,000 folds. Unfortunately, the display... Read more...
Samsung's latest folding screen smartphone, called the Galaxy Z Flip, is expected to launch soon for around $1,400. Custom luxury goods maker Caviar is producing a special version of the Galaxy Z Flip that has Joker and Harley Quinn images on the outside of the phone. The price is also much higher than the standard device is tipped to cost. Caviar has the preorder price for the Joker and Harley Quinn Z Flip listed at $5,210, and only 54 units will be made available. The Joker and Harley Quinn graphics are made in the design theme of a playing card. The case is covered in 999 gold using Double Electroplating technology and is then decorated with embossed engraving in the form of card suits. The... Read more...
Our first real look at Samsung’s coming Galaxy Z Flip has surfaced in the form of a leaked hands-on video posted to Twitter. The video shows the smartphone in someone's hand as it opened and closes. It looks very thick when folded in half and will certainly make for a significant bulge in a pocket. When folded, the hinge has the same thin gap as the rest of the body. When open, the smartphone appears to be the same thickness as other smartphones on the market today. The device in the video is a shiny pink/purple color, and on the front of it is a small display that shows the time and date. Although its name has been somewhat of a mystery until now -- we've heard Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Bloom, and now Galaxy Z Flip -- there's no question that we're now getting a good look at the smartphone that Samsung plans to launch early next month. Here's the Galaxy Z Flip in all its glory, and it shows a device with a flip-phone style form-factor akin to the new Motorola Razr. The images come from WinFuture, which has a pretty long track record when it comes to leaking Samsung smartphones. We can clearly see a punch hole cutout in the top center of the folding Infinity-O display for the 10MP selfie camera (f/2.0).   The display itself measures 6.7-inches diagonally (when... Read more...
