DJI is one of the top companies in the world of personal drones for shooting video and other content. DJI also has a history of having a tough time keeping its new products under wraps. The $799 Mavic Air leaked back in January and it was officially launched not long after that slip-up. Another DJI drone has leaked and this time it is said to be the upcoming Mavic 2. The Mavic 2 designation on the drone is clear in the leaked image. You can tell from the hands near the drone that while it might be larger than the Mavic Air it still appears to be compact enough to be easily transportable. The rumors circulating with the leaked photo indicate that the camera on the Mavic 2 is modular... Read more...

Google has been knee deep in the machine learning sector for a number of years, and the company isn't afraid to share some of its knowledge with the world for the greater good. The company has been particularly skillful in creating robust AI-powered image manipulation technologies, which is one of the reasons its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL boast really impressive photo capabilities. This week, the big G open sourced its DeepLab-v3+ "semantic image segmentation" model, implemented in TensorFlow. With it, AI can be used to separate people (or other objects) from the background, allowing users to create really stunning photos with minimal effort. Bokeh effects are all the rage (and for good reason),... Read more...
Mobile device makers have made a concerted effort to improve camera performance on each new generation of smartphone. While there is still a gap between a handset and a Digital SLR (DSLR), today's phones are capable of taking excellent photos. It's become a point of focus, and with the advances in imaging, like Bokeh effects, armchair photographers can snap some truly remarkable looking shots. Two recent flagships, Samsung's Galaxy S9+ and Google's Pixel 2 XL, both have been praised for their photo taking capabilities. Is one appreciably better than the other? The only way to find out is through a good old fashioned shoot-out. Before we get to the picture comparisons, let's cover some specs.... Read more...
Canon has unveiled its latest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera called the EOS M50. Canon is very clear in calling this camera an entry-level unit, and the camera maker wants smartphone users to think of this as their step up from primary shooter. The EOS M50 will most certainly offer better image quality than any smartphone camera out there. M50 has the distinction of being the first EOS M-series camera able to record 24fps video at 4K resolution. Canon also fits the M50 with a Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which is a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor that captures images with less noise and higher definition in low-light situations. "Our core goal when developing new entry-level interchangeable lens... Read more...
Details on the coming Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones from Samsung has been leaking frequently over the last few months as production ramps for the official launch. The latest leak has given up some details on the ISOCELL mobile imaging sensor that Samsung will be using inside the smartphones. The sensor is said to use a 3-stack design that will give the camera in the smartphone some nice features users will enjoy. A stacked design allows the sensor data to be exported from the image assembly at a higher rate. That faster transport will allow the ISOCELL sensor to record super-slow-motion images at up to 480 frames per second in full HD resolution. The stacked design would also allow,... Read more...

Google Street View is a great way to explore a new area and plan out vacations or a big move before you hit the road. You can check out images of entire neighborhoods along with places to shop and eat so you know where things are and what they look like when you get there. The catch is that in some areas Street View imagery is simply not available. Google is looking to fix that with the new Street View Ready program that will allow anyone to add images to Street View if they are using a certified camera. The catch is that there is only one supported camera right now and it is the Insta360 Pro. The big downside to this is that the camera sells for $3,499, definitely putting a crimp on your... Being a child of the '80s, literally everyone I knew had a Polaroid instant camera. They were a staple of every holiday and birthday party growing up and if you open the photo albums at the home of anyone around in the '80s up to the early '90s, you will find hoards of Polaroid pictures in there. Nostalgia is a big selling point for all sorts of devices; just look all the money Nintendo is raking in on its miniaturized retro consoles like the NES Classic Edition and the pre-order hype surrounding the SNES Classic Edition. If your nostalgia leans more towards photos that you can watch develop and have in physical format immediately, the new Polaroid OneStep 2 camera is just the ticket. The... Read more...

RED, a company known for super high-end Hollywood movie cameras, announced last month that it would be building a smartphone. The biggest claim to fame for the device, called the Hydrogen One, was the glasses-free holographic display. The smartphone would also be able to be used as a remote control for the RED camera systems. What bothered a lot of folks is that other than talking up that holographic display and the ability to control RED cameras, not much else was known. That RED Hydrogen One prototype smartphone has now turned up on a video by Marques Brownlee, who is among the first to see the device in person. The video also shows more images of the smartphone that were reportedly of prototype... Read more...

Sony may not be the first name that comes to most minds when considering a new camera purchase, but it's increasingly becoming silly to not weigh it as an option. Both the company's point-and-shoots and DSLRs offer excellent features for their respective pricing, both on the "lower-end" and also the high-end. At the high-end, the company's brand-new $4,499 USD a9 (or "α9") is a force to be reckoned with. At 24.2 megapixels (6000 x 4000), it's clear that Sony is not too worried about competing in the megapixel race - and that's a great thing. What's more important is that the camera includes a full-frame CMOS sensor nestled inside of a mirrorless design, and it has more bells and whistles than... Read more...

If you are interested in creating 360° VR content, then perk up your ears. GoPro’s Six Camera Omni will be available for sale on August 17th for $5,000 USD.  The Omni is a six-camera rig that relies upon pixel-level synchronization. The Omni cannot function unless all of the cameras are in the same mode and functioning SD cards are in place. The camera is made from aluminum in order to dissipate heat, withstand falls, and rig components can be easily replaced if necessary. The Omni can be powered through an external battery pack or from... Read more...
It goes without saying that Intel's RealSense technology is very impressive, as it's able to accurately scan its environment and pass along loads of data to a computer for analysis or image recreation. A popular scenario with RealSense has been with the flight of drones; with the technology, these little flyers can navigate their surroundings without crashing into obstacles - an important feature for companies like Airbus. The major reason we haven't seen RealSense deployed all over for various things is that it's simply expensive technology, at least right now. But for companies like Airbus, which produce aircraft valued in the hundreds of millions, an early-adopter's fee for RealSense is going... Read more...
